Britain is only halfway up the Happy Planet Index (HPI), calculated by the New Economics Foundation (NEF), in 74th place of 143 nations surveyed. The United States features in the 114th slot in the table. The top 10 is dominated by countries from Latin America, while African countries bulk out the bottom of the table.
The HPI measures how much of the Earth's resources nations use and how long and happy a life their citizens enjoy as a result. First calculated in 2006, the second edition adds data on almost all the world's countries and now covers 99% of the world's population.

Pura Vida!
"Costa Ricans use the phrase to express something akin to a philosophy of strong community, perseverance, resilience in overcoming difficulties with good spirits, and enjoying life slowly and celebrating good fortune of magnitudes small and large alike." Wikipedia
Universal Healthcare, No army, 90% literacy rate, tropical rain forests, strong economy, extraordinary beaches, afternoon siestas, importance of family, and happy Ticos everywhere! I have experienced the pure life, and the United States should take some serious notes.

"Denica", this is typical monkey behavior. When playing golf in Kuala Lampoor(SP), the signs on the golf course advise you to lock up your cell phones and other valuables before leaving the cart. "Monkey see, monkey do"!

one of my sister's friends went to costa rica and she said that monkeys there throw poop @ people, steal things. i don't know how that contributes to a standard of living, but it's a cool fun fact. ;)

That's impossible. Everyone keeps telling us the US is the greatest country in the world. I guess it all depends on each country's values as to what makes it great. A clean environment and happy citizens are Costa Rica's values. What are America's values?

My friend living in Costa Rico recommends it very highly. Apparently a great place to retire.

I believe it. I'm committed to one more winter in Mexico and then it's Costa Rica for me. Way better surfing too! See you all there.
