"The leading worldwide expert on lung health announced recently that marijuana does not cause lung cancer in his study on the effects of cannabis and the lungs. In fact, Donald P. Tashkin, M.D, Professor of Medicine, Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory, Geffen School of Medicine, thinks it’s about time to legalize marijuana. Yep the guy the opposition has paid for the last 30 years to slag weed thinks marijuana should be legalized. Oh, by the way…he’s just as surprised by the results of the study, which finally demonstrates once and for all that there is no statistical link between pot and lung cancer, as you are.

“What we found instead was no association between cancer and smoking marijuana and even some suggestion of a protective effect, “ says Tashkin.

What? So marijuana not only does marijuana NOT cause lung cancer it will actually reduce the risk of lung cancer? YEP! See the video for yourself."

    • Researchers from the University of Alcala, in Madrid tested the effects of the active chemicals in cannabis called cannabinoids on three human prostate cancer cell lines - called PC-3, DU-a45 and LNCaP.

The prostate cancer cells carry molecular 'garages'- called receptors- in which cannabinoids can 'park'.

The scientists showed for the first time that if cannabinoids 'park' on a receptor called CB2, the cancer cells stop multipyling.

    • The cure for cancer, and other things...part 3 of 7
In one of his videos he stated he cured over 1000 people of cancer. Hemp helped America gain its freedom, and Legal Tender means "trading in cannabis" for those who don't know.

    • From what I can tell all of this is based on research that is at least 3 years old. Why was it passed over by major medical groups? Is the research unconfirmable?

haha, the doctor is a pulmonary researcher at UCLA Medical Centre .. one on the best in the world, & you complain about other "major" medical groups? loL, do you do ANY medical journal readings at all??

research done 3 yrs ago saying tobacco causes lung cancer & kills over half a million lives a year is still valid research. the same goes with marijuana research with people that do studies on the scientific facts rather than outside lobbyists who do things for the money factor.

You misunderstand my statement. If the research was done 3 years ago Why is it still unknown? In science there is a process called peer review. When a scientist does research he publishes in a peer review journal and all kinds of other scientists go check his work and see if they can replicate it. Marijuana not causing cancer is big news. Very big news. This means that either:
      (A) it was big news 3 years ago and everyone forgot or just missed it (unlikely but still barely possible)
      (B) The research could not be or has not yet been replicated or some other flaw was found and it never made it into the mainstream
      (C) it took 3 years to replicate the research, in which case there would be an article on it in a science (rather than pot) magazine newer than 3 years old.

actually, I believe the doctor stated the research was done of a couple of DECADES.

I know I read about this study more than 7 years ago seeing as it was while my exwife was pregnant with our youngest who is going to be 7 in September. I remember due to the long drawn out discussion she and I had with a few friends of ours that night.

I'm sure he's been studying it that long. That's how it works. It hasn't been one long 20 year experiment though. you start with and idea, look into it, maybe change it a couple of times, fiddle around with stuff, maybe learn something interesting, explore that venue, get blocked, try another, etc.. Eventually you either run across something really interesting or manage to make something work. Then you publish that. The only thing they test is the end product. That usually doesn't take that long in biology, though it can. Sometimes that test can be more involved than the original research, like with the hadron supercollider

If I remember this right though he was playing with guinea pigs which means unless he's doing generational studies it can't take that long. Guinea pigs only live maybe 5 years.

    • Legalizing pot and the possible harmful effects of pot are two separate issues. I don't have a problem with the first issue, but I do question why this guy is so ready to change his position based on a single experiment. Doesn't he know about Beta or Type II statistical errors?

    • Good Interview! However I wouldn't be so sure entirely. Listen to the video completely. If people smoke pure marijuana without the papers that has chemicals and if they filter the ash that is the result of the over burning, they might have a chance to be more healthy. Let everyone know that each person is different from each other in reaction to their immune system symptoms.

    • GodsNlibs, it's spelled LOSERS. If your going to bash our intelligence, use spell check...

Although a dragging 21 minutes long, I sat through it. No shit you can't get lung cancer from Cannabis. I'm probably crazy by Societal Standards, but I know that smoking Cannabis is definitely not hurting me. There are few feeling greater feelings than smoking atop a mountain while staring back at town with some friends and all saying simultaneously "do we really have to go back there".

try smoking weed and going to work for a living,

( you know that thing one does to earn some money so they would NOT BURDEN the rest of us by using welfare programs of course not unless its a lucrative thing to do these days is to sit idle somewhere staring at each other)..

notice it does not mix to well?

marijuana renders the user INCAPABLE OF making sound judgements and decisions..IT MAKES THEM DEPENDENT..it makes them the 'cheech and chong' of society..YOU CAN SMOKE ALL YOU WANT as long as you know when to stop..kapish??

