Legal bills swayed Palin, official says

Ms. Palin announced on Friday that she would quit her job near the end of the month and turn the reins of state government over to Mr. Parnell, who like the governor is a Republican.
At the news conference, Ms. Palin cited numerous reasons for quitting, including more than $500,000 in legal fees that she and her husband, Todd, have incurred because of 15 ethics complaints filed against her during her two and a half years as governor. She said all of the complaints had been dismissed, but she still had to pay lawyers to defend her.
Mr. Parnell said Ms. Palin called him into her office on Wednesday night to tell him she was resigning.
“I think what I heard from the governor,” Mr. Parnell said on “Fox News Sunday,” “really had to do with the weight on her, the concern she had for the cost of all the ethics investigations and the like — the way that that weighed on her with respect to her inability to just move forward Alaska’s agenda on behalf of Alaskans in the current context of the environment. So that’s what I saw.”
Mr. Parnell, who is scheduled to take over for Ms. Palin on July 26, said it was costing the State of Alaska about $2 million just to pay for the staff to deal with the records requests from the ethics complaints.
“That was just over the top, and I think she used the word insane in her remarks,” Mr. Parnell said.
Ms. Palin, who was Senator John McCain’s running mate on last year’s Republican presidential ticket, is leaving office 18 months before the end of her first term as governor. In her comments on Friday, she acknowledged the toll that the ethics investigations had taken on her and her family.
But in the often-rambling announcement, Ms. Palin also sounded at one point as though she was quitting politics entirely and at another as though she had an eye on higher office, which immediately led to renewed speculation about the possibility of her running for president in 2012. She promised supporters that in the coming days, she would provide details — on her social networking Facebook and Twitter sites — on her reasons for leaving the governorship so abruptly.
In a posting on her Facebook page on Saturday, Ms. Palin appeared to indicate that she would seek a larger, national role — citing what she said was a “higher calling” to push for conservative causes nationally."

Ms. Palin made no sense in her announcement to quit...what a surprise. This woman has never made any sense. It made no sense for the republican party to have picked her as VP nominee. All they, apparently, looked at was a republican, female that they could groom. Too bad they didn't do a very good job at vetting her first. The woman has a degree in journalism. She's completely qualified to report on the opening of the new city park. Well, actually I've seen her sports report, she did that ok too. I'll put her up against the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review and lecturer of Constitutional law at Harvard...oh and first black President of the USA at any time.

There's a saying that should apply here because it always applies everywhere everytime: " People are like a teabag. You never realy know what they're made of until you put them in hot, hot water." Now that I've heard her reasons,( and her spin.)..And have also heard speculations on her being Indicted for embezzelment etc. on corruption charges as the killa of Wasilla..., I can safely say I don't realy know which to believe. But when the smoke clears, you can safely say that too much well earned, deserved controversy and too little intelligence & wisdom are a very bad brew to simmer for voters electing a President in 2012.
OR ANYTIME IN THIS NATION'S HISTORY !!! The USA is in such dire straights and deep shit now as it is.
We don't need any more Reagen/Bush bamboozelers
to push us into the abyss. What's more insane than
wasting $2.5 million greenbacks on the State level is
the criminal insanity of amping this wolf killer up to the national level when she has access to the nuclear codes. We used to have a saying back in the 1950s to
counter the happy horseshit used to dupe schoolkids
with the "duck and cover" malarchy. In the case of nuclear attack bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.
The people of Nagasaki & Hiroshima can tell you those 1945 mushroom clouds weren't the artwork out of Sara's magic toyshop mind, or cowboy McCain's mind either. The extremist selfishness of someone so
flagrantly inept as Palin still wanting to realize her childhood dream at the expense of everyone and everything else that matters should tell you straight up
she's a dangerous idiot that should be locked up. Who else has the gall to talk of energy independence
while the 500,000 citizens of Alaska ride Big Oil's gravy train with $3,200. payoffs each year ? I won't even buy another motor vehicle powered by a gas internal combustion engine. I'm waiting for the new electric cars like the BMW mini Cooper to come out this autumn, so that the ones that come out in Sept. 2010 will not be problematical. You can thank Obama for that. I'm also waiting for Mrs. " I hear voices of a higher calling " to openly claim she hears "God" talking to her and giving her instructions so that Palin can claim she's the new Joan of Arc leading a beseiged nation to victory. Because when that idiot claimed " It was God's will that the USA invade Iraq", (and not BIG OIL puppeteering mad King George Dubya ) she already
as much as admitted she's borderline scitzophrenic. - 2 years ago

When a woman is married her title is Mrs. Last I checked Palin is married. Nevertheless, she should have made this decision earlier. If you are wasting roughly $2.5 mllion of your own and your states tax money just to cover legal fees and employ others to handle it, maybe it's time to visit Vegas. You waste your own money with a chance of winning some back, everything is unethical and you get free drinks. I would say try porn but aparently there's already a Sarah Palin in the industry.

The 08 election campaign was exciting to a record number of voters for two reasons. One, the American Empire was and is at a critical turning point in history drawing out huge numbers of people who would normally sit at home ignorant of the national political scene. Second, because no matter what party won, for the first time in American history a non-white or non-male would be on the winning ticket. The point being, will Palin be able to draw out the huge crowds again or is the excitement all over? With the number of headlines Sarah Palin has on Current, which is a liberal site, I believe she will.

