Brixton to have its own currency

Image
AnnieMole
In September, Brixton in South West London will be launching their own currency, making them the first area in London & the first urban area in the UK to have their own pound note. Totness in Devon & Lewes in Sussex have already launched their own currencies.

It's an effort to boost the local economy & local shops as money will only stay in the area. They're currently taking nominations as to which famous Brixton people should be pictured on the notes. In the frame so far are Harold Macmillan, David Bowie, The Clash, Sharon Osbourne & Eddy Grant.

So if you want to see Ziggy Stardust or Sharon Osbourne replace the Queen's head on currency you know where to go!

Wonder how many other places in the UK will do this and what it might lead to?

    • This is a great idea for brixton, suprised they got it through!
here's a better idea for more stable money, let the whole of britain print it's own money, and not loan it at interest from a seperate independant institution like the bank of england.

    • The Brixton Pound is a LOCAL incentive enabling and encouraging localised economic models rather than commercial chains which we rely so heavly on.

For every £1 spent in a local store 80p of that remains within the local economy for every £1 spent in a super maket only 18p remains.

The Briton Pound is also linked and invested with the local Credit Unions and so further helping localised economy rather than being a dividen to some Corporate interest fat cat.

The Brixton pound is a group initiated from the Transition Town movement which looks at Climate Change and Peak Oil and aims to create sustainable resilience within communities and economy.

Local community economy is important look how the Walmart style US mall culture has cratered our communities and high streets and how social spaces are being cloned with zero personallity.

Support local and support your community.

    • I wonder what the inflation rate will be. They are going to be worth less and less the farther away you get from th area and the fewer things they can be traded for. They are by definition already worth less than a regular pound because they are less useful. The question is how much. Only a moron would take them one for one in change.

    • Isn't The Clash a west London band? Van Gough lived in Brixton for a time, and John Major was born there.

As long as the 99p shops accept this, I'm in.

    • I read a while back that they were thinking about doing this. It's a great idea to support local businesses, as long as the locals actually join in and spend.
