Biblical Quotes Said to Adorn Pentagon Reports

The daily briefings were called the “Worldwide Intelligence Update,” one of several intelligence reports compiled overnight and presented in a folder for Mr. Rumsfeld and other officials as they came to work.
In the selection of the cover sheets that GQ placed on its Web site, photographs of soldiers praying or in action on the sands of Iraq were overlaid with quotations like this one from Isaiah: “Their arrows are sharp, all their bows are strung; their horses’ hoofs seem like flint, their chariot wheels are like a whirlwind.”
Another, showing a tank at sunset, had this quotation from Ephesians: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
The accompanying article, written by Robert Draper, the author of a book about George W. Bush that was published in the last year of his presidency, suggested that Mr. Rumsfeld often delivered the briefings “by hand, to the White House.” But several former officials said Sunday that they doubted that Mr. Bush regularly saw the Pentagon briefing, which was considered both less complete and less sensitive than the president’s daily brief, the compilation of overnight and long-term intelligence assessments prepared for the president, and delivered every morning.

You think Rumsfeld went out on a limb?
Try this on for size!
I think most of us sensed that things going on behind the war decision were not on the up and up, but this latest news clinches it...
http://www.alternet.org/politics/140221/bush%27s_shocking_biblical_prophecy_emer...
"In 2003 while lobbying leaders to put together the Coalition of the Willing, President Bush spoke to France's President Jacques Chirac. Bush wove a story about how the Biblical creatures Gog and Magog were at work in the Middle East and how they must be defeated.
In Genesis and Ezekiel Gog and Magog are forces of the Apocalypse who are prophesied to come out of the north and destroy Israel unless stopped. The Book of Revelation took up the Old Testament prophesy:
"And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them."
Bush believed the time had now come for that battle, telling Chirac:
"This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people's enemies before a New Age begins""
Can you picture dour old Mr. Chirac hearing this claim and wondering how his guest ever got past the psychiatric evaluation to become President?

I haven't seen a genuinely motivated action. Maybe, I can't think of one.
Ya know, I'd have no problem with genuine people.
When you see these hair-sprayed hacks jabbering their line.
I don't understand why we put up with it.Everybody wants their god. Their savior.
-Hair-sprayed hacks. That's what I see these people believing in. And so ardently. So passionately.
Why can't they see?
When the dust clears, I can say that do not believe I have ever been taken in. I can add someone up, right now.Why do these people believe all these phony-baloney, low life posers?
I just don't get it - it's so obvious.

Why do these stories always devolve into mindless self-serving agenda-pushing rants?
Really, it's about quotes on a page. Talk about that, not the evil, crazy, zealots of the Christian right. This isn't about God or anything really having to do with a religious discussion.
One man, decided to put quotes of a book he felt appropriate on a cover page, repeat, cover page.
If he quoted from Dr. Martin Luther King, would he be cited has using a religious reference since he was a reverend, and often blended civil rights within speeches of religious beliefs.
Why does the book quoted matter if it means nothing more than a tangential association perhaps Mr. Rumsfeld made, himself being quite religious? How is the presence of his little sentiments on his personally prepared cover pages affect the policy or legislation or laws of this nation? How does the presence of "In God We Trust" on dollar bills affect how citizens spend their money? Does it suddenly, or even possibly, dissuade them from something that might be deemed ill by God, meaning ANY god from any religion? How then would the innocuous presence of a historical quote lead a team of intelligence people to use doctrine or religiosity in the further administration of their jobs in the government?
Remember, religion is a part of people. People work in the government. People are not asked to splinter their heritage and background as soon as they enter the work of the government in order to ignore the religious parts of them. Would the presence of a crucifix in his office be against the constitution? Would the presence of a Bible on his shelf be unconstitutional? All because those coming into his office might perceive their presence as some sort of pressure? It's so circumstantial and, in my opinion, ridiculous.

Yeah current 89, you're part of the problem, like that fucker Thomas Jefferson:
The phrase separation of church and state is generally traced to the letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to the Danbury Baptists, in which he referred to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution as creating a "wall of separation" between church and state.[3] The phrase was then quoted by the United States Supreme Court first in 1878,[4] and then in a series of cases starting in 1948.[5] This led to increased popular and political discussion of the concept.

current89,
you are part of the problem in this country -- you have no idea what the 1st Amenment says, do you. It says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Having biblical quotes on the document hardly consitutes a law.
Like most people, you are also probably not aware that the Constitution says nothing about separation of church and state -- that is the terminology used by liberal zealots trying to make this an atheist country.

