Canadian scientist arrested for smuggling ebola virus into U.S.

A Canadian scientist was stopped at the U.S. border last week after authorities found 22 vials used in Ebola research from Canada's National Microbiology Lab in his possession, officials said Wednesday.

The incident has sparked controversy and serious questions about security protocols at the Winnipeg lab that contains some of the world's most deadliest pathogens.

Konan Michel Yao, 42, was apprehended by U.S. officials as he attempted to enter the United States at the Pembina, N.D., border crossing from Manitoba on May 5.

Yao faces U.S. criminal charges for smuggling and is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals service.

Dr. Frank Plummer, scientific director general of the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, said the vials did not contain any infectious pathogens.

Canada's public health agency did not know the vials were missing until it was contacted by the RCMP, which had been alerted by U.S. border service, Plummer said.

    • The story obviously is false.

      Who put it together?

      “THE CANADA.COM NETWORK
Canwest Global Communications Corp. is Canada's largest media company. In addition to owning the Global Television Network, Canwest is Canada's largest publisher of paid English language daily newspapers and owns, operates and/or holds substantial interests in conventional television, out-of-home advertising, specialty cable channels, web sites and radio stations and networks in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Indonesia, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States."

Now why might such a nice big company resort to using a deceptive headline?

      http://businessmanagement.suite101.com/article.cfm/canwest_communications_may_fi...

“Canwest Communications is facing a series of April deadlines to deal with its heavy debt. If it fails, the company could seek bankruptcy protection.

The entire industry is affected by declining advertising revenues. Canwest Communications is also affected by debt from the purchase of Hollinger International, and Alliance Atlantis which included specialty channels like: HGTV, and Mystery.

April is a month of deadlines for Canwest. The company has until April 7th to make a re-financing deal with senior lenders. By April 14th, it must make a $30.4 million interest payment or else creditors can demand repayment of $761 million. Experts say if creditors demand the money it would destroy the company, and it could result in a claim for bankruptcy protection. Fairfax Financial Holdings owns part of the company, and there’s a possibility they could come up with a plan to save Canwest."

CanWest is a very vocal supporter of Canada's Conservative Government, and already there is talk that the Conservatives will bail out their ideological amigo, should no one else be willing. Such good friends.

    • So there were no pathogens? Big Deal! The guy obviously was trying to scare people, and should be tossed into prison- at least for criminal stupidity. Regardless, the guy sounds like he needs some psychiatric help......

    • Ok so the word pathogen comes from pathos witch is latin for disease and genesis which is creation. Therefore, pathogen means "it can make you sick." In research, oftentimes, nonpathogenic versions of the virus are used for obvious health and safety reasons. These vials were nonpathogenic Ebola so it was the same species just an inactivated form.

Hope you're following. Anyway, This guy could be an idiot and wanted to score some from work for a friend who was doing a project on the side for example. Who knows yet. But I wouldn't jump to any averted pandemic conclusions just yet.

    • It sounds like the guy just took some things nobody would miss from his old job to use at his new job. Might as well have been a stapler or something...

Change the headline, it's completely wrong. The vials were used in Ebola research, they didn't actually have Ebola in them at the time.

    • Depending on whether Plummer's claim that the virus he brought in contained no infectious pathogens is accurate or inaccurate... it can entirely change the story.

    • So this guy was busted for "smuggling" glassware into the US. I would like to know why they used the word "smuggle". Were the vials diliberately hidden somewhere in his auto or were they sitting in the back seat in plain view.

If they were deliberately hidden, then I would say it was a good bust. However, if they were sitting in plain view then the guy is probably just a clueless moron.

    • This headline and story have been intentionally edited to be alarming. The actual story includes the words, "Dr. Frank Plummer, scientific director general of the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, said the vials did not contain any infectious pathogens. At no time was the health of citizens of Canada or the U.S. at risk, as the seized materials are known to be non-infectious," he said.

This is why the poster has used a link to the video instead of the text. The post should be corrected or deleted as misleading.

    • Scary. Very scary. And the fact that Canada's public health agency didn't even know the vials were missing is unacceptable. Wow.
