Robert S. McNamara Dies

just that he's human.

I really am confused as to what that says about him.

During The Vietnam protests in spite of the fact he was the architect of the Vietnam war,he housed protesters in his DC home.One of which was his own child.

I think a more apropos comparison would be he and Rumsfeld, rather than he and Cheney...Cheney is a throwback to the days of manifest destiny, when the U.S. did as it wished and used it's military as a blunt instrument to bludgeon any dissent from within or from without...The days of yore that conservatives long for so desperately.

He's responsible for one of the worst era's in World history.

I'm a military brat. My friends lost a lot of family members, (Fathers,Sons & Brothers) in the Viet Nam War.There was always a lot of crying and silent tears back then. We never knew just who was going to get that knock on the door. My Dad sent my older brother to the Air Force Academy, just to avoid the draft. He had an eye injury there that cost him nearly 60% of his eye sight. They sent him then,home because he couldn't fly. Recently, 37 years later at 57,he just had another surgury to help save his remaining sight.

My Father came back an angry and emotionally disturbed alcoholic.Try coming home to someone like that as a teenager everyday.

I've often wondered if the people that are in the position to create a war actually had to suit up as the kings and their courts of ancient times did and actually help fight that war...would there be fewer wars, and the ones fought, would they end more quickly? My feeling is that the answer to both these questions is yes.
McNamara was just some aparachik in the whole military industrial complex...that is our real enemy..not an individuals' blundering decisions on their behalf.

he was a good secretary of defence, he had to make potent decisions during difficult times. I extend my greatest gratitude to him for evading a nuclear war during the Cuban missile crisis.

He was indeed the Cheney of his time but unlike the Cheney of our time he learned from his mistakes after at least admitting them. You have to reward intelligence even if it takes a minute to surface. If for no other reason than admitting military action in Vietnam was wrong and saying as much about Iraq he deserves respect posthumously - RIP.

Apoligies and regrets aside, making decisions that affect hundreds of thousands of lives should never be made with a slide rule.

I'm sad that he died, because he did some bad stuff, but he changed, and now, at the time he's died, he was a good person. See "The Fog of War".

Despite what he did, he really seemed to regret a lot of the bad stuff and have a real sincere desire for peace and progress in third world countries in the latter part of his life.
