A prolific American collector of Japanese manga comics has been convicted under the 2003 Protect act of pedophilia for ordering comics which were intercepted by customs.According to wired's threat level blog, the collector, Christopher Handley, was prosecuted for mailing obscene matter, and possession of obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children. Three other counts (not listed) were dropped in the plea deal.
Christopher Handley, described by his lawyer as a “prolific collector” of manga, pleaded guilty last week to mailing obscene matter, and to “possession of obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children.” Three other counts were dropped in a plea deal with prosecutors.
Comics fans are alarmed by the case, saying that jailing someone over manga does nothing to protect children from sexual abuse.
“This art that this man possessed as part of a larger collection of manga … is now the basis for [a sentence] designed to protect children from abuse,” says Charles Brownstein, executive director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. “The drawings are not obscene and are not tantamount to pornography. They are lines on paper.”
Sentencing may extend to 15 years in prison.

What do you think? Does this guy deserve prison for collecting comic books, some of which had drawings of children engaged in sexual acts?.

Yet the guy who actually raped his six-year-old stepdaughter only gets 10 years behind bars- excellent logic.

Alex Jones was right about things like this!
He said eventually there will be thought crime, where you will be arrested for thinking of committing a crime or just simply a artist draws naked children, in a way the United States has now implemented thought crime, where you can be arrested for your thoughts for the security instead of liberty, you can be arrested for any impure thoughts instead of real commited crimes.
Welcome to the land of the thought crime!

Hey corndog67-
So realize these things...1-The item in question was created in another country and then shipped to America.2-The item was ordered and not previewed by the person that purchased it, who may not have known there were graphic images of children depicted in the book. 3-He was arrested without ever having possession of this so-called "child pornography".
Now, IMO, while he may have had knowledge of the book's content, and he may have willingly ordered it, does this mean he committed a crime? He should not have plead guilty based on his lawyer's advice.
And another note- there is a show on the BBC called "SKINS" in which teenage drug use, sex, and nudity are frequently shown. This airs on BBC America, during prime time.Watching this a crime? Did the producers of this show commit a crime?
And by the way- you said "No wonder the world is turning to shit, look at how many people are defending this freak." No one is defending anyone or anything except the right to free speech.
And as for your statement "Avid comic book collector. I bet he gets a lot of pussy"-dude, what makes you think comic readers don't get a "lot of pussy", as you so eloquently put it? I'll tell you what-I am positive that a lot of women would be more offended by you referring to the dating process and having sexual relations as "getting a lot of pussy" than they would be by some guy ordering a book with dirty drawings in it. Just saying...maybe you should ask your girlfriend/wife about her opinion on the matter.

Hey, Adveritas, do you think it's worth 5 years in the joint to exercise your right to order pedophilia? I don't care if it is a comic book or not. Anything to do with molesting kids is really fucked up, and to make a buck or two off of it isn't right either. No matter what, real life, comic book, fucking describing in a forum somewhere, if that is your thing, something is not right.

@corndog67 the question wasn't whether or not you agreed with his life styles or hobbies, it was whether or not he truly committed a crime or not. I'm sure everyone here would agree with me that you're an ignoramus and we would gladly accuse you of committing idiot crimes or use of offensive language; but you walk free because you're allowed to express your thoughts and live the way you want as long as you don't harm anyone.

Avid comic book collector. I bet he gets a lot of pussy. I bet all the pages of his Manga were stuck together. The only kind of guy that would buy this bullshit is a fucking jackoff, lonely freak.
Any thing to do with pedophilia should lead to execution, including comic books. Get a fucking life. No wonder the world is turning to shit, look at how many people are defending this freak.

There exists the freedom of expression-this extends to EVERYONE. The last time I checked, merely thinking about something, painting or drawing something, SINGING about something (because rap lyrics about murder, rape and drugs are socially acceptable and proven money makers?) or even just imagining something is still legal. There is no crime committed until someone acts on their thoughts-although our "FREE COUNTRY" seems to be getting LESS free all the time.
I believe that our bureaucratic leaders are once again attacking the "SOFT TARGETS", and once again they will claim to have "KEPT CHILDREN SAFE" while actually doing NOTHING to actually protect kids. I am pretty sure that Thailand is still a pedo-haven, why aren't we policing that country to protect their children?
Whoever created this stupid comic has the right to express him/herself, and people have the right to read whatever the hell they want. Or at least those rights should exist.Whether you like what was created or not.
Oh and btw-the comics were "intercepted by customs"-did this collector even know what he was ordering? He NEVER HAD POSSESSION OF THE COMIC!!!