Figures a story like this would throw all the pot smokin' hippies into a tizzy. So what? When was the last time a bible verse killed someone? These wackos won't rest until religious references are excised from American culture. Most of them would be passive about it but their college professors whip them into a frenzy using indoctrination. So much for the free exchange of ideas.

"When was the last time a bible verse killed someone?"
It hasn't happened and that's not the point! The point is that the United States isn't allowed to integrate religious undertones (or in this case blatant quotes from a biblical tome) into official statements, laws, or reports. We shouldn't even have 'In God We Trust' on our dollar bill.
Yes, the majority of the US is Christian. Yes that means most people believe in a higher power. But the point remains that our government shouldn't be endorsing any religious stance as it defies the separation of church and state that was implemented into our nation by the men who founded it.

It was the Wolfowitz plan for how to make a profitable war. He first designed it in the Reagan years. They allowed the 'business interests' to have at it by throwing out restrictions for the environment, they flushed good science down the toilet - actually stifling truth and creating lies to allow the Enrons of their ilk total freedom.
They threw this country's reputation, built by countless American lives, in the can - in the dirt - all to make money for their very small group of pals.
The people - of the United States voted Obama in. In the hope that we might have a better path open up.

‘Strategery’ – Strategy with a spin. Spin the facts, to the point the truth is no longer evident, then attack, attack, attack. It’s an “Assault on Reason”. It’s ‘strategery’!
The Bush administration, with the help of ‘strategery’ has spun religion to the point, Christianity now has new meaning. Ones faith should not be called into question, in the support of a war based on fixed facts, fake documents and torture.
A war of choice on a sovereign nation, which had not killed one American and was not openly threatening us, should not be spun into the will of God. God did not really authorize them to mislead us to war. That was a personal choice. Giving God credit for their actions, goes against the teachings of Christianity. They spin the Bible, thereby spinning God. They are making Christians dizzy. Accepting torture as policy is not Christianity, it’s tyranny. It’s ‘strategery’!

Slavery was known to be evil. People having substantial assets in slaves might have said different if they were asked, they may have worked to oppose anti-slavery movements - but they knew.
I have marveled at some of the prices. If someone owned slaves, they had a huge investment.
If you had a stable of thorough-breds, would you abuse them?
While there certainly were bad men doing bad things, and certainly there were ferocious beatings to hold control, I keep thinking that the money alone would tend to make the owners careful to maintain their stock.
I see an evil in the normal types of business decisions - which slave-owners were just one manifestation.
That nothing should concern, if money is to be made. It's a perversion. Also, if you up and inherited slaves, you'd have people's lives depending on the circumstance. If you were to free them, it would be your responsibility to ensure their situation.
But people finally ended it - and at great cost. No one should think lightly of it.

That is so manchurian candidate . The original one , with Frank in it . Only this time , Franks character was missing and there was massive death and torture . I feel a sense of responsibility , because , even though I have been very active in the political process , I have not spoken out against zealotry as much as I could have . I am wondering if less tolerance of religions that use fear and guilt to bully people into a childlike faith may be necessary to maintain a democratic republic . We were not meant to be a nation of followers .

Great article current89. I know the past administration is gone, but reading about stuff like this still gives me the chills.
The slideshow of these cover sheets in the link by neocongo is a definite must to see.

The usage of these quotes signals a blatant violation of the first amendment.

current89,
you are part of the problem in this country -- no have no idea what the 1st Amenment says, do you. It says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Having biblical quotes on the document hardly consitutes a law.
Like most people, you are also probably not aware that the Constitution says nothing about separation of church and state -- that is the terminology used by liberal zealots trying to make this an atheist country.

current89:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Separation of church and state is not actually in the Consitution, however it's co-author Thomas Jefferson explained that the first amendment was to be used as a wall of separation between church and state."
He's unavailable at the moment but those are his words.
Our founding fathers didn't want religion (ANY religion) to be a part of the government, whether in legislative form or otherwise because that would make us no better than the oppressive Brits we were striving to be free of. The pilgrims sought the New World because they didn't want the persecution they were facing in Europe. If our government flagrantly endorses religious statements blatantly taken from a religious text, then we really aren't getting anywhere.
