22-year-old Riam Dean was born with her left forearm missing and has a prosthetic arm. She was initially given permission to wear a cardigan at the store but, later, was told it was against A&F's strict dress code.
Miss Dean said, "If I did go outside the family home. I felt so self-conscious, I would cover up and wear long cardigans despite it being summer. I knew I would need another job, but I couldn't face rejection all over again. I began to assume that my arm would always cause me such trouble. I was always prepared for children to be curious about my disability, but to be faced with adult bullying, no-one could have prepared me for such debasement."
Abercrombie & Fitch has yet to respond to the allegations.

I am a grad student doing a Public Dissemination Project on Societal Constructs and individuals with disabilities. I just concluded a discussion on the ignorance and stupidity of adults and their views on people with disabilities. How sad for this young woman to have to deal with such discrimination! I will never shop at A & F again. I will use this in my project. You would think that in this day and age corporations are past such stupidity.

I hate everything this stupid clothing company and it's numerous branches stand for. Exclusivity, sexism, racism, misogyny among other things. She is really pretty and a law student too that is awesome :) she is way too good for abercrombie. I am glad that she is suing these bastards. Riam if you read this or see this on current i just want to tell you that you are beautiful and you are standing up for what is right.

I don't think this should be an attack on A & F because I'm sure any retail store as huge as A & F would do the exact same thing. I'm not saying that it was right - it's completely unacceptable - but, I'm pretty sure Bloomingdale's or Urban Outfitters would do the exact same thing to an employee with a disability.
It's all about that $$$$$$, folks. Sad but true. I hope she gets a huge settlement out of this, though.

I used to work at A&F’s sister store Hollister. They make you dress a certain way because they use their employees to advertise their clothing.

this is not the first time! i watched a video in college last year about a&f doing this to minorities... they would only allow minority workers to work in the back, away from view of the customers... some got fired because they weren't 'pretty' enough.. stuff like that. and im pretty sure that the video was made in the 90s! this makes sense that they would treat someone missing an arm the same way.. that doesn't exactly fit into their barely legal catalogue shoots does it? stupid abercrombie. their clothes suck anyway...

What about the Americans with Disabilities Act? I'm very certain that this was violated when they couldn't make accomodations for her...it's only sleeves for heaven's sake! Anyway, I don't like A&F and their discriminatory attitudes and I hope they get what's coming to them...

I doubt the Americans with Disabilities Act applied to this lady as she's British and the A&F branch in question is in London, ENGLAND!
Other than that I agree! :D

Actually, companies are required by law to make reasonable accomodations to workers with disabilities. I don't think anyone here could say that allowing the woman to wear a cardigan is an unreasonable compromise.
The following attitude: "this is dumb. if the dress code says you can't wear sleeves on the sales floor, then you can't. end of story." is quite the slippery slope.
Using that logic, one could argue that a dress code requiring everyone to wear pants with a 26" waist is acceptable and if one does not meet such criteria, then they are subject to dismissal. Both situations are beyond the control of the individual.

While I really wouldn't find that waist size thing morally acceptable, if a store has a policy they wish to enforce, they are legally able to enforce it. It's the company's prerogative to set policies like that, regardless of ethical or moral ramifications.
However, I seriously doubt any place that forces workers to wear a certain waist size is going to get good business.
Obviously, there are laws in place to protect people for being fired for their age, gender, orientation, belief, etc., but I really don't think dress code is one of them. Her disability, while quite real, was not necessarily debilitating in regard to what she had to do. That's part of what makes this case difficult to pin down.
I had no idea that companies are required by law to make reasonable accommodations. If that's the case, then yes, wearing a sweater should be no big deal... as long as it's an A+F sweater. If I remember right, you have to wear A+F clothes when working there. That may be another part of the problem.

@jskinne2 and @JosephJinx - It would appear that she was given permission to wear the cardigan at first and then A&F changed their minds.
I think until the full outcome of this we won't know for sure what she did or didn't go through at the store.

I agree with jskinne. While I hate A+F and the insanely materialistic, slave-labor-wearing demographics they cater to, if the store's policy has a dress code and she breaks it, they can legally let her go. This isn't an equal rights issue, as she could operate just fine without her sweater. It's her psychological issue of dealing with having a prosthetic arm and not being the same as everyone else.
I'm sure that working at A+F isn't helping that. However, it's not the store's fault she cannot deal with her self-confidence issues.I hope she can find a job that is a little more open to her needs, but A+F doesn't have to oblige, even if they should.

it's the stores rules, and if she doesn't like the rules, then she shouldn't work at the store. end of story. - 2 years ago

I agree, good for her! A&F have for years made a fortune on tailoring clothes for a specific demographic and actively ignoring or demeaning everyone who doesn't fit into it. I hope she takes them for all they're worth. Not only for moral reasons, but then they'll also stop making hideous and boring clothes with their own name blasted across them.
