Teen who lit joint for essay says he knew all the risks

Ian Barry says he wasn’t trying to be a martyr when he lit a marijuana joint last week at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, nor was he trying to pull a stunt.

Simply put, the 17-year-old junior wanted to drive home the message of his persuasive essay: Marijuana doesn’t deserve its negative stigma and should be legalized.

    • Yeah, I was looking through my moms yearbook - Class of '70 something at a school in Western Pennsylvannia. Any ways, the yearbook had a picture of the school's bong club. Unfortunately, they didn't have their bongs with them for the photo opp., but it is still funny to think about. She claims that nobody really new any better, and they just thought it was a political club or something.

    • When I was a kid going to the public schools in Chicago, we used to smoke one hitters in class or fire up joints all the time as we walked down the halls. We just always tried to hide it. That was back in the early 80's.This kids got some balls.

    • I've read both the artical and the essay; This young man has certaily done his homework. The momentum for pot legalization is quickly growing.
