Christian group sues for right to burn gay teen novel

In a scene which appears to have been lifted straight out of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, a group of Christians in Wisconsin has launched a legal claim demanding the right to publicly burn a copy of a book for teenagers which they deem to be "explicitly vulgar, racial [sic], and anti-Christian".
The offending book is Francesca Lia Block's Baby Be-Bop, a young adult novel in which a boy, struggling with his homosexuality, is beaten up by a homophobic gang.
The complaint, which according to the American Library Association also demands $120,000 in compensatory damages for being exposed to the book in a display at West Bend Community Memorial Library, was lodged by four men from the Christian Civil Liberties Union.
I find it hilarious/scary that Christians have their own version of civil liberties. Weigh In! Is this free speech or hate speech?

Odd, I found this through a series of clicks and it happened to be from you, Jeff. This is non-sense, utter non-sense. Suing them for exposure in a display case????? Narrow-minded Christian hubris at its best. If I sued [and won] for every undesirable thing I saw or heard on a daily basis I'd be on yacht somewhere by now.

Ok - There are trillions of stars in our galaxy. There are over a hundred billion galaxies that we can see.
THIS is the flesh of God.
You are unimportant. All that stuff that is taught in church is simply untrue. No reality to it. zip. Period. That's it.
Life is short - Stand back and take a sober assessment. Stop throwing your life away. Do something worthwhile. Amount to your potential. Have that shinning life you should have.
You have no time to waste. None at all.You either WILL be everything you should be - or you will not.
This is the best advice you will ever receive in your whole life.

Their suit claims that "the plaintiffs, all of whom are elderly, claim their mental and emotional well-being was damaged by this book at the library."
What about books on killing whole races, abusing and torturing people, bombing whole towns unsuspected, use of poisonous gas in showers? Oh wait, there are books on World War 2... Although it did make for an interesting conversational scene in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.
Oh, don't burn books, bad for the environment.

The hate of God and Christians in these comments is disturbing, are you guys reading what you are spewing.

Nothing any Christian has commented on any post regarding Gays is as hateful and disturbing as this.
Have any of you read the original article, this is a publicity stunt and nothing more.

And gen, you're using your faith to diminish the rights of Americans.
Libraries are important, whether you see fit to visit one or no. Just sit back and watch your electronic news and think what a wonderful person you are.
Here's a flash for you. The Lord believes in you whether you follow your own dictates or no.
I had a discussion once, when I was in jail, with a Southern Baptist preacher that was kind enough to visit those of us incarcerated. His heart was in the right place and he was honestly trying to help.
Well, the conversation went on for a while My fellow inmates were glad of my diversion from them. For myself, and this minister, a good time was had.
He maintained that unless I was born again, then I was going to hell. I asked about all the really good people on this earth that hadn't had the opportunity to know of Jesus. He said they were going to hell.
I told him that any God in charge of this planet wouldn't send someone to hell just because they'd not had the opportunity to know Jesus. Made no difference to the guy.
This is crap. I said so. I still maintain it. I believe in the Lord. I don't believe in his version of it. Does this make the Lord wrong? Nope. This makes this guy wrong.
So get a life, OK? Use your own judgement. Did the Lord not give it to you?

Boy, belief in the Lord, or Allah, or whatever name you care to apply is sure a fiery topic isn't it?
Now why would that be? 83 responses I see to this - so far. Some have expressed a belief in the Lord, others are busy trying to smack it down. And we go merrily along fighting amongst ourselves - everyone convinced they have the right of it.
Why is this such an emotional topic? You either have a belief or you don't. This requires fired up? All religions have rules that are supposed to direct you how to live your life. But this is America. You can give credence to it, or no. Your choice - no penalty. At least not an earthly one; depending on how you look at it.
For myself I have a belief in the Lord, although I can't really call myself a Christian. My belief is personal but it works for me. And what I think is real easy to say. You can believe in the Lord or not as it suits you. But I think the Lord believes in you. Your opinion of it not withstanding. What's there to fight about? I'll be me - you be you. We've got a life here to live and I'm sure we'll all do the best with it we can manage.
There have been a number of posts that actually hit on the topic. And the topic, it seems to me, is we have a group of folks that want to restrict libraries. I'm sorry; that doesn't fly with me. Information, on any and every topic, should be available to anyone that wants to read it. period. You have problems with your kids? Well, you're the parent - deal with it. This is hard?

Not only that, but in America, particularly if one is not Christian, they are looked down upon even more by a lot of people. I don't get as much credence being non-Christian as I would if I openly declared being a Christian.

