Witness says trooper MAY need anger management

Paden - A witness has come forward to share her view of a struggle between a state trooper and a critical care paramedic.

The video of the confrontation is generating tremendous public interest. NewsChannel 8 spoke with Diane Walkup, a woman who saw the whole thing unfold in front of her.

Walkup sat there, stuck in traffic, watching an unbelievable sight unfold right before her eyes.
"I was horrified," she says. "I couldn't believe it."

Diane had just visited the Paden Cemetery when she drove up on what has now become an infamous scene played out on not only local, but national television.

"He said 'we've got a lady in here we need to transport to the hospital'," Walkup says. "The officer said 'I'm going to arrest you for obstruction of justice'."

Caught in the crossfire of the exchange was the family of the woman in the ambulance.

"The husband of the woman was in the ambulance pleading 'sir, please, please let them take my wife to the hospital'," Walkup says. "The sister was begging and the officer was paying no attention to them. The patrolman paid no attention to the family at all."

Diane says the EMTs were just trying to do their jobs and says the trooper was angry.

"You could tell he was very angry," she says.

So much so, she thinks he may need some anger management.

"He treated the family horribly," Walkup says. "I think he treated the EMTs bad. It just really soured me."

Diane says she has always has the utmost respect for the highway patrol. But now?

"It kinda makes me scared that if one of them ever tries to stop me, I may do something that might make them mad."

The highway patrol tells NewsChannel 8 the incident remains under administrative review. But, the trooper in question is still on regular duty.

    • Guys, I try to be an objective observer. I try not to judge. In that respect I can't help but to join the main opinion here; this was wrong. REALLY wrong.

Having said that I'll now say this. If you're going to be objective then you have to consider the entire situation. This behavior is only a part of it. To protect and preserve is pounded into our law enforcement officers. That's why they're there. They raise their hand and swear an oath to do that. They don't take it lightly. But there are those that can mouth the words, but not feel them. You don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

This guy took it too far. Truthfully, I can't understand why this EMS vehicle was pulled over to begin with. They weren't running away from anybody. Speeding is standard. Common sense would dictate if EMS did something wrong then when they arrived at the hospital would be the time & place to take issue with the drivers. They have a person in the back and her life matters. If that girl had died the shit would have hit the fan. And rightfully so. I'd lead the cheerleaders.

Also understand please that our law enforcement officers are forever pulled in two different directions. On the one hand when they respond to a situation their duty demands that they IMMEDIATELY take control. They can't relinquish this. Can't. Chaos results. They're the LAW. No choice. No matter the situation they have to be in charge. The right & wrong is secondary to this. They control the situation first, then they deal with it. It can be no other way. You can't fault them for this. There's no choice. They're representatives of our society. You wouldn't want them to be otherwise. truth. Who do you call when somebody is breaking into your house?

This situation, and others, results from what they do afterwards. If I were to place blame for this, I'd place it with the officer that watched this happen and did nothing. To my lights, his job would mandate that he put a hand on the offending officer and say they need to have a few words. The EMS guy wasn't going anywhere. He needed to walk this guy out of hearing amd point out that's not the way things are done. The threat doesn't matter; the hand on the throat does.

When the EMS guy threw the officer off, the other officers present couldn't permit that. Right or wrong doesn't come into play. In that situation you're talking control, and they can't relinquish that. Considering we're talking an EMS vehicle I think that's seriously dumb. But I understand the reasons for it, disagree though I may.

What happened after is wrong no matter how you cut it. I couldn't be a cop, It's just not in me. Those guys & girls could be writing you a speeding ticket one minute, and being shot at the next. Who in hell needs that? And how do you remain unemotional? Sucker shoots at me I'm going to shoot back. A chickie telling me some appointment is the reason she's doing 110 on the freeway wouldn't impress me for shit. The people she's endangering have squat to do with her appointment.

Can you dig it? This guy was wrong. He needs to be called on the carpet. Classes for attitude adjustment, fire his ass, I don't know. This wasn't right. But don't get down on cops in general. The vast majority do as good as they can. It's a damn hard job.

I want to agree with you cabinettags, I really do, but just this week I watched a video of a cop beating a 15-year-old girl for tossing her shoe off in his direction, another cop shooting a man who was on the ground and complying, and this moron who has his hand around the EMT driver's throat. Too much. And the thing is, the police are NOT policing themselves.

Yes, their job is hard, and I probably couldn't do it either, but the cops who are going to behave this way are not unidentified amongst their peers. Other cops know who they are. It's in their body language long before they step over that line. Their fellow officers know who they are, their supervisors know who they are. They are tolerated until they do something that can't be undone, and this is where intervention needs to begin, on the police force, but they aren't doing it, for whatever reason. I suspect it is simply because no one is holding them measurably accountable for their behavior.

They may believe they have good reason not to intervene, and until the public makes it known to their representatives that police brutality will no longer be tolerated, we aren't going to see an improvement. It continues because we allow it to continue, and we all have a responsibility to make it stop.

E-mail your representatives...let them know how you feel about this issue, before it's you or someone you love being beat up or gunned down.

    • glad I don't live in OK, but I'll bet these bad cops are EVERYWHERE.As long as they have a badge and a gun they can enforce their attitude on us. All Americans need to arm themselves, either with a conceal carry permit and a gun or with a cell phone to record these animals

    • Definitely some issues going on there. He probably shouldn't be a cop. I thought they had psych tests to screen these bubba's out before they hit the streets.

      but they wouldn't do that...
EMTs are just not put together the same way this kind of cop is. It's an old story, happens all the time, and we saw a vivid and expansive example of this cop's behavior in our past president and his administration. It didn't change until people stood together and said, --that's enough.

We have to stand together against police brutality and say, Enough. It stops here.

I think it depends on what you are doing and where you are. I've been pulled over by highway pigs and highway police. Yes there is a difference.

Highway pigs are obnoxious assholes who treat everyone like a strong suspect for a felony and they will do so no matter how respectful you are to them.

Highway police are doing a job, and as a result they are polite helpful and they still might give you a ticket but as long as you treat them with respect they will treat you with respect.

    • Some cops are decent . Some are bullies , and the decent ones hate 'em . Couldn't they screen them at the academy for emotional intelligence ?
