Red Bull banned in Germany after finding traces of Cocaine

BERLIN - Six German states have told retailers to stop selling Red Bull Cola energy drinks after a test found a trace amount of cocaine.
The bans started Friday after a sample test conducted by authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia state found 0.4 micrograms per liter in the drink. Authorities say the drug level was too low to pose a health risk.
Five other states also banned it from shops amid concerns over possible narcotics law violations.
Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment said Monday that the cocaine level was too low to pose a health risk. It planned to produce a more detailed report Wednesday.
Red Bull said its cola is "harmless and marketable in both the U.S. and Europe." It said similar coca leaf extracts are used worldwide as flavoring, and a test it commissioned itself found no cocaine traces.

complete over reaction in my opinion. the cola has coca leaves in it, but i thought that in order for coca to become cocaine it had to be refined and what not. i highly doubt the red bull company is buying coke to put in their product. they better not ban it here in the US!

Total overreaction in my opinion. Honestly, who doesn't sprinkle a little bit of crack or meth over their pancakes in the morning, to get that extra bit of flavor?
Also, since when does the grossest energy drink maker in the world, make, what's sure to be, the grossest energy cola in the world?

so it's in their for flavoring? I always had a suspicion that food and drink companies were putting in addictive agents... especially those Chinese restaurants you see in the malls where they give you free samples... every time I have one I really do want to buy! The question is do addictive agents become addictive in those .4mg doses? It is sort of small but if you look at drug doses it's really not that far off for intracellular effectiveness, just not effective enough for a 'high'.

Yup. I need to read a bit more closely. Micrograms. I haven't had occasion to weigh something that small since a physics class 20-odd years ago, but I assume you would still need a relatively sophisticated scale to even measure something that small? SO..disgruntled former employee trying to drive sales down -- or in-house publicity stunt to drive sales up...
I know what the reaction would have been among my teenaged friends back in the day...
