Andrew J. Sluckis Jr., chief of police in Auburn, said his 39 officers would not be issuing $100 citations for possession of an ounce or less of marijuana, as required under the ballot initiative known as Question 2.
"If the Legislature enacts some changes, we'll be happy to do it in the future, but as it stands now we're not going to be issuing civil citations," he said. If an officer spots someone smoking marijuana, he said, "We will confiscate it and the person will be sent on their way." (to jail)
Who is supposed to be keeping an eye on the police departments? THE FBI!

Some to most cops will not be able to "just let them walk" You will get a disorderly conduct, different ticket, a different flavor of harassment, or they will just up the charges to sales since it's in a baggie, only the naieve and females can possibly believe they would actually let anyone "walk". (yes I said females because you always walk, the jail population proves this)

I am trying to clarify the question, I emailed the committee for sensible marijuana policy to see if they could clarify what is going on over there in MA.

I see what you are saying folks, but this "law" they are refusing to enforce, is the law that "decriminalizes" marijuana. They will of course continue to uphold the old law as they always have. Just go up to any MA cop and hit your doobie and find out. If you believe anything a cop says, you have never watched "cops". I can't believe they are saying it's perfectly fine to give false information to a cop. I know for damn certain, that like a dog chasing a cat they can not resist arresting somebody they "want" to. And when you have followed these "pigs" and their opposition to the "question 2" law, you would not doubt that these "pigs" do not intend to "let go" anyone. I think it's pretty sheepy to believe they are gonna let you walk. I wouldn't believe them if I called on the phone and asked.

'pigs'? I don't think the police are pigs. I don't agree with the war on cannabis, or the practices of some police, but I wouldn't label them all as pigs. That type of terminology should not be part of legalization discussion. If they decriminalize cannabis, it won't be a free pass to disrespect police.
Those who think they should challenge police, by smoking in their presence would be asking for trouble. It wouldn't be the fault of the police, it would be the irresponsible cannabis smoker. We shouldn't all be labeled with the irresponsible actions of the few. They are probably the individuals, people are talking about when the use the term 'pothead'.

Conniepae, how can you not just throw up all over yourself? I mean I am nauseated by just hearing you say that a cop can do whatever he wants and it's not his responsibility. How much flouride did you have to drink before you came to this genius conclusion? So what if someone was so "stupid" to drink coffee in front of a cop? Is that ok when the cop arrests you for that too? Do you just support pigs no matter what?? And yes you can call them all pigs, they have sworn to uphold all laws. (all of them) and some of those laws are bad. So yes they are all bad by default. I could go on to some real generalizations which are mostly true such as that bullies and people with antisocial personality disorder gravitate towards law enforcement. There's another neurosis that has been identified that is shared by 'cop' types, where they have to have everything either or, nothing in between. They have to have everything labeled and categorized with a little yellow tag. Unresolved or gray areas drive these types nuts. Forgot what it's called, mostly men get it.

I think police should be used for real crimes, not made up crimes. When people like Ronald Reagan are allowed to lie, then force the police force to enforce a lie, that's the fault of Ronald Reagan, not the police.
"I now have absolute proof that smoking even one marijuana cigarette is equal in brain damage to being on Bikini Island during an H-bomb blast" - Ronald Reagan
Granted many police watch too much Rambo, but it takes a certain mentality to be willing to go into crime ridden areas to enforce the law.
If someone steals my car, or breaks into my home, I call 911. Who do you think answers the call? The police. I don't defend all the actions of all the police, but group labeling of police as pigs, is no better than group labeling every cannabis smoker as stoned potheads.
I do think the unjust war on drugs has added to the disrespect of our laws. The war on cannabis in an unjust war based on distortion and many times out and out lies. How can one be expected to respect a law, which one knows is not based on fact?

Conniepae, I agree with you mostly except:
"group labeling of police as pigs, is no better than group labeling every cannabis smoker as stoned potheads"fails to recognize that pot smokers never "signed on the dotted line" always to uphold all law, just or unjust, nor are they "always" stoned. So I see a clear difference.

Guess it falls to me to point out the article has nothing to do with reading skills. Although I do appreciate the humor.
I also actually have a comment in response to this:
John M. Collins, general counsel for the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, said he had been fielding calls from dozens of members across the state who believe the law is so flawed that it is "going to become a joke."
News flash: Cannabis prohibition is already a joke and has been; although it's bad one.

There's absolutely no mention of officers arresting anyone. The one guys actually says they'll take the weed and that'll be that. No citation, no fee, no nothing.
I think Funnicus and Slarabee, you guys need to re-read the article without you're "They're out to get us" glasses on.

Read the actual article not the one the poster put in.
The police said they would not ticket people and let them on their way. Nowhere on the original article did it say they would go to jail. - 2 years ago

I say kudos to the officers! He didn't say they would arrest people for possessing, or smoking cannabis. That sounds like a step in the right direction. The police have more important crimes than someone smoking cannabis.

It's been a busy day, I didn't have time to read the post two, or three times. That's one pet peeve I have with current not wanting people to include the article in their post. Many don't have time every day to read every article.
Thanks for your helpful criticism anyway. I love when people are so righteous. Reading comprehension? Get over yourself. Your post is no more informative than any other post, some days I have time to read them all and some days I don't. I stand corrected!

He meant "on their way to jail" you can determine this especially when you evaluate their arguments of why they won't "just" cite them... They say there is no 'checkbox' on their ticket book that says marijuana. Then they go on to say they "Have" to arrest them to find out who they are.
I thought the same thing at first glance. You have to read it close. They are rogue.

If he meant being sent to jail that is ridiculous, but the article does not say sent to jail. You cannot put words in his mouth just because you assume most cops are crooked. It sounds to me like he meant it will be confiscated, and the offender will just be "sent on their way" as in let off the hook. I agree with JackHerer on this one.

Why are they confiscating it? (joke) what numbskulls. Citizens no longer want law enforcement to waste tax dollars doing this shit. Cities and County governments make cashola on this. They are money grubbing pigs. Up and down the line someone making bank on this waste of our tax dollars. Find out who they are and vote them the hell out! Last time I checked, the Chief of police is an elected official. Bye bye..
