“Arm yourself….with knowledge!”
Captain’s Comments
June is a month of street fairs, demonstrations and protests in the Central District. Many schools let out and thus, we’ll see many more kids of all ages out and about during the daytime hours. Be aware and use your defensive driving skills during commute hours and during your day when children are on the streets.
If you have children, take some time to go over traffic rules while as a pedestrian and on bicycles, skate boards, scooters and other modes of transportation. Give the old bike a once over and tighten screws, bolts and chains. I had a rude awakening when, during the last leg of a very long bike ride, a cog popped off of my rear derailleur. A simple check of my bike would have saved me a long walk with an otherwise perfectly good bike. Don’t forget to always wear a helmet and clothes that will not get caught in wheels, chains or drive trains.
Go over public transportation safety rules as well. Be aware of surroundings and when in doubt or if a situation becomes scary, have them sit as close as possible to the driver. Horseplay near rail transportation is never a good idea, whether on Muni Metro, BART or Cal Train.
“Collect Your Prize!” Scam
Over the past week, we have heard from several individuals who say they have been contacted to put money up front to collect a prize at a public place later on in the week. Several people were conned into doing just that. Remember to be wary of the something for nothing schemes and even the something for something schemes. All of the fraudulent trick and device ‘cons’ have something in common: they look to exploit individuals hopeful to win or otherwise get something free or for little return. Hang up on telemarketers and shred and toss unsolicited similar mail as well.
Graffiti vandals have scarred North Beach and Chinatown recently. Please call 911 if you see acts of graffiti or other vandalism in progress. Use 311 to report the mess to get it cleaned up asap. There is a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of graffiti vandals of up to $250.

Aggravated Assault/Sexual Battery 400 block of Broadway
On 5/31/09 at 1:55 AM, a woman and two friends were exiting a club on the 400 block of Broadway when a 24 year old male from SSF walked up to them and grabbed the woman’s buttocks. One of the friends challenged the male who, in turn hit the victim in the face with such force to knock him to the ground where he lay unconscious. Two Officers from the Market Street Squad, Officers Baca and Leong witnessed the assault and took the assailant into custody after brief resistance and chase. The victim, a 22 year old male from Los Gatos was taken to SFGH where he was revived and treated. The suspect was booked for felony assault and sexual battery. On 5/30/09 at 1:20 AM an off-duty adult entertainer from San Jose said she received a counterfeit $100 bill while working at a “bikini bar” in Sunnyvale. She was detained when she attempted to pass the bill at an adult theatre on the 400 block of Broadway. We have received 3 or more similar bills passed in the district in the past week.
We have been fortunate to have the Traffic Company Solo Motorcycle Violence Reduction Unit on hand to help deal with traffic related problems associated with the area. These officers do a great job of keeping traffic flowing and reduce the likelihood of street “Side Shows” “cruising” and vehicle to vehicle altercations. They provide a presence on the Broadway Corridor as well as on ancillary streets in the immediate neighborhood.
Crimes of Note:
5/27/09 10:40 PM Stolen Auto Clay/Spofford Alley
Officers Michael Phillips and Sean O’Brien observed a vehicle being operated erratically and attempted to stop it after discovering that it had been reported as being stolen. They chased the vehicle and 4 Asian male teenagers to Clay and Spofford Alley in Chinatown. All of the suspects fled on foot in the area. The vehicle was secured and one suspect was captured.5/28/09 4:43 AM Prostitution 1500 Pine Street
Officer Oliver Lim observed a 44 year old male from SF appear to be running prostitutes from his car. Officer Lim identified two 20 year old women from Fairfield attempting to flag down men in passing vehicles.5/30/09 10:46 AM Drugs 1100 block of Jackson
Officers investigated complaints of a woman living in a garage and receiving visitors at all hours of the day and night. The woman was identified as a 33 year old white female on probation. A search yielded 26 suspected Ecstasy pills in her possession.5/30/09 1:49 AM ADW Columbus/Beach
Several Officers from Central Station responded to a large fight emanating from a club. One suspect, a 21 year old from El Sobrante was seen swinging his belt as a weapon, striking other people leaving the club. At least three people were hit, with one receiving treatment by ambulance at the scene. The suspect was booked for aggravated assault and resisting arrest.5/30/09 12:30 AM Drugs Geary/Hyde
Officers Amanda Cordoba and Esther Gonzalez spotted a man driving a vehicle erratically at Geary and Hyde, refusing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The officers stopped the vehicle and after some evasion on the part of the driver, they determined him to be in possession of controlled substances, driving with a revoked license and an active parolee. He was booked and the vehicle was towed for impound. - 2 years ago
