Richard Fagerlund - SFC -- I have done many bedbug jobs, and I have never had a callback or had to make more than one trip, and I don't use pesticides. I consider pesticides to be more dangerous than the insects. Diatomaceous earth, soap, water, alcohol, silica gel and duct tape will help you solve bedbug problems if the materials are used correctly.
Diatomaceous earth applied properly to the interior of the box spring will eliminate one of their hiding areas. You can mix water (40 percent), alcohol (40 percent) and dish soap (20 percent) to spray any bedbugs you find. Be sure to check the seams of the mattress and around the buttons as well as under any labels. Silica gel is a good residual that should be placed where bedbugs hide. It will leave a white film where it is placed. Duct tape can be used to remove any egg clusters you find on the mattress or box spring. It is important that you know the biology and natural history of bedbugs when you attempt control so you don't apply these products or any others in the wrong areas.
I hope to post the entire procedure for controlling bedbugs without pesticides on my Web site soon. Meanwhile, contact me at askthe bugman.com if you want a company that can control bedbugs without using dangerous pesticides.
Richard Fagerlund is a pest management specialist who promotes nontoxic methods of pest control. For information or if you have a question about orange oil, go to askthebugman.com.