"possession of obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children."
I'm not crazy about censorship but I do believe we have to draw a line somewhere just out of simple decency. People's brains are capable of dreaming up some disgusting stuff. That doesn't mean we should mainstream it and make it OK.
I have a problem with calling it "art" if the artist drew little kids having sex. I'm sure people who prey on little kids would like to see these books.

This is complete bullshit. And it didn't start with manga. It started in 2003 when, as always, nobody read the frakking bill. "It protects children! It can't be bad!" Well frak you and frak your children. I bet it's as unconstitutional as the rest of stuff they keep passing. What's next? Thought police?

as an Japanese animation lover this is hard- while of course i don't condone or prefer this in comics and animation- it seems to happen in Japanese based comics and animation...a lot. i think it boils down to culture and if your not educated about there culture it could shock and offend and gross the hell out of one. these are animations though and not actual depictions of these horrible acts- if this man had no "real" pictures of children - i don't feel its a crime its gross but not reality- while if he had stockpiles of these comics i don't like it- its gross- but its not real once again. tough subject as an animation lover and especially one who like Japanese animation.

I agree with you, I have a point when saying that theres different cultures, with different viewpoints.
In different countries sexual and mental acts are different and vary from country to country.
In different countries what somebody considers taboo is not in another country.
Thats why the NWO is a bad idea because this may lead to many people being arrested and called pedos.
The NWO means the wipeout of many cultures. Another example is in one country the n word did not mean anything against blacks while in America that word is disrespectful to blacks.
Different cultures have different problems, different societies.
Another example is the ad with a black psp and a white psp became a racial issue, GOD help us all!
Since when did embracing other cultures became taboo!

Instead of arresting a guy over child nudity in animes, why not take action against the people responsible for the misconduct in gitmo. CHILDREN WERE HURT IN GITMO U IDIOTS!
Instead of arresting this anime guy, arrest the real people that hurt children, it is pointless arresting anime people because of content anime contains.
Arrest the perverts that are dangerous to society, not a bunch anime geeks, anime freaks, or anime people in general.
This is silly!

I can't believe that, this is stupid. I admit there can be some child nudity in animes (I Know because I have watched possibly hundreds of english dubbed Animes, and 1 english subtitled animes throughout the years, and I have no control over whats in them, it's ridiculous giving years in prison over this anime, thats just as bad as the sexting incident) because they don't get perverted thoughts over children as much as the pedo..pedo American culture where nudity equals sex, how can we embrace all cultures when simple nudity of younger people or even nudity in general is condiered pedophilia. This case outta be called Persecution because of the very few stupid perverted people, they have to ruin people that don't have these thoughts. Nudity, hot springs, anime, and other stuff is apart is Japanese and asian culture, if Americans cannot accept that and call anime child abuse because of their different views then I demand America should be called a selfish nation where there is NO diversity. I thought America was about exploring all cultures throughout the world and accept that others have different non hurtful viewpoints
I bet people will start going to prison over Elfin Lied because that surly has child and adult nudity in it, even depicts violence and gore against children and adults, and so I guess anime people who watch that show will also be convicted under supporting virtual child abuse and child porn.
How come animes even have some child nudity, because in different cultures nudity is not a problem, it's not perverted like in America the inventer or porn, in fact I think America invented child porn and exploitation, Americas good at greed, good at selfish and good at pervertism, look at certain Amazon tribes, they don't go around calling people the p word everytime theres nudity.
Why can't we embrace other cultures instead of taring them down because of a few stupid people that rape children, thats like arresting Michael Moore and Alex Jones because of the very few terrorists that try to assisinate politicians.
Theres alwatys gonna be perverts, even in Japan, perverts will always exist whether we condemn nudity or not. Different cultures aren't a crime and if these child protection laws get abused like this to go after anime artists and virtual cybering I won't be surprised that filesharers get shot to death by our police. It's like ever since dateline and 9/11 we are all fearful over these few creepos, we sit there and allow rape, torture and abuse of detainees including children, while we arrest people over anime cartoons.
I thought America was suppose to be the land of all cultures and the land of the free, guess I was mistaken

Unless they are representations of real children and this was some sick way of getting around photographing them by rendering them in pencil and ink instead, this seems awfully close to censorship. On the other hand, without actually seeing the evidence (and I don't envy the judge having to do so) I hate to sit in judgement of either side.
I know from long experience that it is almost impossible to summarize a case without leaving something out or embellishing even just a tiny bit either because of some kind of internal bias of the person describing it or just to make the "story" a little more interesting (or even salacious).