TopScruffy - You can say that the Republican party is of "crook status, greedy, and ignorant"
The Walstreet Journal a few days ago had an article in how in both 2006 and 2008 spending on "gov't trips" rose considerably even thought these trips included trips to Jamaica and the Caribbean with family. The American tax payer is paying for these overindulgent trips that which seems like stealing to me. - crook status
Just look at the Democratic party, could care less about what the people think about healthcare reform and cap-and-trade that will destroy and already battered economy. - ignorant

Thanks for acknowledging the points I made. I have no problem with criticisms of both parties I would just like to see that criticism spread to both the Republicans and Democrats. The media today is so biassed towards supporting one group (liberals at this time which is quite obvious). I would really like to see a change in the future of mass media and how, when and what it covers to a more conservative/moderate viewpoint, but that is only wishful thinking haha.

I thought that as a person she seemed like a sweet lady. But I'd sooner smash my nuts in a car door (which I'd really not want to do) than elect her to any very powerful point of office.
Likewise it has NOTHING to do with her being a woman, honestly if I could switch gender rolls this second I would. I am an awesome house husband and I do damn good with kids, likewise I have no problem taking orders from women (makes my life easier).
It had much to do with her extremely short sighted views on how things operate in this world. Had she at least expressed desires to educate herself I'd have given her the benefit of the doubt but more often than not she expressed nothing but blatant ignorance to the world around her and I found that unsettling.

Come on the only reason she has such high legal bills is because leftists and Democrats have been making false ethical claims. She has not once been found guilty of any ethical crimes, and that is after 18 accusations. EIGHTEEN!!!! I have great pity for Palin. I hate the inconsistencies of leftists. Back in the 1990's Clinton's kids where never touched. What about Gore's son? Now, we have a media that is attacking all of Palin's kids even the young diagnosed down-syndromed child, morally wrong!!!! Maybe she is leaving her post simply because she needs time to care for her children and family, and leave the unrelentless scrutiny of this biass media behind, that began almost the same day she was picked to be VP back in 2008.

I agree with your apt quote, but isn't that only 1/2 of
Winston Churchills' poli sci philosophy ? He also said:" Democracy IS the worst form of Government, after considering every other form of Government first " I haven't studied all of his quotations like I study Albert Einsteins' but I know enough about the man to know he was entirely pragmatic. At the finale of a Stargate Atlantis early season episode they quoted Churchill as having surprised his admirers by saying something seemingly uncharistic of him also. And in one episode of Babylon 5 Cmndr.Sheridan told a story, which was ostensibly true, that Churchill allowed the Luftwaffe to bomb Coventry, an entire community, to oblivion in his homeland rather than give up the strategic secret that Bletchley Park had cracked the Enigma code. If Churchill were alive today, doubtless he would have been a fan of Jay Leno who used to delight in interviewing people on the street to show how ignorant and uneducated the majority of those people were. And how ridiculous it would be to entrust Democracy & Liberty to the likes of them. But that's why Churchill was THE man for his time in England. The world was at war. If the majority of people knew how controversial Lincoln was, as my mom told me FDR was, they'd be astonished too. Complex people. - 2 years ago

I am surprise that anyone thinks her political career is over. Post Reagan, the Republican party has branded itself on two platforms, small government and conservative on social issues. Thanks to two terms of Bush II, the Republican party has turned into the antithesis of small government. That leaves social issues to rail on. Since this is an utterly vapid platform to run an entire party on, makes Palin the far and away perfect candidate. (Seriously, am I the only person seriously missing William F Buckley?). Her leaving office is perfect as it prevents her from having a record of screwing up or actually having a record at all...I guess she is using the "Senator" Obama method ...
I expect her to slaughter her opponents in the Republican primary as she will lock up the anti-intellectual vote along with with Jindal running a close second to form a power ticket. God forbid they actually win in the general election as I would be one of the many people sent to internment camps immediately for wearing glasses...

This is the most astute observation I've read yet. The idea that Palin's Neo Con puppetmasters didn't front her the big money to get her elected quid quo pro to serve their interests is a fairy tale. Only in Einstein's quantum parallel reality where Bruno isn't a fag could that occur.Their motto is like Ronald Reagan's attitude toward the Panama Canal: "We bought her, we paid for her, we ought to keep her". In for a penny, in for a pound. So they shell out half a million covering their bets on her. BFD. That's chump change to the realy Big Money. Big Oil runs Alaska through their puppet Sara Palin as Big Oil has run the USA for the past 150 years. Even while she was running with McCain last year Microsoft paid for her
plug to expand oil drilling in Alaska. Palin is as phony as a $3 bill. They made her a millionaire, so now (on the books anyway) she's a 1/2 millionaire. Fitting. She's only a half wit anyway. - 2 years ago

No matter what the reason, by leaving office half way into her first term as Gov., Palin has betrayed the people of Alaska who elected her to a four year term.
Palin has ruined any chance of further political office. Her resignation was political suicide.

Personally, I hate all the "liberals this," "conservatives that," "democrats are that," "republicans are this" bullshit we feed each other all the time. Fuck, we're all just people. But, as a Republican and as a Conservative, Palin is just an ignorant (insert derogatory word here) who makes an entire party lose even more credibility.
If she were to run, and we were to let her win and make her president, I'd say we deserve what's coming to us. Someone as close minded as this woman can only bring more pain and suffering to a people who have been oppressed through misrepresentation and lies. If she runs, and wins, I guess the world will finally be right. It will be proof that we are a Stupid people. Let's not let that happen eh?
On another note, she's a damn dumb bigot who deserves no one's respect or attention.
