Obama's Supreme Court Nominee

VSiskos
President Obama nominated federal judge Sonia Sotomayor of New York for the Supreme Court. If selected, she will become the first Latina and the third woman on the nation's highest court.

    • As everything else he does!!! Where's the tarp funds? Government Motors? You people know that you can build a state of the art brand new company for a fraction of the money he had sunk and continues sinking into GM? Where's the accounting? Where are those "shovel-ready" projects? NK's nuclear threat - what is your fearless leader doing about it? He is being tested, but the arrogant fuck is gonna let it slide!
And what is wrong with "under God" in the pledge - even if you are not religious - it is heritage, tradition, etc! I am not uber religios, I am not Christian - and I have no problem with any religious connotations in our public square, on our currency, on the state seals, etc. This country was built on Christian (OK, judeo-christian) principles - let it fucking be! The atheist agenda is so nasty - you must learn to respect religion even if you choose not to believe! For when the society denounces its past, its heritage and tradition, it disintegrates - and Islam comes in!!! Look at Europe - another 20 - 40 years and the fanatics' dream of a world Caliphate is going to be real!!!
And I love it when the left-wing-nuts call themselves progressive!!! It would be funny, if it wasn't so stupid!!!

    • So what's this shit about she could render a better decision because she is a latino woman than a white male could. Anyone care to explain to me just exactly how that is not a racist statement? Can anyone tell me why the media has never reported this little fact we might want to know?

We are in the governments way. They want to control everything you do. Why do you want that? You might as well commit a crime and get a prison sentence to fully enjoy a controlled environment.

    • She was one of the judges that denied white firefighters the right to work based on reverse discrimination they feel should no longer apply. If they can hold the highest office in the country, we're equal now. I'm willing to do anything to once again find patriotism in this country. Fortunately both sides, like 95% of the world, are basically neutered so I doubt we'll have the uprising.

    • Who's the racist? She thinks a "latina woman would make a better conclusion than a white male"? Is she saying Brown v Board of Education and Roe v Wade were wrong? They were decided by white men.

I could see her saying " a different conclusion" but "better", that shows conceit and arrogance?

Could you imagine if a white male said that about any other race or gender?? Fair is fair.

Besides not all justices decide based on the president who appoints them, Souter voted liberal more than not, and Kennedy has swung both ways on decisions. Which is the way it should be, decide the law based on the Constitution.

And the other issue is 7 or 8 Justices are Catholic, and I believe 6 of the 9 were appointed by Republican presidents, yet cases dealing with choice is usually upheld

    • I fully support President Obama in his decision. This adds to the diversity of our higher levels of government. Many are already up in arms immediately, and I feel much of this resistance is due to either racist or pure partisan feelings. She is very qualified.

    • Judge Sonia Sotomayor has emerged as President Obama's robed sage, and the next Justice of the Supreme Court.

Republicans are afraid a Sotomayer appointment will move the Court to the left and provide a critical fifth vote for: Imposing a federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage; Stripping "under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance and completely secularizing the public square; And abolishing the death penalty.

All of which is music to this progressive's ears.

      Yes we can.

I normally do not disagree w/ you. But Sotomayer's record tends to suggest that she is fairly independent w/ moderate tendencies. I'm not sure she will be as progressive as you think. Though, I could easily be wrong (meaning just my interpretation of her record - what I had time to review).

I have to concur. she seems more likely to walk the moderate road than the liberal one. But seeing as Obama is a moderate it's only to be expected that he would try to balance the court in a moderate fashion too.
