Pfizer offers free prescription drug program

Nearly one million people in Michigan are without health insurance and that number continues to grow in our current economy. But workers at West Michigan drug company Pfizer came up with a plan to help people who've lost their jobs. The program provides free medication for those who qualify.

The program is funded by both the Pfizer and it's employees.

"Their contributions are then matched out dollar-for-dollar by the Pfizer company, so that is in addition to the corporate support, we're providing for this program," says Rick Chambers, a spokesperson for Pfizer. The Maintain Program has a list of qualifications. A person must have lost their job since January, have no prescription drug coverage and have been on a Pfizer medication for at least three months.

There's a list of over 75 medications that qualify under the program including: Zoloft, Diflucan, Lipitor -- even Viagra and birth control injection, Depo-Provera.

"We looked at the primary medicines that are used by patients out there and developed our list on where we saw the need and what we could do to make those medicines available to patients," says Chambers.

The program provides prescription drug coverage for up to a year - but Chambers says it could go longer if there's a need. "Can't make a prediction on how long a particular program might last. but we're committed to doing what we can to give patients access to the medicines they need."