Yes and regarding my historical note: The question was, why?
The answer is that the whole notion of god, as presented through religion and preachers is not real - not anywhere in the universe. Nowhere is there any such stuff. Nowhere.Just plain nowhere. There never, ever has been. It is dribble, start to finish - even though I know you have different and ardent views and honestly, and earnestly taken views. Certainly one of us has the truth balled up.
I do not intend insult - but my friend, you have have it balled up.
And the social and living problem is - it just takes a little break down in society for the new generation of uneducated imbeciles to skin people once again in the streets, calling them witches and unbelievers.
Just a little break down and the "Christians" will be out in lynch mobs - once again. They'll burn the buildings and break the greatest and grandest art to pieces.
If you guys looked at the Universe, just a little tiny bit - you'd see the flesh of the God you've been talking about your whole lives. But it doesn't look anything like what the bible says.
That's why you're all so afraid to look.
Cause once you look, all that religion thing, it'll be as gone as you can well guess that it will be.
Because religion is bs, it's cosmology is bs, start to finish. And that's the real, real, real truth of it.

@ all but particularly GodsnLibs
I think there is a major misconception going on here:
It IS legal to burn things. If these people wanted to burn this book according to their civil rights, they could buy a copy and, in accordance with their area's laws, burn away. No one is arguing against that right.
The reason these people have a lawsuit in place seems to be because they either want to burn the library's book or receive some kind of special permission to burn the book publicly.
From the article:
"a legal claim demanding the right to publicly burn a copy of a book for teenagers which they deem to be "explicitly vulgar, racial [sic], and anti-Christian""the plaintiffs, all of whom are elderly, claim their mental and emotional well-being was damaged by this book at the library," and that it contains derogatory language that could "put one's life in possible jeopardy, adults and children alike."
"The word 'faggot' is very derogatory and slanderous to all males," the suit continues. "Using the word 'Nigger' is dangerously offensive, disrespectful to all people. These words can permeate violence." The suit also claims that the book "constitutes a hate crime, and that it degrades the community".
(I think it's weird that the book is stated to be for Teenagers but the people suing are stated to be Elderly...)
Anyway, we can not censor a book simply because it contains things we don't like. These people could easily burn their copy of this book without any need for a lawsuit, but they are ALSO looking for $120,000.
No one's "rights" are at stake here (only common sense and sanity.)

They have a rlght to burn books if they want to. We may not like it, but it's their right. Keep in mind that we also have a right to protest their book burnings.
And, I don't support burning Bibles like some people suggested. Not only is it an insult to all Christians, rather than just those burning books - it is also essentially us becoming them - bigots.

I don't think it's the book burning that is the problem; it's the fact that they want to specifically burn the library's copy, at least that's what I'm getting from all of this. As far as I'm concerned, there would be no need to sue to burn just any copy of the book, as that is already legal. It's either that or they are specifically seeking permission to burn it publicly, which they probably need some kind of permit for. Plus they are suing the library for $120,000 for "being exposed" to this book.
They could easily purchase a copy of this book and burn it themselves according to the burning laws of the place they live- but they've chosen not to do that. This lawsuit is more about attention than anything else.

But they are sueing the library association demanding money because they library was founded by a Christian group?
If the Christian group had a problem, then they should ban the freaking book. And is the library a CHRISTIAN library? If it's a PUBLIC library they have NO RIGHT to ban ANY book.

hmm, deserves my copy-over again. Concerning God.
The situation - with all of us - is whether we suffer of absolute illusion. Considering, of course, that our very brains are creating the images we see of the world.
And our brains fool us, with great regularity - yes?
But we all try, - and the subject of God has total effect. Total effect on us and into society.
Is there a God? - The God that people in religions have come to be taught?
My position is, (since the otherwise taboo subject is raised on current) - there cannot be any old answer that anybody wants to come up with.
It is either true - or not.
Very few people are so wishy-washy and devoid of a spine that their beliefs and the reality of God actually don't matter to them. The question does matter.
People usually think of God as the man with a beard, who created the Universe so that those who pray to Him will be saved (be reborn again after death).
- you all know the drill.
I see enough, and I believe most people understand enough about the Universe, at this time, to know that that the particulars of that cosmological view are simply not real.
There's no man with beard hiding in the sky who made the whole of the Universe just so we humans don't have to die.
There's a famous Hubble picture of a pinpoint in the heavens, where 10,000 galaxies are seen. There's lots of pinpoints in sky. When looking up, we see a Universe of billions upon billions of galaxies expanding in all directions.
We're a little species on a little dot, in a little corner of a little galaxy.
We here, residing entirely in the last two micro-seconds on the known clock. - The dinosaurs lived 500 times longer than we.
The real directionality is straight down toward the gravitation center, but our two eyes are on the watch-out for predators. So we actually thought the world was flat.
That's the basic proclamation of religions, the world is flat, God made it for you and made all the animals for you. Does this not sound a little childish?
Then look at the composition and functions of things small - that starts looking as complex as the heavens.
You have more bugs living in you than there is you.
All of the Universe, no matter where you look, expands in substance - completely beyond the specifications proclaimed by all the religions.
So much so, that it is the Universe itself that meets all the requirements placed for the Creator.
So the creator and the Universe are one. (God is One) - That's what the original idea the one God believers told those who asked: "There's no 'Gods', there's just one big, nameless oneness. Once you put a name on it, you have created an illusion."
Of course, this got co-opted into religion by priest types who hadn't vaguest idea about God.
So the situation becomes, for our little current discussions, is faith placed into obviously illusionary beliefs, a waste of one's time? Is that faith misplaced?
Remember, one's good mind and intellect and curiosity will take that person to exactly as rich a mentality that they are capable of, whether the specifics of their understanding.
A good man will gravitate to his own good nature.
It is my feeling that we want, you and me and everyone else, and should allow ourselves to gain as much and as rich a view as possible.
That means seeing the truth, as best as one can.
While many benefits are heralded for "spirituality" where therein is the threshold that 'need for beliefs' choke off reason? Where is one's need for God, to eliminate that very understanding that is sought? Where does one get trapped by holding to an idea one found in the past?
I once said, if I pray to a bottle cap - for all my life, what an obvious waste, correct?
So it is important what the truth is, is it not?
And that's what we're here for, in this discussion, what is the truth? The real truth - not illusion. - 2 years ago

