According to new research presented last week at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Seattle, adequate sleep may underpin our ability to understand complex emotions properly in waking life. "Sleep essentially is resetting the magnetic north of your emotional compass," says Matthew Walker, director of the Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab at the University of California, Berkeley.

Last night I dreamt that my best friend was confessing to having ran over and killed a person with his car and then disposing of the body. He then told me that my ex-girlfriend died years ago but no one told me to protect my emotions. According to the article, dreams are used to separate emotional context from memories. I don't know how exactly this dream did that, but i'm in a much better mood today than I have been for the last two weeks.

Speaking of dreams, I have a lot of regular nightmares. What does it mean??? Supressed anxiety? An overactive imagination? Am I just unlucky?

I wish i could say my dreams afford me a medium to experience my consciousness in the third person or that they are a collage of a radical but more truthful presentation of reality, but the truth is they are mostly dark, wet, slippery recreations of Greco-Roman orgies.
