Israel: "Stop the Settlements Now!": Help Obama Make this Possible-Here's How

Petition to the Government of Israel and the United States Congress:In the words of President Obama, just as Israel's right to exist cannot be denied, neither can Palestine's. We do not accept the legitimacy of continued settlements in the West Bank. They violate previous agreements and undermine efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop.

President Obama's speech in Egypt yesterday was a stunning step toward achieving Middle East peace. His first new move: to press Israel's right-wing government to stop their self-destructive policy of building settlements on Palestinian land.

But Obama needs help from around the world to face down the powerful opposition already mobilising against him.

Let's raise a massive global chorus immediately to support Obama’s statement that the settlements in occupied territory must stop, by joining our voices to a petition based on his very own words.

Quotes from US President Barack Obama's Cairo speech:

- "I am convinced that in order to move forward, we must say openly the things we hold in our hearts, and that too often are said only behind closed doors."

- "Just as Israel's right to exist cannot be denied, neither can Palestine's. The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements. This construction violates previous agreements and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop."

Add your name for peace now! And pass this to the people of the world.

Please sign the petition at the link...thank you!

    • Dore Gold from the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs discusses recent U.S. efforts to constrain natural growth construction in the West Bank, and the contradictions inherent in this policy.

"Given the fact that the amount of territory taken up by the built-up areas of all the settlements in the West Bank is estimated to be 1.7 percent of the territory, the marginal increase in territory that might be affected by natural growth is infinitesimal. Moreover, since Israel unilaterally withdrew 9,000 Israeli settlers from the Gaza Strip in 2005, the argument that a settler presence will undermine a future territorial compromise has lost much of its previous force"

There is obviously more here than what we are being told. Whether the US was "giving" Israel the missile defense system and wanted to avoid complaints from other countries or it was bad/old information, he had to be a double agent or something. I do not think he would have gotten off this easily no matter what his age if the government was not complicit in his actions. On top of that he made $104000 in '07 through investments? Yeah sure. Whatever.

    • You have made enemies everywhere you have been....the reason we Europeans sent you to the gas chambers.

Trouble.....always were and always will be trouble.

Your the tail that wags the American dog for too long......but the American people are seeing past your lies.......and don't like that Israel has spied on the USA and then the lobby is so strong the whole thing disappears without a word.

Dangerous game trying to suck America in to fight your wars for you.

We all want peace in the Middle East.....and we'll buy the oil, not steal it, in future.

Where Bush refused to meet with Yasser Arafat or recognize Hamas' election victory, and outsourced Mideast policy to Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert, Obama has confronted Bibi Netanyahu and handed Israel an ultimatum: Halt all settlement growth, now, and come back to me with your plan for a Palestinian state.

A collision that could shatter the coalitions of both Bibi and Barack now appears inevitable and imminent. Either the president or prime minister is going to have to back down.

    • Breaking Bibi
      By Pat Buchanan
In Israel, the betting is that Barack will break Bibi because Israel cannot defy its last great friend, the lone superpower, upon whom it depends for security, weaponry and diplomatic shelter from U.N. Security Council sanctions. As Rick Wagoner of GM can tell Bibi, you take the king's shilling, you play the king's tune.

    • There is broad agreement that the settlements are a significant barrier to peace, a view also shared by a silent majority of the Israeli public. Combined with a network of roadblocks and barriers, these colonies now blanket the West Bank, seizing territory and forcing Palestinians to live effectively as prisoners in smaller and smaller pockets

Until this problem is tackled, it seems impossible to build a viable Palestinian state or any kind of lasting peace. For Arab states deciding what more they themselves can do for peace, stopping the settlements has become a crucial test of Israel’s seriousness.

We’ll need to urge the other parties to take bold steps too. If we can help Obama to stay the course on settlements, shift Israeli policy and encourage the Palestinians and key Arab states also to stretch out their hands, a new beginning for the Middle East is possible.

But none of this will happen without a growing global movement of citizens taking action to support it. Read Obama’s words, add your signature and spread the word today: Please click the link in the post-thanks
