In Peru's Amazon: Indigenous leaders oppose a government push to develop their ancestral lands illegally and have had to do so with force. The government has killed 15 Natives and reports that 5 police were killed in the most recent land-grab attempt. Gas exploration on their ancestral lands in Peru's Amazon has again spotlighted the traditional plight of Native Americans. With the push for more energy the Indigenous People have been forced to protect what little land they have left.

    • The headline Current gave this story is outrageous! Shame on you, Current!

3 times more indigenous people have been killed than police!
And NO ONE would have been killed if police hadn't opened fire from a helicopter on the indigenous people below who were peacefully protesting the destruction of their homeland & livelihoods!
I'm proud of the people for courageously fighting back against the greed & tyranny of the corporations, and their own government.
SHAME on the Peruvian government for selling out the resources of their indigenous people without giving the people any say in the decision!

    • This is so sad.
Destroy a people and a way of life. Pack them away and put them in huts in a polluted environment and tell them it will be better for them.
Bet none of those corporate bastards live there.

    • same thing is happening in India where the locals are trying to prevent their sacred mountian from being mined by either the gov or private companies. They've set up road blocks.

It was on current about 4 months ago, i'm going to try and find out how they are doing.

    • For some reason, I thought Peru had a more progressive and responsive government.
Just goes to show...that's what I get for thinking.
Money talks and all others can like it or die.
Will man ever quit raping this planet and the people that wish to live with it?

    • This is a small fact of every 3rd world country. People live on their land for generations, and one day the government comes in and says it is no longer theres, because the government sold it to Dole to grow bananas, or an oil company to drill, or a mining company, or a logging company....this happens all over the world over and over again. It is one of the main reason that citys are becoming larger as people migrate off their land and into the city to survive amongst the highly condensed poverty that already exists.
