Speaking at the National Press Club for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation journalism awards, Cheney was asked about recent rulings and legislative action in Iowa and elsewhere that allowed for gay couples to legally wed.
"I think that freedom means freedom for everyone," replied the former V.P. "As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and...

uh... he "supports" it because he has no choice after the state has passed judgment on the issue. it is up to every state to determine through their own legislative process whether to support it or not. does the VP's comment deem true support of the issue? not sure about that.

The opposition stand to Dick Cheney's support of gay marriage has been very well presented in CatchAlexandra's Current post that explains what a traditional, Bible-based, religious marriage should be.

Dick lovers are really Dick haters? Hahaha... What fun it is to watch the leftie and the homo's rally around the one person who personifies Satan for them!!! Fact is - he shits on you and your hate - and is more patriotic and intellectually superior to your entire lot. Flag this - I know you will, 'cause you can't handle the truth!!!
What about your muslim messiah-president's take on gay marriage? He won't let you have it either - and you voted for him! Hahaha - how ironic - more so than Dick having a Lesbian daughter!!!
I saw his interview - and he said what the runner-up Miss America said - that states should have the right to choose - and that it shouldn't be dick-tated by the fed! Marrige is a state institution, not federal. You all are a bunch of Parez's - aren't you?

Dick Cheney? Who? Did he say he was coming out of the closet? Hiding behind that Nazi like facade all those years may explain a lot. Let us hope our gay brothers and sisters will welcome him with open arms. Am I confused again? Dancing snakes in my head. Who let those bats in here?
Who the F____ cares what the A____H_____ thinks? Stick him in a bottle and put him to drift in the Japanese current.

Apparently he loves his daughter. Why condemn for him for this? We all shoulder our own burdens in life. He has bravely taken on this burden, that is totally at odds with his political position. Kudo's to him and his courage and boo's to his detractor's. His critics should gain some maturity, raise and support a child, invest your total emotional energy into that child...then you will have earned the right to understand what it means to be a parent! A bunch of punks attacking a loving Father, is no more than a fog of fleas on the windshield of life. Grow up and try raising your own children! Then defend them when they chose another path! That is the true measure of a Man.

people are not attacking Cheney for loving his daughter, they are attacking him for his defense of torture, lies about Iraq, and the trail of money made from that war that would lead back to his door if we had a media that was willing to trace that path.
Good, he loves his daughter, and the Russians love their children too, as do the Chinese, the Iranians, the Iraqis....not sure he gets that.

Cheney has always been mysteriously silent on this issue. Even Bush supported the state-by-state legalization policy, until he needed to get re-elected. He didn't come out in support of the Defense of Marriage Act until he could use it to politically rally the Conservative bases and confuse the older, more socially conservative Democrats, especially in Florida and Ohio ;)
But this position is not new at all, though Cheney's willingness to speak about it is, due to his apparent discontent with being out of the White House.

When one reads the whole article through, it clearly states that this not a new position for Dick Cheney to take. Both his wife and he have said the same things before on several occasions. The whole Cheney family has been consistent in their stance on gay marriage. This is nothing new.
From "The Huffington Post:"
"Cheney has made similar arguments in support of gay marriage in the past, including during the run-up to the 2004 election. But his current comments come at a moment when the Republican Party and conservative movement is increasingly split on the issue. Bush recount lawyer Ted Olsen and John McCain campaign manager Steve Schmidt have both argued in favor of gay marriage. The religious right, as expected, remains opposed."

In the State of California in all her glory, put the issue on the ballot for the people to decide. Everyone in State of California was allowed to vote. In essence everyone, not just a few elitist, was able to make there input known. The State of California opened her doors to democracy and alouded the people to decided. The people have spoken!
Then, the bigots and the narrow-minded, the intolerant and the federalist, whose internal rage for tyranny cannot be quenched, wanted only a few to decide the fate of what the many had already chosen. They went to the State Supreme court. Her purity remained intact and democracy prevailed.
For those of you who do not understand democracy, it is important that you read the community rules to learn how it works.

I consider Dick to be a federalist. His position is not surprising to us. However, I’m excited that he has respected the State of California’s sovereignty and is respecting the California State Supreme Court decision.
Intolerance, immaturity, and narrow mindedness have no place in a democracy
It’s sad that bigots cannot accept a democratic outcome.

Power should never be used to separate a group of people from the core--hell, it should rarely be used to separate an individual from the core.
The gay movement is not about equality for gays, it's about making America a better place. In that regard, it's no different than the women's suffrage movement, the civil rights movement, or even the Chicano movement, all of which have their legacy to be continued today--in order to make America just plain better.
