Russia stages war games near Georgia

Russia has launched a massive military exercise in the Caucasus.

Georgia has called the war games, which involve 8,500 troops, 200 tanks, 450 armored vehicles and 250 pieces of artillery, a "pure provocation." Led by Russia's top military commander, Gen. Nikolai Makarov, they are due to last until July 6, the day U.S. President Barack Obama arrives in Moscow for talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Apart from ground troops, border units, the air force and the navy are taking part in the exercise, which will span across southern and southwestern Russia. It's the biggest military operation since last year's war with Georgia over the breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

    • Russia is proving that communism CAN come back from the dead- their move to democracy was just a sham- the communists are pulling all the strings. With all this saber rattling, it's obvious they want Georgia back, and this is just practicing for the real invasion.

    • Man, Georgia is even more boring and useless than North Korea. Let them have it. Oil pipe lines, more mountains, for whatever reason they like it so just give it to them. It's not like Georgia is ever gonna come running to the US and be all "Hey, super cool news guys, we found cure for AIDS/global warming/anything!"

    • With President Obama visiting with President Medvyedev, Medvydev will ensure Obama that they are conducting such war games that will prepare them to invade Georgia (flashback Chamberlain allowing Hitler to invade Poland) in hopes of preventing Israel from attacking Iran by flying through Georgian airspace.
