Same-sex marriage officially legalized in New Hampshire!

Image

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire's governor has signed legislation making the state the sixth to allow gay marriage.

Gov. John Lynch was Surrounded by cheering supporters of the move as he signed the three bills about an hour after the key vote on the legislation in the House.

The law will take effect in January, exactly two years after the state legalized civil unions. New Hampshire joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont and Iowa in recognizing same-sex marriages, though opponents hope to overturn Maine's law with a public vote.

Lynch demanded -- and got -- language protecting the rights of religious opponents of gay marriage before signing the bills.

    • I just think its funny where we, as Christians, put our priorities. I have a friend who is for gay marriage, and is sick of Christians "going off" about gays.

It makes me pause and think. Why is it that we, as Christians, seem to make this a rallying cry, but then wander thru our own lives sinning everyday? We steal cable, or lie on our taxes. We mutter under our breath terrible things about someone, or look at porn in the privacy of our own home. We cheat on our spouse, or make up reasons why we live with someone but wont get married. We curse, drive in anger, forget to pray, skip church, fail to help a friend, fail to help a stranger, judge others.....

By condemning one particular thing we feel so much better about ourselves. It just seems to me that we are all broken, and that we can push those in need away from Christ instead of towards Him. We keep the Holy Spirit from entering that person and beginning the process of change. It seems to me that we have a whole lot of mess in our own home that we should clean up before we start pointing fingers. More and more I lean towards loving someone thru their problems, and allowing God to do His work.

I simply am not worthy of judging...I am only made righteous thru Gods forgiveness and daily ongoing grace. Its a one sided gift that I simply cant understand. I can only be thankful.

How many people will we, as Christians, push away from finding Christ thru our judgment? Are we so great and sinless that we cant understand that its in sin that we all approached Christ? Have we become so blind to our own lives that we can no longer see that we each sin on a daily basis? Have we forgotten that ANY sin separates us from God? What gives us the right to pick and choose who to accept into the fold and who to push away? Did ALL sin stop for any of us the moment we accepted Christ, or has it been a process of growth brought on by the Holy Spirit. If our sin has not stopped then why have we chosen to tell others that they MUST stop their sin when they accept Christ just because it happens to be a sin that we can "see", as opposed to the sins that WE are all so good at hiding. Why cant we allow people to find Christ, forgiveness, and the Holy Spirit first?...Sometimes it strikes me that, as Christians, we are all consumed with behaving like a flock of vultures dead set on picking the flesh from others until all that remains are the bones of the fallen.
ALL are welcome....ALL are to be loved.

You fail to see that you dont NEED Jesus or religion to be a good person. I try to help people in need no matter who they are. To hold open a door for an elderly women instead of just letting it slam behind you. Helping out a single mother with groceries. Giving a friend a ride to work. Its called being a good person and doing the right thing.

So i must ask you why are you so against gay marriage and homosexuality in general? The lives of these people are not interfering with yours. In fact if you are half the christian you think you are then you should be FOR gay marriage. Love thy neighbor Cindy.

    • It's sad that TOLERANT EQUALITY FOR EVERYONE is even an issue. But it's great progress is afoot, albeit slowly. C'mon,... you homophobic, prejudiced wankers - let freedom ring,... and accept your neighbor. Remember,... being an intolerant, racist, prejudiced, angry, Old-World crank will not only stunt your progression,... but all of ours. Just look at all the responses these stories beget.
Good job New Hampshire. Who's next?

Nietzsche writes about this Christian longing for secret revenge "ressentiment" (french).

Cindy exemplifies this perfectly. Many Christians relish the idea of the unsaved soul, roasting in hell. For many, this is one of the best things about being a Christian, the passive aggressive satisfaction in looking forward to the suffering of your fellow human.

It is just one reason why Christianity is such an ugly but powerful crutch for the weak of mind and ignoble of spirit.

    • @23485768934756 Are you calling me a neo Nazi because I support full equality -- even if it is won in the judicial system? (In New Hampshire's case it was a legislative and executive decision.) Did you know that gays and lesbians were among those slaughtered by the Nazi's? The pink triangle was used to identify gays and lesbians (pictured above).

I am not easily offended, but you just went over the line.

    • It’s always the neo Nazi’s who want only a few to decide the needs of the many. I find it hilarious that when it comes to the craddle issues somehow you defer to the safety commission to protect you and make the RIGHT decision.