I know people who are straight sober and can't make shit happen, like my parents. If anything Smoking Cannabis has improved my life. Legal or not I fully intend on keeping it a part of my life.

maybe if you had some SCIENTIFIC PROOF that marijuana turns you liberal people would take u seriously, barbarian man (godsnliberals - thats you).

but theres not any so youre just blabbering ignorantly and making generalizations.

alchohol causes people to lose thier judgement... its very legal. So does codene and doctors perscribe it and its legal. It doesnt seem fair to say that for marijuana and neglect that fact about alchohol.

A lot of things can cause a person to be of the liberal persuasion... should things like COLLEGE and BOOKS be illegal?

    • Seriously!?! A grandfather joke? You must have been one of those socially retarded kids in grade school that everyone made fun of. That's as bad as Biff Tannen's "Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here." Classic tool.

This could have been a very good piece if they had put a little professional effort into it. Like spending a few bucks on a boom mic instead of using the freaking mic on the freaking camera! No wonder everyone thinks stoners are retarded.

If you can’t use pot constructively than that is your problem.

I am a senior business student and nothing works better for relieving stress, lowering social anxiety and generally having a good time.

If it doesn’t work for you than that is fine. However, do not generalize every successful person to ever smoke pot. That list includes people who are a lot smarter and more successful than you.

Everything on here seems to be marijuana/marijuana legalization/police brutality/ anti- Fox News related. If you stand for it whatever, but don't come at me with "fuck you bro"s when I call you guys stoners, when this is the only thing you put your time and effort into (not YOU per se, bet everyone who keeps asking for legalization when they know it hasn't happened yet, and is nowhere near being legal). I've seen at least 30+ articles entitled (kinda) "So Legalized, Brace Yourselves for Bong Frenzy", only for it to be a three page rant on how some governor in butthole nowhere vetoed that shit and people still can't smoke it.
Until something worth value is posted, I'll probably keep blasting stoners.

You're right about one thing, Panzer, we are a longer way from Marijuana legalization than some would like to think. But I'd like to point out a few things:

Pot doesn't "make" retards, and while I'm sure you didn't mean retard in the literal sense of the term I work with the developmentally disabled so I just gotta tell ya, that's a crazy thing to say (and insensitive. If you care.)

There is no reason to blast stoners just because pot isn't legal and there is no reason to stereotype people who smoke pot as lazy, stupid, or any other generalizations you may have. Many, MANY people from all walks of life, job titles and social circles smoke marijuana; whether or not that qualifies them as a "stoner" in your mind is yet to be seen, but the classic stereotype of the pot smoker is way off base. Also, "some governor in butthole nowhere vetoed that shit and people still can't smoke it."- Oh, we can still smoke it alright, don't you worry about that. It's just not legal :)

There are a number of reasons to legalize marijuana that range from medicinal purposes to money made from taxes to the variety of uses for hemp. If you'd like to make an argument against stoners and weed, at least come prepared with some actual information; baseless personal attacks and nonsense make other users think you have no clue what you are talking about.

Top stories should be for NEWS. NEWS is planes crashing, bills crashing, stocks crashing, and other general crashings (okay, not really but whatevs). NOT FOR PROVING MORE NONSENSE ABOUT POT. None of this is about your story, sorry to say, but I really care more about the top 20 not being dominated by marijuana shenanigans. I'm sure all your points are valid, but this site's love for everything cannabis is not.

Bow howdy, that Gary Busey face is freaky!

I disagree with you, Panzer. While all of the things that you mentioned are news, I see no reason why marijuana related things shouldn't be considered news as well. Marijuana is a serious issue in the world today- people like you might think it's all stoners who want to get high, and if you are ignorant on this subject, fine. But many of us here on Current are not, and we are educated about the issues surrounding Marijuana legalization. Plus, this post is also about lung cancer, and I consider medical considerations news worthy.

I also disagree with your assessment that the thread has been turned to shit- as you see, all of these comments are neatly packaged underneath your original inaccurate comment, and the only person who ends up looking like they are posting garbage...is you!

This is why trolls will never really win. And if you think I'm the type of person who gets fed up and stops arguing, you don't know me very well, do you? ;)

I love current, it's a butt ton of fun to watch and have fun on. But it gets old sometimes and like everyone likes to make fun of Fox News, I made fun of those who rock the gangeezie. Also trolls always win. How can we not? You give us all teh lulz even though you don't want to.

And there it is.. Good find! thanks :)

The next step I guess is to find out which cannaboids bind, which cells have CB2 receptors, (could be all of them) and what it does exactly to make the cells stop growing.

This sounds a lot like a major research breakthrough for cancer. Still doesn't necessarily mean that smoking pot doesn't cause lung cancer since there's also a ton of ta in it, but it might mitigate. assuming the correct cannaboid (there's probably only one that does this, that's how it usually works) can actually enter the blood stream from smoke and attach correctly after someone sets it on fire.

This research sounds like it's worth watching though

    • I'm skeptical that anything other than your basic air wouldn't cause some sort of negative effect.

Mainly because I'm quite sure lungs aren't built to properly convert marijuana smoke without some sort of problem.

That said I wouldn't care either way, if people want to smoke, as long as they don't do it next to me, I don't care (problem with Cigarette smokers is they have no concern for those around them).

      Interesting study either way.
