ABC News president calls GOP’s healthcare attacks a ’sorry spectacle’

The GOP does not like to be told “No.” And, according to ABC News President David Westin, they are not above throwing a “sorry spectacle” to get that point across.

That’s why all 40 members of the Republicans’ newly-formed, so-called “Media Fairness Caucus” signed a letter (PDF link) attacking ABC’s planned conversation on healthcare reform, which will broadcast from the White House on June 24. The group takes exception to being denied ad spots to counter the president’s advocacy of universal health insurance. They claim ABC News will present a one-sided program intended to support the White House’s proposals.

The attacks did not go unnoticed to the editorial planners at ABC News. In a forceful response Tuesday afternoon, ABC News President David Westin promised a “thoughtful” exploration of the debate at hand, carrying a variety of perspectives presented by private citizens.

“Unfortunately, [Republicans] have found it appropriate to criticize a program that has not yet aired,” he wrote (PDF link). “Contrary to your assertions, this will not be ’slanted’ in any way – much less a ‘day-long infomercial’ or ‘in-kind free advertising as you allege.”

Republicans’ criticism on this issue is especially striking considering the Fox network’s integral relationship with Republicans and the prior administration. During the Bush-era, Fox News dedicated huge amounts airtime to pushing White House-drafted “talking points,” according to former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan. The network is also home to numerous Republican editorialists who frequently give guest time to other GOP opinion-makers, but shout down or mock opposing views.

“[Such] criticism ignores the fact that the Bush administration repeatedly gave exclusive access to Fox News, which often used such opportunities to ask softball questions and run specials about the administration,” noted Media Matters.

“We are proud to be making a serious effort to go beyond mere punditry or stylized, bipolar debate; we are proud to work for a network and a company willing to devote valuable airtime to serious consideration of a subject so worthy,” Westin wrote.

    • Gadzooks, heaven forbid a media outlet should actually examine and explain in detail a proposal by government to radically change policy. Can't have that sort of thing oh no sirree bob. Gotta keep people in the dark and distract them with ads.

Glad I live in a part of the world where programming called "the news" involves telling us about "the news" and nobody finds it weird.

    • Good for ABC News President David Westin! So right.

Who knows exactly what is in the minds of the Republicans, it's just bizarre and disconnected from reality of most Americans.

The Republican's appear to view health care for Americans (and by extension our quality of life and even life itself) in the same manner they view the lives of innocent Iraqis; non-combatant's are expendable; collateral damage; I'm safe, who cares about anyone else?; if they didn't deserve to die, they wouldn't; if God had intended humans to fly, we would have wings; the world is flat, just look it's a self evident truth; Elvis Presley lives in West Lake Park; the Iraqis like to have their friends and family blown to pieces, it's their way of life.

    • I'm not sure I agree completely with President Obama. I do think he is headed in the right direction, but I heard him speak earlier today and he is moving toward forced health care. People will be forced to add 'health insurance' to their already overburdened budget. They will fine people who do not carry health care. That's just sad.

It won't be a strain on people who can already afford health care, it will be a strain on people who are already stuggling to survive. Enough is enough!

People are unable to find jobs, let alone adding forced insurance onto their backs. Create jobs! Don't add burden before jobs, that's just crazy!

Start clinics across America and give people alternative places to go for reasonable health care. If we can afford to bail out auto companies, we can afford to set up clinics. There are a lot of doctors in America who still owe student loans. Aid them with their student loans, by letting them work it off in neighborhood clinics.

    • The Republican argument is : "No, we don't want "socialist" medicine, we'd rather the current kind-hearted insurance companies run health care."

The stupidity of this argument would be stunning until you realize it's coming from Republicans who have got to be some of the dumbest people on the planet.

They voted for that traitorous piece of garbage of George Bush then played their banjos while the country went into meltdown.

Then to boot, how stupid do you have to be to be "re-invigorated" by Sarah Palin .. ? Seriously ??

The only people left as Republicans are racists, (kkk, skin heads, nazis, etc), or idiots. Hence their stupid argument.

    • The ABC News President with integrity. This is the funniest thing I've seen today. ABC is so in bed with the Obamabots they have difficulty seeing reality. There is no fairness or objectivity in the alphabet networks.

As it stands now, the ABC in the White HOuse piece is nothing more than a puff piece for Obamunism. ABC has denied ads that do not support their, or the fascist leaders, policy, no members of the opposing party are welcome. No matter how you spin this one you can't get escape what is before your eyes. It is indicative of the hubris in this administration and it's water carriers that this is even happening.

    • Wait, so a company is making its own decision and will either benefit and suffer the consequences in the market...and the Republican's are having an issue w/ this????

So now the Republicans are both favoring censorship and abandoning the free market???

Seriously...who the fuc. votes for these...not even sure I have a term that fits

If it isn't a majority control its not really control.

I cant' recall the president but one of our former leaders once said "Oh to be a dictator for a day." or something a long those lines. Having control of senate of house without majority or near majority control is pretty much just for show.

Oh what a riot. Lach warning about looking foolish. Reminds me of an idiot I once ran across in Dallas. Goes the wrong way down a one way street, then has to stop when he runs into traffic. One would think he'd figure it out but no, not this fine republican. He proceeds to get out of his car to explain to us how it is US who's going the wrong way. When the truck driver next to me said to him that he was the one traveling on the wrong direction, he said, "you're obviously trying to start a fight and are acting foolish." As he had blocked the road, traffic was backing up behind us and FINALLY you could see realization on his face.

    • These repugnants are not going to get till they get at the voting booth. Continuing to slide out the doors of congress and a generation away from ever getting the presidency.
