Zoo May Close, Euthanize Animals

The Franklin Park Zoo, the only Boston institution of its kind, may be forced to close and euthanize some of its animals, zoo officials said Friday.

Without more state funding, zoo officials said that they will run out of money within months and have to close both Franklin Park and the Stone Zoo in Stoneham.

The zoos would be forced to lay off most of their 165 employees and attempt to find new homes for more than 1,000 animals.

Zoo officials estimated 20 percent of the animals would not find homes and could be euthanized.

“Not all the animals in the collection will be able to be placed at other facilities,” John Linehan, zoo president, wrote in a letter to the Massachusetts Legislature. “The Commonwealth would then be forced to either continue to maintain the animals in the closed facilities or euthanize them.”

The Legislature had originally provided $6.5 million to the zoos, but Gov. Deval Patrick cut the state funding to $2.5 million.

“These are extremely difficult times across the state, and there have been tough cuts in every area,” a Patrick spokeswoman, Cyndi Roy, said in a statement. “This is an example of an unfortunate cut that had to be made in order to preserve core services for families struggling during the economic downturn.”

The Franklin Park Zoo was founded in 1913. It is funded by state money, private donations and revenue from the attractions.

    • It is interesting to me to watch the responses to this news. Even with the sarcasm displayed, it is a bit surprising to see how many people are "cold" and self-serving. These animals cannot be sent back to the wild. First, there are laws prohibiting the re-introduction of animals due to the concern of new diseases being introduced to the wild herds. Secondly, if they could be released back to the wild, they probably would not survive. Have we become so selfish and materialistic that we have no empathy for other species except ourselves?

    • This is terrible! Our economic shit hole we're in should not effect animals in captivity. Send them to different zoos or to wildlife sanctuaries. It always horrifies me how shit like this happens to animals.

    • Makes sense to me. Lord knows that there is no evidence at all that animals have even marginal chances in the wild given the natural underlying instincts that they are genetically predisposed to have.

There has never been a case of an animal ever living in captivity making it out in the wild. At all. There is a much higher success rate with just euthanizing them. Lord knows it sure results in less waste.

I like this policy, I'm all for using it across the board. Anytime any living thing has a small chance of succeeding we should just off the little bastard to make sure there is no iffy odds to think of.

    • Think of it this way. Logically an animal that is fed by keepers its whole life has not conception on how to hunt and kill its own food. To put a zoo kept animal back into the wild is suicide. Might as well shoot it first. There are organizations that take "wild" animals, all over the U.S., which is a good thing and maybe it will be good for these animals too.

    • Yes send these animals back to their habitat and out law Zoos henceforth. Why bring animal here when the state and local politicians caint manage a budget. Thats why California is broken. There is too much government welfare and waste or to put it another way get rid of the Pork in government and start paying off the debt and stop spending until there is enough to support the peoples projects. Get out of the art of spending and learn something about economics. Heelp get rid also of the Federal Reserve Bank and return to a national banking system.
