The Guardian newspaper, one of the staunchest liberal papers in the world, has published an editorial the day before the European elections, demanding Gordon Brown be removed as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour party.
The paper claims that things are so bad, the only way for Labour to not suffer a defeat greater than the 1979 election that saw Thatcher brought to power and 18 years of Conservative rule, is for Brown to be shown the door immediately. They also claim that there are a number of people in the cabinet who would be interested in becoming leader.
This news comes in a week in which most senior members of the government are surrounded my rumours that they are stepping down. Normally it is considered convention for this to happen after an election but already the home secretary Jackie Smith has gone and now Hazel Blears, a figure many people believe would be interested in the PM job. There are also questions now over the role of Alistair Darling the Chancellor.
A cabinet reshuffle looks likely and is usually an opportunity for a Prime Minister to stamp their authority on the government but Brown appears to have lost so much credibility that his ministers are resigning and reversing this on him - turning their departure into further humiliation.
That so many members of the government are looking to resign on the eve of a local government and european parliament election is nothing short of a disaster for Gordon Brown.
