US criticised over Babylon damage

The report says key structures were harmed and the site was subjected to "digging, cutting and levelling".
But UN cultural officials stress the damage did not begin when the Americans arrived, or end when they left.
The US says looting while Babylon was under their control would have been "worse" had they not been there at all.

Really, it‘s no secret that America is heartily disliked in that part of the world–one reason he picks where he‘s going to show up there pretty carefully, I‘m sure. (It helps that Egypt gets more foreign aid than anybody else in the region, except, of course, for one itty-bitty place with a really bad rep in the hood.)

Nice find, ras! It seems like Iraq will be struggling for years to regain artifacts and repair damage done. I wonder how an issue like this falls in the priority list of the Iraqi government - surely they have a lot to deal with. Is there a role NGOs could play? Maybe a trusteeship?
