Recessionist Living: A Tiny Closet Becomes His Castle

We’ve all heard the phrase, Home, Sweet Home. Well now, there’s Closet, Sweet Closet! That’s right, Sergio Santos’ home in the resort town of Delray Beach, Florida, started out as just a closet. But now, that closet’s become his little 77-square foot castle, a loft that’s five and a half-feet wide, by 14-feet long. “I was really struggling to pay for the place I where used to live. I decided to look for something cheap,” said Sergio. The closet's equipped with a microwave oven and a mini-refrigerator and, upstairs, the loft bedroom. Rent is $150 a month, and furnishing his pad with recycled materials cost a whopping $64.

“I really felt that I wasn’t going to survive for too long here. I really thought I was going to give up,” he said. But he didn’t give up and instead found some peaceful comfort in his humble surroundings. So although his new home might be small in size, Sergio's closet has become his little castle.

Includes photos and a video of his tiny closet-apartment.

    • In fact, I would suggest not using a microwave at all. Raw food would be best, but a wood stove, would suffice, even though wood is a precious resource.

    • I love minimalist living too. Just be careful you don't eat too much microwaved, pre-made food--it's not really that good for you. Without a stove I'd at least have a toaster oven and rely a lot more on fresh and raw food.

    • Hi think_free,

Oh yes, I saw that too. For this guy, everything has its special little place. And that young lady on the right is keeping an eternally ever-vigilant eye on that itsy-bitsy, eensy-weensy tiny spidey-critter! It's not goin' anywhere!

      Best wishes to you!

    • I think that micro-hosing will be the wave of the future. At 39, I'm very intersted in down-sizing my lifr in order to spend money on traveling, but my wife is so challenged by the idea of not having so much stuff...I am considering buying a piece of property somewhere that's very green and leave the rat-race behind....I find the following site very inspiring: http://tinyhouseblog.com/

    • ^ That's true, but that's the funny thing about relativity. For Americans this is considered extremely small, for many this may be considered average.

    • Awesome! this reminds me of my favorite contest which is Apartment Therapy's Smallest, Coolest. I dont think they have the results of 09 up yet but heres last years. Always cool to see what people can do with restricted space.

My boyfriend and I have a 1 bedroom thats just under 500 square feet and its been fun to see how we can maximize the space. Between tons of electronics and books we've had to build shelves and customize the apartment to fit our lives (and our junk!). Ultimately I think our place looks better with our restricted space than if we had tons of space....it forces you to really become creative and minimalist.

    • I have a super small bedroom. It makes you think of what items are really important to you. You must be selective in what you buy since space is such a luxury.

    • If I could find an apartment for under 200 dollars, no matter how small, I'd take it. People occupy far too much space. Most of it should be shared, not personal repositories for superfluous junk.

    • Hi peterinda,

My place is three-bedrooms...Huuuuge! But, like you, everything that I really use is snuggled very close around me, the books I really like, the computer, my large desk. I think that what this guy's managed to do with 77 sq. ft. looks really amazing!

      Best wishes, disembedded.

    • I can really identify with this guy because I have a similar situation. My place is very small and at at first I felt smashed in. But then I made it a challenge to find the exact right place for everything. Now my place is truly me because everything around me fits together like a puzzle and fits me and my medium sized dog like a glove. Computer, desk, drawing table, TV and easel all within easy reach of my comfortable rolling chair.
