Neocons are Ahmadinejad's useful idiots

"A friend once told me that I was the only person he knew who was both 100 percent American and 100 percent Iranian," writes Hooman Majd in his book on Iranian culture, "The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran."
The consummate insider and outsider, Majd served as the English-language translator for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's now infamous 2006 speech at the United Nations, and also wrote about the experience for the New York Observer.
The son of an Iranian diplomat under the shah, and grandson of a powerful ayatollah, Majd grew up mainly in the United States where he worked for many years in the entertainment industry before launching his career as a journalist and author. Although openly linked with the reformists -- he wore green Iranian slippers on Bill Maher's program last week and has also translated for former President Mohammed Khatami (to whom he is related by marriage) -- Majd's views on Iran are distinguished by their nuance and fierce independence. Indeed, in his status as a sophisticated global citizen and Iranian American sympathetic to the core ideals of the Islamic Republic, he embodies the paradox of contemporary Iran that is the subject of his book.
Majd was in Iran in April for a recent Newsweek cover story about his journey from his ancestral home of Yazd through the Iranian heartland to the sprawling capital city of Tehran. He returned again in May during the run-up to the elections and has since been in daily contact with friends and family about the crisis in the country from his home in New York City.
Salon spoke to Majd (who has been a regular contributor to these pages) by phone about whether or not the Ahmadinejad victory was rigged (yes), what reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi really wants (Islamic democracy), and why the neocons are Ahmadinejad's best friend.
How are you getting most of your news? From family? Are you following Twitter?
I'm not following Twitter so much. I get reports from people I trust and the media to the extent they are covering it. The rest is all from family and friends in Tehran. They tell me what they feel and what they know, as much as they can. People have to be careful with phones given since many phones are tapped now. I speak to Tehran at least once a day.

The US acts likes a drama queen when "democracy" is not played out exactly as it wants to.
And there's no bigger hypocrysy than the US saying it wants democracy in Iran when it was the US who took it away for 26 f---ing years after it put the Shah of Iran in power from 1953 to 1979, when the Shah's Savak secret agents end up torturing and killing over 100,000 Iranians.
Not one f---ing word from the US about democracy and human rights in Iran during all those years.
And to make it even more of a hypocryte the US is a solid ally of Saudi Arabia where democracy is completely nonexistant, and is the only country in the world named after a family.
In other words, one of the best allies the US has in the Middle East is run by a f---ing mafia.
It's a shame that so many here share in that kind of hypocrysy with the Powers That Be in the US, like the brainless lemmings they are. - 2 years ago

Hmmmm. Maybe I am just not catching the right articles, but I am a little skeptical of the message coming from some on this thread that Iran is currently in the throes of the next French Revolution. From what I can tell, they are mostly pissed because they think the candidate they supported got jacked at the polls. That is a LONG was from "let freedom ring." Moudavi was a key figure in the Islamic Revolution that brought this governmental system into power. He has NEVER been a big fan of America. Further, I think that most Iranians take a great deal of national PRIDE in their ability to thumb their noses at the U.S. on their nuclear development efforts.
I can't stand Ahmadinejad, and I am sympathetic to ANYONE who is the victim of a stolen election. But I wonder if we might want to back a couple of steps away from assuming that the motives of everyone in the Mousavi camp are as pure as the driven snow. I KNOW he has no interest whatsoever in establishing an American-style republic or anything approaching our Bill of Rights as the law of the land.
Obama has done a tremendous job of playing the hand he was dealt. He was never "too quiet" or "insufficiently active." The protesters are NOT FREEDOM FIGHTERS, for heaven's sake!

I like the article a lot, but the title doesn't seem to have anything to do with the text below it.
Speaking of the article though, that sounds like a really interesting book. I wonder why, with his views, he is asked to translate for these people, and why he agrees to do it. It seem like a contradiction, although on the other hand, it is a great opportunity to get news, and to understand the opposition.

I think if you took a pole of the Iranian People right now, weather we should look the other way and mind our own Busness, as you say. they would give the Free world the thums up to giving them a Hand Up and not a Hand Out! In other words the Unelected Government of Iran has had a efective policy of Gun Control for many years that seems to be working out for them right now! As you can see the Government is the only ones with the Guns! They need Help. They Need Arms, this is not a fair fight. If you think the ones with the Guns are giong to Just go away, that is not going to happen. And if you think the Protesters in the street who are calling for Death to the Dictator after what the Leadership has done well that aint going to happen eather, and we saw what the responce to Obama calling for no more violence, along with the rest of the Free World has done. the least we could do is figure out what are the options short of all out War. Give them a Fighting chance! All they want is Freedom. Hell the french came to our side once and we repaid the favor.

I am deciding weather Obama's responce falls under the old saying: "A day late and a Dollar short" Or "Better late than never" The words he said were like reading my mind or my blog post's or hundreds of thousands of Blog post's just like mine. Or maybe it was Neda who got to him and woke him up! He mentiond her twice. in his news Confrence. He was asked weather he recived a lot of pressure from John McCain and others he replied with a smile. "What do you think" Reglardless of what woke him up I hope he stays awake. When the leaders of the world want to start to act like Hitlers or little Hitlers the best thing they could here from America is Scilence. It does not matter weather you are Republican or Democrat nobody wants to see American Blood spilled to Stop a Hitler. witch is why the last time the Real Hitler commited the Murdering of innocent got to continue for so long. There was a Lesson to be learned from that war and our sitting on our hands for so long. The invention of the internet this time will open our eyes to all the killing of the Nedas much sooner than before. The World now can see that the brutal un elected Government of Iran is a Hitler. it is inevitable he will be taken out. How long we wait is the Question. The soonen we act the less Nedas have to Die. We all hate to be forced to be the Police of the World. We all agree that is the case. President Clinton used US forces to go in to Bosniea to Stop the Murdering of Thousands of Muslams and no one refers to that as Meddeling. President Obama must do the same....It is time to lead Mr. President