Ah. Well if the people that believe in god could explain it or argue for it using logic or reason, there would be less of a problem. However the REAL way these conversations go is something like this:
"God is real."
"Prove it."
"Prove it's not."
*facepalm*I'd think the burden of proof is on the believer, but apparently it's enough to say that because you can't DISprove god, it exists. With this type of logic we can also assume unicorns, the tooth fairy and Zeus also exist. But people don't argue for unicorns (poor creatures, they have no advocates!), they argue for their version of god, religion and spirituality.

Yeah, that expression is the same, slow typically christian autonom. A non-thinking robotine wax head.
If there were a god, he'd be the guy on the left - so pissed at people for throwing away the life given them - believing in make-up children's stories.
Children's stories!
Avoiding looking at the real god - which is everywhere, right in front of their faces.Yeah, would he be pissed. You'd be pissed if you were god - right?

Just like stereotyping homosexuals and all groups is wrong, please don't stereotype Christians based on this story.

That's a fair point. But it would be equally unjustifiable to ignore the reality that the vast majority of those burning books and censoring others in America are self-identified Christians.

hate to break it to you but the bible is just some mass produced pieces of paper. Burning it is not going to change your mind, Just like burning this "controversial" book will not change my mind about how awesome gay people are. They show more about love than most "christians" do and while I believe in God, I don't think the bible (written by dumb ass humans just like us) should be followed word for word. That is just plain dumb. Do you really think there was a man who built a boat and put two of every animal on it??? That is not even possible today. You christian people need to focus on love, not on hate, not on the bible, and not what your parents told you was right.

There's no after life. Which means your real life, is of utmost importance.
That's why you don't want to throw it away.
No amount of egotism nor passion, nor wishing will change what is real into what is illusion.

There's only here and now - forever. Unfortunately, YOU are simply not all that important.
Everything changes - that's the only permanent deal.
When you're gone, it's someone else's turn. Just like it's your turn now. Don't sit around wasting it. This is your whole time and whole chance. The end.
ps: This is the best advice you will ever receive in your whole life.

There is some degree of irony when individuals who typically decry political correctness go off and sue because a book was displayed that hurt their feelings. That's just censorship disguised as moral indignation. And last time I checked, you're not allowed to burn public property. Aside from it being overtly fascist and appalling, it's illegal.

Although I would consider this hate speech, they have the right to burn the book if they buy their own copy.

I say let them go out and buy their own copy and burn it. Its their right as an american to burn their own stuff as long as they do it safely. But don't burn a library book. period. and seriously? 120k in emotional damages? what kind of drugs do they do in their state? and side note, I've read this book and I think that it was poorly written and not worth this controversy

What does gay pride month have to do with this? Why do you feel the need to do a little gay bashing?
There is no moral equivalence between these backward, ignorant bible thumpers trying to burn books, and gays celebrating and affirming life. To suggest such a thing is deeply misguided, reflects a lack of sensitivity and is morally suspect.
Your homophobia is showing, and it is quite unattractive.

You're right. What could be more ridiculous than recognizing the struggle of gays and lesbians not to be killed in the streets, harassed, denied employment, and marginalized? It's not like we'd want to recognize the end of those things as a triumph of humanity. Gays suck.

Well, I think all of the designated pride/recognition days/weeks/months are kind of stupid myself. I mean, I came across a poster advertising "Stalker Awareness Month" in January. In my anthropology classroom there was an ad for Illinois Archaeology Awareness Week or something along those lines. Isn't that kind of absurd?
I also feel like official recognition periods for people/movements more open the door to further discrimination than anything productive. If I was a racist I wouldn't care about Black History Month, but I'm not and I still don't really care because I've studied it all ad nauseum. If I were another historic minority like the Irish, however, I'd be pissed that my people's struggle doesn't have its own month.

At any rate, I'd say let them burn the book. Then they can pay the library for damages and processing fees for buying a new book. Then they'll try to file a counter-suit after they refuse to play, citing religious reasons. And then the state justice department will shut them up, and shut them down.
And then that will be that.
Of course, it'd be much faster to just say "screw off, buy your own copy", and save everyone a whole lot of time. More time to go praise Jesus, right? Right.
The $100 grand in damages is just obvious bullshit.
