Leaked election results show Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came third

Image
WakeUpPeople
Iran's reformist presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi has called off a major rally to protest last Friday's election results, amid claims police had been cleared to open fire on protesters.

Supporters had been due to turn out en masse in Tehran on Monday afternoon, despite government warnings to stay off the streets.

But this morning, a statement on Mr Mousavi's campaign website announced that the demonstration had been postponed – although it said Mr Mousavi would go to the site to ensure any supporters who showed up remained calm.

Mr Mousavi's wife and co-campaigner, Zahra Ranavard, was reported as warning that riot squads would be equipped with live ammunition, raising the prospect of serious bloodshed.

Iran's Interior Ministry said Mr Mousavi would be responsible for any consequences if he went ahead with the protest.

Mr Mousavi's cancellation of the protest came as sporadic disturbances continued around the Iranian capital, and reports circulated of leaked interior ministry statistics showing him as the clear victor in last Friday's polls.

The statistics, circulated on Iranian blogs and websites, claimed Mr Mousavi had won 19.1 million votes while Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won only 5.7 million.

The two other candidates, reformist Mehdi Karoubi and hardliner Mohsen Rezai, won 13.4 million and 3.7 million respectively. The authenticity of the leaked figures could not be confirmed.

Mr Mousavi has accused Iran's government of "fraud" after Mr Ahmadinejad was declared on Saturday to have 62.6 per cent of the vote, making him the landslide winner. The capital has been rocked by disturbances for the last three days.

    • This is no different amongst any other country. If Americans would have known how W was going to strip them from their rights and breaking the law, the streets here would have looked similar, and they have in the past. Americans are too complicit with lawmakers and any opposition to do right is but a self interest and not sponsored by any community. Americans always get what they want but too ignorant to know what that is.
I saw an image circulating on current that showed protesters helping a police officer. Can you see that happening in the streets of Los Angeles, Chicago, or DC?

    • Weather he frauded it or not (and I have no doubt he did, if the guy won the majority the entire fucking nation wouldn't be rioting right now) Ahmadinejad has really blown it. He was quite progressive compared to a lot of Iranian leaders (sans his anti-Westernism and anti-semitism) and wanted true democracy and fairness in Iran. All of this shit has just set them back 30 years to the Ayotollah, and maybe even beyond that. I truly pity the Iranians these days.

    • Yes we sit in our homes and these savages have stolen the constitutional and democratic government away from us. You may not realize it but you are all living in limbo. Completely ignorant of what has happened to you and your rights. Remember when the American Indians were the savages? The truth is that the White man who came over here and slaughtered and massacred until the Indian was totally exhausted and reduced to shame and hopelessness and so it is today.

    • When there is doubt there is no doubt. There needs to be an independant review of the counts. This man is a liar. Or they should redo the elections with the UN watching all of the polls. If the people truly want the old president to stay this would not stop that from happening. We want to shrink the world not expand it. WE should be building bridges not blowing them up. All who want it deserve peace.

We sit in our quiet homes and talk about revolution from a distance. But people are dying. I hope the Mullah spends an extra day in hell for every death he is responsible for from the revolution on.

No matter what happens or who wins, may the Truth be fully represented to the Iranian people's. Hopefully all these protests and loss of life will not have been in vain!

      Good Luck Iran!

    • I admire the Iranian people. One thing you can say about them is that they certainly ain't sheep. It is good to see people going out and reminding the government that legitimacy flows only through the people...

I wish them well. There have been other countries where people bend over and allow the government to take ther freedoms without resistance.

Iran has a lot of oil and it's an open enemy of the empire.
Then Uncle Sam uses media power to make
Mr Ahmadinejad look like a tyrant.
Therefore asshole americans and people around the world believe Uncle Sam's shit and tadaaaa A NEW ENEMY IS CREATED.

    • Uroborus8, according to the reports it isn't the government firing but pro-government militia members.

For some decent coverage you might also want to check out this Guardian blog.

    • Tell Hillary Imadinnerjacket that this was his Iowa primary. Diebold can't cheat him in the way Kat Harris and Kenny-boy Blackwell did our Boy George Dumya (or so we pray, at any rate), especially from that distant third place. Sadly, no, sweetie! Imadinnerjacket has to at least come in a very close 2nd to justify the landslide Diebold programmed generation of that questionable extra 2 million votes. Mahmood came in behind the progressive victor, and Ahkmed's pet goat, who, incidently, got double Mahmood's votes. So, Mahmood Imadinnerjacket lost this one fair and square. He now needs to be mature and gracious enough to live with it! His claiming victory in this longshot 'appeal' is guaranteed to get him assassinated in a successful coup, with all the riots and internationally Twittered disgruntlement of the irritated Iranian voting constituency in heated pursuit of government even loosely resembling democracy and libral progression.

      "Mahmood Imadinnerjacket"

If it weren't for the fact that he's a blatant Holocaust denier and all-around asshole, regardless of race, I'd feel so much worse that I can't stop giggling at this nickname.

If this attempted theft of election doesn't end in his assassination, I'll be shocked.

    • I hope this ends with successful revolt, rather than something akin to Tiananmen Square. Armed police versus unarmed protesters never works out good - let's hope some of them have guns.

yeah seriously. I doubt someone going through the trouble of rigging an election would just somehow allow the real results to somehow get out. plus who has any credibility right now in this situation? I'll "leak" my own version of the polls too.

Iraq was only "broken" in that it has massive oil reserves, was not friendly with the U.S., and contributed to the destabilization of the region. However, although there were plenty of problems internally, they are equally worse off now, as in fighting and corruption between the Kurds, Sunni's and Shiites makes for a very unstable democracy.

Having spoken with soldiers who returned from the front lines of Iraq within the last month, although the killings are down, there is little confidence that the Iraqi police force will be able to maintain order once the U.S. leaves. There are lots of corrupt high ranking officials that the U.S. has had to back to gain the stabilization that now exists, and there is no doubt that there will be major issues once the U.S. exits. Although Sadaam Hussein was certainly not a benevolent ruler, it was his tight fist that kept the country together, and from disintegrating into chaos. Democracy is perhaps not always the answer, and it remains to be seen if it will work in a country as ethnically divided as Iraq.
