Under a Labour Government in the UK, the gap between rich and poor continues to increase and Britain is now more a more unequal society than ever since modern records began.

Government figures relaesed yesterday show deprivation and inequality in the UK rose for a third successive year in 2007-08. Since the last election in 2005 "the poorest 10% of households have seen weekly incomes fall by £9 a week to £147 once inflation is accounted for, while those in the richest 10% of homes have enjoyed a £45 a week increase to £1,033."

Other official figures illustrate a similar story, with "17,000 more children in England are on free school meals this year compared with last" and 11 million working adults below the official breadline. As the article comments, "income inequality at the end of Labour's 11th year in power was higher than at any time during Margaret Thatcher's premiership."

    • well its particularly bad since Tony Blair promised the government would decrease poverty in the UK by 2010 and Gordon Brown has also rallied to do the same.
Though its been the amount to spend and the ability to get rest of the party to look at poverty as well as health and education, which has been the problem. (or thats what the guardian podcast said :p)

    • U can not blame a government for all our problems, people are sheep and follow a every one else, people need to actully do something rather than just sit back in there hypocritical chair and point the finger shouting your not doing anything... well are you?