In case you didn’t know one does not have to be a lawyer or have a legal background to serve on the US Supreme Court. The few who signed the constitution did that on purpose.

By the way, I hope you have fun at your parade. Having a parade is not issue. The issue is democracy.

Neo Nazi's? What are you talking about? And why would we want to nominate someone with no legal background to serve on the Supreme Court? For what possible reason?

      Please...try to make some sense.

    • I love how this is becoming less and less of a firestorm. Earlier stories about same-sex marriage brought out the worst in people. Few of them are even bothering any more. Current did not even feature this as a major story on the home page (yet). Are we at a point where people are getting used to equality? Is gay marriage no longer a controversy? Can we just fast forward this very slow process and have equality in every state now, please? After all, a right delayed is a right denied.

    • Gay marriage wasn't banned in CA because of the election of Republicans to state office.. Prop 8 was passed by a vote of the people of California. I personally don't believe that human rights issues should ever be up for a vote because people will obviously vote with their prejudices.. California needs to reconsider all of these propositions. Unfortunately, with so many uneducated, prejudiced people.. It's better to keep human rights issues up to the courts.

On a lighter note.. the gay pride parade in west hollywood is this month.. hooray! ... and way to do what's right, New Hampshire.

It's petty shit like this that really makes it hard for me to take conservatives seriously. The man has earned a night off and if he wants to take his wife to New York, that's his business. I don't remember hearing all this taxpayer dollars when Bush traveled back to Crawford every other weekend. Not to mention the point Morgan makes (an order of magnitude more money wasted...as well as the loss of American lives). It's posts like this that make it more and more clear to me why people are bailing on the right in droves.

    • "Then, the bigots and the narrow-minded, the intolerant and the federalist, whose internal rage for tyranny cannot be quenched, wanted only a few to decide the fate of what the many had already chosen."

LOL! Yes, my never ending thirst for tyranny, THAT'S what drives my desire to see people treated equally! It's my bigotry that drives me to see fair treatment for all! The flame of raging intolerance burns inside me!

Sorry, I thought a dramatic response was appropriate to such rhetoric!

Honestly, there are some things I don't want the majority deciding. They haven't always done right by equality issues and I don't think people should vote on whether or not to give minorities the same rights as everyone else; it should be a given. Unfortunately there are still so many fighting for equal representation and the idea that people can vote on your civil liberties is frankly quite frightening. If the federal government should be getting involved in any aspect of our lives, it's to protect the basic rights of it's citizens.

Oh yeah, and GO NH! You're next, NY!

    • If Rhode Island legalizes gay marriage (it hasn't banned or legalized it), the entirety of New England will have same-sex marriage legalized.

New England: the liberal equivelant to the South. Lol.

    • I know change can be hard, but the world is passing you by 23485768934756. There will be a another ballot initiative in California soon enough. And next time the Mormon church won't be able to have undue influence. There was a time when women didn't have equal rights, and that changed. There was a time when African Americans didn't have equal rights, and that changed. And now this is changing. 50 years from now we'll look back at this time and try to remember how people could have ever thought like you.

Maybe. Maybe not. I don't know and neither do you. But I do know that for the most part policy in this country is not determined by popular vote. And maybe at the time a woman's right to vote wouldn't have passed by a popular vote...but it would today. Maybe at the time civil rights for African American's would have passed a popular vote...but it would today. And one day civil rights for LGBT Americans will too. It's called progress. And like I said, you can either get on board...or get left behind. Your choice.

    • It’s s a said day when people cannot accept the virtues of a democratic society. The open mindedness of democracy prevailed. In the State of California in all her glory, put the issue on the ballot for the people to decide. Everyone in State of California was allowed to vote. In essence everyone, not just a few elitist, was able to make there input known. The State of California opened her doors to democracy and alouded the people to decide. The people have spoken!

Then, the bigots and the narrow-minded, the intolerant and the federalist, whose internal rage for tyranny cannot be quenched, wanted only a few to decide the fate of what the many had already chosen. They went to the State Supreme court. Her purity remained intact and democracy prevailed.

For those of you who do not understand democracy, it is important that you read the community rules to learn how it works. 

In case you didn't know the people decided in California not the legislature or the governor

In case you didn’t know not everyone believes the way you do. Some people believe in free will.

you know we're not a democracy but a Republic right? A republic rejects the idea that the majority should rule, thats why we have a Legislative branch, an executive branch and a Judicial branch. It's called checks and balances. This is Poli-Sci 101 type stuff
