Demand Accountability from Current!

Image
numinant
I urge everyone who is fed up with the inane editor's picks that are cluttering the front page to flag these stories and demand some accountability. Not only are many of them in poor taste and completely unedifying and irrelevant, but they're undermining the voting system Current has in place by making people feel as if their votes don't really matter. I personally find editor's picks very discouraging and frustrating, and I know others do as well. So I say we implement a new form of democracy at Current and flag the shit out the editor's picks until we receive satisfaction.

***EDIT: After further deliberation, I'm not sure that flagging is the best method of expressing dissent, although it does do one thing, which is annoy the staff and demand attention. But better is probably emailing Current directly at this address feedback@current.com and writing them a proper letter of complaint. And if you're comfortable sharing your letter with the rest of us, please post it here!***

    • I don't mind that current publishes everything, what I mind is that the inane and stupid gets promoted above really important items...and unfortunately, you can see this in a lot of the items current promotes about itself as well.

    • Incredulous:

relevance is in the eyes of the beholder man, what you may view as relevant maybe viewed as trite, extraneous, or inappurtenant by others. It is all part of the game of staying informed, it is just like only looking at things that you agree with, you get nothing from it... having a good sense of what others find as relevant should help you bring about what you feel to be relevant through an understanding of their thinking, comforts, and priorities.

    • Even worse, not only did the post died, but we also did not get a response from any of the staff....

Numinant, if the staff was ever going to suppress(stop) posts like these, then i am with you, I'll completely lose interest, and leave forever..

I wonder if the staff actually listens to some of our users' views, because it seems like they will only agree with their own interests...

    • I have spent so much time on debating Current's policies about news, features, Bots, censorship etc all wasted time.

This is what it all boils down to. When you run a 'User submitted material share site' you have a journalistic responsibility. You can not discriminate against content, nor should you push it ahead of other content. If that's what you want to do, take down the 'user submitted' and let the so called 'editors' do it. (most of those have probably never spent 1 day in school for journalism)
I have own several news organization sites and I see material everyday that I do not approve of, do not agree with or even find interesting, yet it has to be posted and distributed for those that DO want that information. Current has a long history of censorship, we all know about several issues that they just take down with no note to the contributor.
That is however their right, it's in the Terms of Service agreement we all agreed to when we signed up. So the bottom line is, they can do anything they want, you don't like it then there are numerous excellent share sites on the Web. Do a search and join those that will fit your needs. There are even sites that will pay you for your articles and opinions. Need help, email me.

    • You know what else would be nice? More transparency regarding article scores. Nobody is really sure how the scoring system works because it isn't apparent. We're just supposed to take for granted that the system is well-balanced, but many of us aren't finding that to be our experience.

Why not be explicit about what each article's score is, and how it arrived there? How many positive or negative votes did it receive? And as long as editor's are skewing scores, at least divulge how many points have been added. Right?

IMHO it would likely just increase abuse. I do wonder about it a lot though. There are whole series of posts with consistently and strangely high ratings. Maybe they tested their way into partial understanding. that kind of thing can be done.

voting still works. The picked stuff is in it's own little marked section at the top. I think it weeds out the special agenda based groups like the peacefreedomprosperity crowd who may use questionable techniques to drive their pieces up in the ratings system.

    • I agree with some of these comments... current was once a great site but lately I have been strongly debating closing my account. The only redeeming quality about Current at the moment is the Vanguard pieces, but those are few and far between these days.

I am posting this 9 hours later, but "res" posted a couple of articles about it, I believe. Yeah, it IS serious. I see China's leader (I don't know why I can't keep his name in my head..is it Hu Jintao or something like that?) had to abandon the G8 meeting in Italy and haul ass back to China in time to crush it under the heel of his boot.

Something like 200 dead and over 1000 more injured, with roving bands of Han Chinese trying to get at Uigar areas of the city.

And what the hell is Panzer doing with that thimble...hang on, let me get my magnifying glass. Holy shit, that's not a thimble, its a... Hmmm. Hang on, let me get my microscope...

    • So don't read them. As for why it's so high of course it is. Once upon a time cbs had a brilliant plan to breakthe Neilson ratings. They ran a story about neilson families during sweeps week. According to the Neilson ratings like half the country watched that show. It was crap of course, only the neilson families cared. Any article referring to people who read current is going to rank high. It doesn't mean people agree.

I for one generally like the editor's picks. It's just one section after all and they are specially marked.

