Atheist Bus Campaign in… New York City!

Image
unimatrix0
This month, some two dozen buses will roll through Manhattan, debuting a 12-foot long, three foot high message, “You don’t have to believe in god to be a moral or ethical person”. Look for the signs as the buses maneuver through the city in late June.

Atheist overkill? Or more of a good thing?

    • Screw unto others before they screw you- now THAT'S a human law! "Do unto others as you want done to you- bless those who persecute you"- that is Christ- we are to be Christ unto the world. "The love of Christ impels us." When human nature (the lust for power, avarice, spite, hatred) is combined with religion, we have wars based on religious conflict, theocracies, and perversion. Mankind has a tendency to corrupt anything he comes into contact with- whether it be religion, nature, fellow humanity. "If you haven't been born again the Bible way, you're going to hell." When well meaning "Christians" preach something like this, is it any wonder so many people are turned off? i.e., "If you don't believe how I believe, you're doomed." The fatal flaw is saying it is these ignorant proseletizers that comprise religious faith. No, they do not. It is never wise to paint all people of faith with the same brush- that's closed mindedness.

    • About time we come out of the foxholes with our message!

That bus is just displaying the truth. And if you need an incentive to do good, like heaven or fear of hell. Well then your really not doing it for the right reasons anyway.

Do unto others as you want done to you is a Human Law. Not a religious one.

    • cztheday, I have known a lot of "christians" who were some pretty piss poor examples. "if going to church makes you a christian, does going to the garage make you a car?"

    • I don't see any problem with the ad -- its just information. One would hope that the message is just common sense, but then again one person's common sense is another person's...well, you get the picture.

The first response is interesting in the sense that she says that people think that just because someone goes to church that he or she is a good person. I just don't think that is quite true. How many dozens of times have all of us heard about the hypocrite who shows up at church every Sunday but who is the most miserable SOB in town Monday through Saturday? I actually think it is pretty common knowledge that going to church does not necessarily translate into being a good person.

Of course if those people are that bad AFTER getting the message that they are supposed to love their neighbors every week, I wonder how much WORSE they might be if they DIDN'T get that message...

The message I would like to see on a bus (but am not sure I am prepared to foot the bill) is that intolerant people suck, regardless of whether they believe in God or not...

    • Or we can do good things every day and not count on are church to do it for us unclecharlie. If you see Atheist doing any thing good ask your self why we did it? Its not for a free ticket to heaven we don't need anyone twisting are arm to do good. In the last 2000 years your method of taking care of the poor and homeless was nice but never got rid of the problem. And its not going to get you in heaven "Heaven is not real".

    • Fine, but since a lot of homeless see those buses, maybe on their posters they can also advertise a soup kitchen or shelter run by these atheists. Just a thought....

    • I say good for them. Religious people go around talking about their belief of choice and nobody bothers them for it, There are to many "religious" people running around being completely immoral, but since they go to Church people think Oh he is such a good person! It seems as if all you have to do is say " I believe in God" and suddenly you can do no wrong. You know, the BTK guy was really involved in his church too... I love their slogan “You don’t have to believe in god to be a moral or ethical person”.

    • ALLNATURALVEGANS:

So, you saying a sociopath like Dennis Raeder is what you consider a typical "Christian". That sounds awfully intolerant to me. Learn to think for yourself- not what your professors tell you to think- it will give you a broader, more informed "worldview".
