The Obama administration said yesterday that it has billions of dollars available to help pay for a national H1N1 flu vaccine program that could be ready starting in mid-October.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius made the announcement at an all-day summit on the outbreak of what is more commonly known as swine flu. One purpose of the gathering, officials have said, is to help restore a sense of urgency to the worldwide response to the epidemic.

    • If it wasn't set to make Baxter billions of dollars (and the pharmie led lobby which in turn gives billions to our lovely leaders like Pelosi, Reid, Imhoff and the like), they wouldn't be crying wolf over a non-existent pandemic.

      The WHO recently moved it to Pandemic status. They moved it to a Stage 6 which in legal terms allows the United States government to use the Martial Law emergency codicil to make injections MANDATORY.

    • Responsible doctors inform their patients of the allergens present in vaccines. Responsible patients read the vaccine information sheet available online and from the doctor.

      Polysorbate 80 is in many foods, including ice cream, because it is an emulsifier. There are no data showing that it is carcinogenic at the levels present in vaccines. If you have ever accidentally swallowed dish soap or shampoo while blowing bubbles, you have already put more emulsifier in your body than a vaccine and I'm sure you are OK.

      Sodium phosphate is a vague term used for sodium and phosphate salts. It is in everything from soup to baked goods to cheeses and meats, at much higher levels than in vaccines.

      The above can be said for everything you listed. There is nothing wrong with pointing out potentially harmful ingredients. We should always question what we put into our bodies and demand the best. What is wrong and irresponsible is to lead people to believe that something is carcinogenic when it is only carcinogenic at concentrations well beyond those in the food or vaccine or product that you are trying to discredit. There are things called dose-response curves and such that should be payed attention to if you are going to tout strong opinions as facts.

      Also, please let's try to not go so far in one direction to prove a point that we don't evaluate data in the other direction. Any U.S.-designed vaccine will have to meet purification standards and will have to be tested in the appropriate amount of animals (I can hear the collective body of conspiracy theorists who have never even been to the FDA gasp). Distributing to the public in the U.S. is not the same as distributing experimental vaccines to study subjects in a research project with informed consent or to the homeless people in Poland, or to military men and women (I agree that it is appalling that we still use our military as a testing ground for new vaccines and drugs). Everything needs to be evaluated in context.

      It is not right to slam a product before it has been evaluated. If people are wary, they can request and read the information available on the vaccine, and if they can not get the information because it is not being made available, they can opt out.

      Every day, we get into cars, consume processed foods and beverages, coat ourselves with sunscreens and makeup, ingest bacteria and parasites, and expose ourselves to all sorts of natural and man-made environmental toxins. It's ironic that people will refuse a vaccine that has been safely used for years, such as the flu vaccine, but will let themselves become overweight and out of shape and down cokes, smoke, think that chips are a vegetable, and do all other sorts of things that have been proven to lead to disease and death. Think people.

      Actually, I agreed with iamfree on some points, but I said not to slam it without investigating it. Read the toxicity reports and the formulation and figure out if they have met your safety standards. Use data--not fear and paranoia.

      I don't follow blindly. I read the medical literature, meet with people in the FDA when I have concerns, and look at the product specs and adverse event reports. Many caring, hardworking, and brilliant scientists work on vaccines--it's not just the government evil doers and profiteers. Don't forget that. If you have never worked with or met a scientist who works on such things, maybe you should to get a broader perspective.

      Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

    • well, nephwrack, it has killed pregnant women and their unborn children in the US and abroad. As much as Darwin favors the strong--you need babies to keep the species going.

      In Mexico, it targeted those between the ages of 20 and 40, many of them healthy, and recent studies are showing a trend in other regions of the world. Thus, it appears that this flu is similar to some other pandemics but different than the seasonal flu. And, the point of vaccination is to create 'herd immunity' so people who are carriers and only mildly affected don't walk around town spreading it to people who may be greatly affected if they contract the virus.

      We should not becoming paranoid, but we should understand the dangers, especially if the virus mutates, and we should be responsible members of society by not spreading our fluids all around town because we are too lazy to wash and cough into our shirt sleeves and by getting vaccinated once an appropriate vaccine has been formulated.

      You bet. Neither I nor anyone that I know personally has ever experienced an adverse event following a vaccine. There is not one study showing that our current vaccines have any ill-effects, regardless of what conspiracy theorists who can't read medical literature claim, and it would be highly unlikely that the swine flu formulation/production process would deviate from the current vaccine strategies so there is no reason to suspect it will be any different. I work with patients and have a child and I have a responsibility to not spread a potentially life-threatening disease to them. I proudly get vaccinated for the regular flu for these reasons so why would I not get vaccinated for the swine flu? That would be irrational behavior.

      i am very insulted that people would rather have people suffer and die from vaccine preventable diseases that have the chance that a disproven theory may be true and their child possibly somehow "catch" autism -- the kids don't suffer if they are treated well but many parents suffer SO much from disappointment that their kids cannot fulfill their fantasy idea of a child of theirs -- i know i have an autism spectrum disorder and was considered the black sheep of the family and society until they knew i had Asperger's-- i dont want thousands to die just because people do not want to live around people like me
      FYI: the reason why the H1N1 vaccine is ready is because as soon as it was discovered they started making the vaccine -- just in case it turned out to be more deadly -- outbreaks in the flu season in Australia have now shown it will not be severe for mot people but every flu season people complain that the flu vaccine is not more widely available or that it does not prevent the current form of the flu -- the CDC cant win they are damned if they do and damned if they don't--BTW a pandemic does not mean that it is deadly it only means that it is common worldwide

      1 OLD. >60 >(greater than for republicans)

      2. YOUNG < 5 (that's less than for libertarians)

      3. Immune system comprimised.

      because i havent heard of anyone dying of it other than those 3 categories, and those same ppl have an equal or greater chance of dying of ANY OTHER VIRUS!

      I do notice a lot of content from these two on the front page, and i do think it is showing of a flaw in the system, but if I'm not interested i simply move on and ignore it.

    • Epidemic? When does a disease classify as an epidemic? I'm asking this because I thought that the number of victims of the H1N1 virus were miniscule.

      While the terms themselves are all rather loosely defined, an Epidemic is a general infection, whereas a Pandemic (which is what H1N1 is) it an infection global in nature.

      It is important to know that these terms are often based upon the level of infection. The common cold, which has a very low rate of mortality but is very common would not be an epidemic, whereas a handful of cases of a rare disease in close proximity would be.

      I sourced this data from wikipedia, but the day H1N1 was classified pandemic, the WHO released a document stating essentially the same.