So if anyone cares to share what they post when they flag editor selections, please do so.

Perhaps flagging the Twitterbot with your criticisms might be useful as well.

For the last time Obama is not an alien from another galaxy sent here to put our babies in soylent green farms.

Yes I get it...you don't like him...please god at least provide legitimate reasons.

The one today about the hundreds of hidden prisons hiding Americans that knew the truth made me laugh.

Ha, ha, ha...Crap. I missed that article. Now I have to go find it. Would that be located on the "Self-Righteous Indignation Channel" do you suppose?

Hundreds of secret prisons. Let me guess; they were underground prisons, right? No, better yet, they were INVISIBILE. Yeah...hundreds of invisible underground prisons. And all of the guards were zombie clones of former members of the Weather Underground...under the direction of the ghost of HP Lovecraft. Am I getting warmer? Now I know why those guys like this stuff; It's a GAS to make up. Yeah, OK, I'll stop wasting your time and go read it for myself...

In an attempt to curb repeating 'topic/location' posts.' or 'posted under wrong topic.'
It might take real staff to monitor... imagine

But that apparently , would be expecting Current to change with an eye toward censorship. .. not entirely an option in my opinion

    • Just wonder, why don't they ever ask about anything of which they change around here, they just appy it, without asking the people, the users of Current, of how they feel of this new change?

And yet, they still push on about it, ignoring the people's opinions about it....

Don't you guys ever pay attention? Twitterbot is a test. Step one in a much bigger plan. Their goal is to have your current account linked up to your Twitter (should you choose it). I don't like it either, but you guys need to stop seeing shadows everywhere.

    • Highr0ller:

Step one wasn't a failure. It was a test to see if their objective worked. And it did. The goal wasn't "make Current users happy" it was "can we get a bot to scour Twitter and find related comments, have it post it as a comment on the story, and create a web of interconnected community ties?" It worked, whether you like it or not.

Thanks for explaining what the Twitterbot was for. To tell you the truth I was confused as hell. Can you tell I don't use Twitter. lol

Truthfully, I could see Twitterbot useful for up to the minuet news, especially in areas of the world where communication is more restricted since Current is more of a 'cherry picker' from the users when it comes to content.

But it can be a little off kilter. You're in a discussion and suddenly twitterbot comes in from a user who doesn't contribute to the conversation, it's just filler.

@ScorpioGee: No problem. I was actually phenomenally pissed about Twitterbot at first also. I got a personal explanation, though, because curators got to chat with staff right after its release and we got the info right away.

I've just learned to ignore it for now, and I patiently await when it will be a completed project.

    • Not an overwhelming response so far.

I have no problem with the Editor's picks. They seem to be designed to stimulate discussion, without a strong left or right agenda. I also do not join lynch mobs for basic reasons of principle. Trying to organize a protest against a legitimate business strategy strikes me as fascist and childish. This site gives voice to all of our opinions, not to just the few that wish their's was the only voice heard.

Zoloft, Facism can be defined by what it opposes; individualism, rationalism, liberalism, conservatism, and communism. (Wiki).

Are you, Metal, and Numinant not attempting to support an effort to restrict current members choice to vote up or down topics that might appeal to adherents of the above mentioned policies? If not facism, what do you call it.

I'm not trying to attempt to restrict anything of sort...

This is protesting, we are protesting here, its to protest of the editor's picks, and the value of voting, and featured articles, and not to mention newsworthyness from the editor's themselves, because they aren't giving real news....of any category, and ask Numinant for the rest of the details, I only support this post because of so...

Well, first off, voicing your opinion is the complete opposite of fascism. If there would be fascism, then opposition would not be allowed.

Second, you threw out some big -isms there. Uh, how is this in opposition to any of them...now I'm even more confused about what you are trying to say about this statement

Third, that's too much of a liberal definition of fascism. It makes it a pointless and useless word. Anything opposing anything is fascism then...so then why even have the word.

Fourth, people here just like any excuse to protest throught the internet...let 'em have it...?

I'm sure the staff will come, at any point now, after they say "We're going to work on it", or "We are currently working on it",(No specific time date) with a added recommendation from Current89 on the staff's comment...

Afterward, this story is will be lost with all of the other discarded articles, because that is what usually happens to such protest articles like these...

No seriously, its really obvious that the staff does do the editor's picks, and chooses most of the featured picks, its very annoying, the twitterbot as well, as the non-newsworthyness of some articles, and please, not that sexist stuff!!
