With orders now having been given to the Islamic Republic's security forces to use maximum force the demonstrators will have no choice but to get armed in order to defend themselves and their compatriots who are fighting for their basic rights - their human rights - which this terrorist and anti-Iranian regime has denied them since its inception 30 years ago.Despite the bloodshed and violence the demonstrations keep growing larger as people find the courage to fight back against the people who are suppressing them and killing their compatriots.
Two of the notable slogans heard on the streets of Iran today are:
DEATH TO THE DICTATOR!
I WILL KILL WHOEVER KILLED MY BROTHER!

cztheday is, like all of us, afraid for the protestors who risk arrest and goodness knows what. Will this be another situation where hundreds of people just "disappear"? I am also pessimistic about the potential policies of Mousavi but all sides have now played their first hand and it will be very interesting to see the next round.
Mousavi has now pitted himself against the ruling clerics and will have lost many friends there if indeed he ever had any. If, and it is a very big if, he ever gets into power he will know only too well who put him there and would very easily disappoint those who laid down their lives for pluralist democracy. Khamanei has shed the mantle of being above politics and has shown to the world that Ahmedinajad is just a puppet for him and the conservatives. In the eyes of governments world wide the latter will now always be regarded as the monkey and not the organ-grinder. Which leaves the people who want, like most of us, government by the people and for the people and their fearless demonstrations have shown the world that they know what they want and will not be duped into any sham democracy.
If this all ends in the staus quo but with massive bloodshed and disregard for human rights, Iran will have lost the moral high ground and any claim to be the leading nation in the region with or without nuclear weapons. Now, when activity on the streets of Tehran is seen minutes later in the homes of millions around the globe it is as Obama has said "the world is watching". Iran will be as stained as China after Tiananmen Square. Whatever happens things in Iran and the region will not be the same again.

Highroller,
When you say that the protesters have no choice but to "arm themselves" what kinds of options do they have? I assume there is no second amendment-type right to bear arms in Iran. Are people allowed to arm themselves for hunting purposes? Is there a sizeable black market for weapons? My guess is that there probably is -- but that unlike the one in the United States, it is relatively small and the quality of weaponry is pretty uneven -- both due to the penalties involves for arms trafficking, which I would assume to be death. I don't mean to suggest you are an expert in all these things, but you are clearly putting a good deal of time and effort into researching these events so I thought that perhaps in combination with your personal familiarity with Iran, you might at least have a better sense than I of the conditions in this regard.
As I have mentioned a couple of times, I agree completely that these people are likely to be terribly disappointed if they think that Mousavi has any interest in dramatic change in the direction of greater personal freedoms and rights. I think he would be marginally better than Ahmadinejad. On the other hand, this is a dangerous game he is playing. It would take a miracle for the protesters to prevail, but if they did they might not be in the mood for half-measures from Mousavi.
But as much as I hope and pray for their safety, I can't see this ending well for the protesters. The clerics have proven time and again how incredibly ruthless they can be. The gruesome terrorism they sponsor around the world already demonstrates that there is almost no limit to the horrors they are prepared to visit on those they see as enemies...

Tens of peaceful demonstrators have been shot point-blank or knifed to death by the Islamic Republic's paramilitary force, the "Basij", consisting of foreign merceneries and brainwashed and illiterate religious zelots people from rural areas. Reports from people on the scene confirm that many of these merceneries are Arabs imported from Iraq, Palestine, & Syria with no emotional ties to Iran/Iranians and who won't hesitate to crackdown on the demonstrations in the most savage of ways that they have been trained in. There are many disturbing videos that have been uploaded on youtube and elsewhere in the past few days showing Basiji's, riot police, and members of the various branches belonging to the Islamic Republic's Revolutionary Guard mercilessly attacking defenseless people in the streets (men, women, elderly) and breaking into peoples' homes and beating them for no reasons whatsoever. Hundreds of people across the country have sustained injuries and hospitals continue to receive a steady flow of casualties and injured people. There were reports that hospitals across the country had been given orders by the government not to treat injured Iranians which the regime refers to as "thugs, troublemakers, and hoodlums".

i am still uncertain on where the people demonstrating this past week in Iran want to take this growing movement.
Have they risen up because their votes in a sham s-election, supervised by a terrorist and corrupt regime, did not give the results they wished for? Or have people used the s-elections as an excuse to advance the freedom-fighting movement of Iran by using one of the Islamic Republic's selected candidates, Seyed Mir-Hossein Mousavi (an Islamic Republic servant, who served as PM during the darkest years of this terrorist regime marked by the genocide of political prisoners), as an excuse through which they can voice their rejection of this system?
If the demonstrators truly believe that they can bring change through within this regime by bringing Mousavi to power they will be very disappointed when they realize that Mousavi endorses the foundations of this terrorist regime and will only bring cosmetic changes rather than uprooting the rotten system which has thrived on the Iranian nation's wealth and keeping them in the dark/isolated for the past 30 years.
What I truly hope for is that the blood of innocent Iranians has not been shed because of this criminal Seyed Mir-Hossein Mousavi, and the infighting occuring between different factions within the terrorist Islamic system. I truly hope that people have reached a level of awareness where they see that there is no space for fundamental change within this regime and that they need to bring this regime down and hold a free and fair referendum on the future political system of Iran. I hope that people are not risking their lives for reform, which is a road already tried with the Islamic Republic's smiling mullah Khatami, but that people are fighting for freedom and democracy - to have their human rights restored and respected by a government elected by the people for the people.

It's not about Democracy, it's about hegemony and resources and using people to get it. If people dying in Iran or anywhere brings any government closer to getting what they want in resources and control in the Middle East or any region, their lives are worth it to them. They are just collateral damage towards the ultimate goal to them. And actually, I find it interesting how much attention Iran is getting now even here when the slaughter of innocents in Sri Lanka for YEARS didn't even get much attention at all, not even here. Nor does Darfur. What about the struggle of Tamils for years to have that same self determination? Oh I forgot, those people were "terrorists" and the people in Iran are "patriots." Again, if you are on the wrong side regarding what is accepted by this government, you get the appropriate label. And of course regarding Sri Lanka, there is no oil under their feet.

I have that feeling too. I don't think this was a planned cohesive 'revolution' that was begun with a certain certainty of success. And because of that, I am really concerned that should this be quelled the people of Iran will then be clamped down on even more. And too, my concerns that there are clandestine organizations on both sides inciting people to go into the streets for their own agendas are getting themselves killed. I'm all for fighting for freedom, I'm just not so sure of those who may be behind it inciting others to give up their lives having their best interests in mind.
