Poll: Half say torture is sometimes justified -

Just over half of Americans say torture is at least sometimes justified to thwart terrorist attacks and are evenly divided over whether to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, according to a poll that underscores the challenges President Barack Obama faces in selling his terror-fighting policies.

Even so, the latest Associated Press-GfK survey also shows that Obama enjoys broad confidence that he can effectively handle terrorism in an era when many people say they still fear becoming a victim of it and when a swath of the public shares the views of Obama's Republican predecessor, George W. Bush.

At the same time, Obama hasn't lost support — he has a strong 64 percent job-approval rating — and nearly half of Americans still think the country's headed in the right direction. That's despite bipartisan rebukes of the new president's ordered closure of the Cuban island facility and former Vice President Dick Cheney's sustained criticism of Obama's approach to terrorism.

    • I think this poll is full of shit and probably conducted by Dumb Ya and Cheeneey supporters. These people are on a campaign trying to cover thier tracks and will stop at nothing to avoid being prosecuted for thier crimes. These people are scum of the earth who belong in prison for life.

    • How can anyone condone torture if they have never experienced it? MAYBE if it was only used on guilty individuals and it gathered reliable intelligence one could at least make an argument for it. But that is not the case. Torture boils down to nothing more than evil, sadistic, grotesque revenge and I would be curious to know how many times that revenge has been carried out on innocent people in the name of US security? If this poll is accurate I am embarrassed for 52 percent of Americans! I also find it interesting that some Americans can be so ready to let their country torture people and yet be so afraid to imprison them in the US. Who gives a rats ass if they get access to a legal defense. If they are guilty I am not worried about them escaping. If they are innocent I AM worried about them not being released. Let the innocent live their lives. We do not have the right to take that away from them just so we can feel safe.

    • It's interesting how 100% of 7 people so far think that torture should not be condoned or practiced when the poll that is mentioned says that just over half think that it's at least okay sometimes.

      1. Torture needs to be defined internationally.
      2. We should apply the golden rule. People cannot condone torturing humans in one instance then think that it is unacceptable when their own countrymen are tortured.
      3. We have to acknowledge that some forms of torture has successfully garnered good intel in the past (the French obtained good intel by torturing North Africans).
      4. We must also acknowledge that there is no empire/country that has successfully oppressed or maligned a people indefinitely with these harsh tactics. For instance, France eventually gave up their African colonies just as Native Americans, African Americans, and Jews eventually threw off their oppressors.

    • Ask the half that thinks tortue is justified, if they would think so were it an American GI in an Iraqi prison?

Bet their dumb asses would whistle a different tune then!

    • Justified to the point of murdering someone? Please do not forget there were over 30 homicides as a result of "harsh interrogations." how much information did they get out of these people?

    • wow. Says more about the people than anything else I have heard. I am totally shocked by this............and still question how accurate this poll is, even in a nation that still has the death penalty in force.

I'm horrified by such cold hatred.

Human life should transcend everything.....even hate.

By all means killers should be brought to book......and I believe in harsh prisons, but not torture.

Considering that the people in Guantannamo were mostly innocents anyway it is very bad.
