Oregon is 6th state in 2009 to legalize hemp cultivation

Oregon’s House of Representatives voted Monday night to legalize the cultivation of hemp, becoming the sixth state to do so just this year.

Oregon’s Senate voted 27 to 2 in favor of the new law last week. Monday’s 46 to 11 House vote means that the measure will become law, barring an unlikely veto by Governor Ted Kulongoski.

The move is part of a rapidly growing nationwide trend to liberalize laws relating to marijuana. Hemp is a botanical cousin of marijuana, traditionally used to make clothing, rope and other durable fiber goods.

“Hemp is a versatile, environmentally-friendly crop that has not been grown in the U.S. for over fifty years because of a misguided and politicized interpretation of the nation’s drug laws by the Drug Enforcement Administration,” Vote Hemp President Eric Steenstra said in a statement.

“While a new bill in Congress, HR 1866, is a welcome step, the hemp industry is hopeful that President Obama’s administration will recognize hemp’s myriad benefits to farmers, businesses and the environment.”

    • Well, good question, but usually whenever someone feels a need to bolster their claims by tacking on "unparalleled in nature" it's a sales pitch or they have an agenda. I seriously doubt a plate of hemp seeds has more protein than a plate of western steer.

      Just a guess.

    • 'Omega 3, 6, 9, and lots of protein...' Hemp is regarded as a superior replacement for (dwindling and contaminated) fish oils. Hemp seeds ideal balance of omega oils, amino acids, essential fats and protein is unparalleled in nature...

Crap in Oregon?! That sounds like something off of Hee Haw BR-531. Florida now has its own unique set of problems because of all the underground springs. That means a lot of your "ground" is already WATER, so when the oceans rise just a bit more you all are gonna need more boats.

Sandy soil is the least of your problems.

    • In the present climate where people are scraping the walls with their fingernails to get away from God -and anything natural that reminds of God- hemp doesn't have a chance to go into wide acceptance. If they're allowing it now it's only for a time, a tease, til SCIENTISTS make something MAN-MADE THEY CAN BRAG ABOUT.

Then all hemp farms will be razed and outlawed all over again. Along with any potheads "accidentally" caught inside the borders. They'll just say they were the lost followers of David Koresh and everyone will applaud.

    • Hemp is very Eco friendly. I've heard of a building material 6x stronger then concrete made out of hemp and sawdust.

Not true WakeUp. Human fat is the highest quality btu fat in the world. You could feed the people the food they need FIRST then set up clinics to do fat and excess skin reduction surgery, harvest the fat and make ethanol, or just plain biodiesel.

Tell ya something else too. You could probably grow the fat after harvesting it off people. You might also like to know that waistline fat generates STEM CELLS that keep the heart muscle repaired.

The people who know these things want us "picking ourselves up by our own bootstraps" to lose it through starvation so they can dish out suffering to fat people and teach the fat slobs a morals lesson.

I've been smokin it for about 12 years now and just got my BS in Engineering. 3.6GPA

      My pot-smoking uncle is a world-traveling microbiologist....

I guarantee you we both have a higher IQ than someone like yourself who makes completely ignorant and irrational statements like that. There will always be stupid people out there, don't be so quick to assume cannabis had anything to do with it.

      What's your excuse?

and I discovered a cure for cancer and I am working on perfecting time travel..see how easy i did that..

so what else did you guys do?? studied molecular vibrations while high on ganja?? climb the himalayas while stoned?? let me add..make a person pretty creative when you smoke weed long enough..

weed makes a person make questionable decisions and make really risky judgments..and (looking at you)...very agitated....and defensive..

Simple don't give GnL the time of day. All of his responses are the same and getting old. He just has to belittle everyone to make himself feel better. Kinda like Clownpuncher only not as funny. He doesn't understand much outside the little box he has created called his sad pathetic life.

Not so... the hemp would pollinate the crap out of it and all you'd get is seedy crap!

AND the seeds would be worthless since they were crossed with hemp and would produce poor quality bud if grown.

    • New things happen the further away from Virginia you get. Pity the poor fools that listen to their siren's song and come here. Land of Communists where doctors and dentists collaber together and set same prices for all services. Pity me for wasting my LIFE here but, that's about to get corrected shortly. Politicians owned by lobbyists. Tobacco-poisoned children can't press a lawsuit against Big Tobacco (so they never have to have a new industry). What's the topic again? I got lost in 1850 slavery laws now equally applied to Whites.
