A 42-year-old Louisiana man has died, apparently of a broken neck, after being pulled over by a police deputy.A dash cam video shows Deputy Chris Sturdivant of the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office with his arms around Adam Stogner’s neck after the officer suspected the man of putting a small quantity of drugs into his mouth.
Stogner died along Interstate 12. Preliminary results from the coroner show that Stogner died from “severe coronary artery disease, an enlarged heart, and a fracture of the hyoid bone in his neck.”
According to CBS affiliate WAFB, the sheriff’s office says Stogner did not put his truck in park when he was pulled over. This may have led the officer to believe Stogner was planning to flee the scene. And the deputy believed Stogner was impaired.
A substantial portion of the dash cam video can be seen here.
This video is from Fox News, broadcast July 13, 2009.

Its not like the drugs couldn't be identified by pumping his stomach later. This is about absolute control. A cop wants to be treated like they are a god and have all the right in the world to smite you if you don't follow their orders. This type of god complex has been allowed to go on for too long. Why should this guy have lost his life for swallowing his drugs?

This is sadly another example of the futility and systematic hostility involved in our government's War on Drugs.
This is the logical result of prison as a privately owned growth industry.
This is the democracy we are killing for in Iraq.
There is a solid chance that the drugs that guy was trying to hide came from Afghanistan.
There is also a solid chance that both the cop and the dead man were both really good guys.
I grieve for us all.

There are good cops and bad cops. The real problem is that they all cover each other asses. This puts us civilians on one side and them on the other. And as far as they are concerned, if they stop us, we are guilty, and they will do anything necessary to protect themselves and their jobs. I had a real bad experience with two overzealous Houston Policemen and they were forced to drop charges while their Supervisor took it on himself to make a personal apology, I suspect to avoid a lawsuit. It has made a difference in the way I feel about them.

I know i may seem "obvious" but did the forensic team or the Coroner determine that the officer was the one who broke his neck or was it broken previously? Also, how much of a role did the broken neck play this mans death.

I welcome you to check this out for me. Every fighter, cop, self defense expert, or martial artist, know two things. You can quickly kill a man by two ways; Drive the base of your palm into his nose and force the bone into his brain, thus inducing death. Or, crush the hypoid bone in the throat, inducing shock and death by suffocation. This is common knowledge among fighters, but rarely used due to the high chance of causing death. I have ended a number of fights by a punch to my opponents throat, but not using full force for fear of killing the man. This cop was well aware of the dangers of this hold. He was trying to impose his will on another man!

I notice that you have not commented on the effect of crushing the hypoid bone, which is what this dumbass cop did to this man? I just had another thought. Why ask a doctor about a method of death. I will bet that this poor man went straight to the morgue he did not need a doctor, as he was dead. The same thing would happen to any man killed by whatever reason. They go to the pathologist, not to a DOCTOR, who is clueless after a man is dead. I exactly explained the two ways to kill a man and cops know these very well!

You are making an assumption based on insufficient Data. If you think that the information received in this story is enough to convict a person of murder, I hope you are never allowed on a Jury. I am not defending this officer, I am ONLY saying you have a contempt of police officers which colors your perspective. That is what we call PREJUDICE, you are prejudging the facts of this case based on your loathing of all things police.
I know it is a Karate move, that's why I said it. But I am telling you what DOCTORS say on this issue. I take the word over a doctor more familiar with Human anatomy and likely causes of death over someone who writes for Karate Times.
Most doctor's will tell you a broken hyoid (not hyPoid bone as you keep calling it, causing me to wonder if, again you know what you are talking about) That yes in fact, people CAN in fact walk around, like normal never knowing the Hyoid is broken. A broken Hyoid in NO way is instantly fatal. So, once again...wrong answer.
ALSO you apparently did not read the entire COD the that the Coroner published....let me repost it for you so you can gain a clearer perspective. “severe coronary artery disease, an enlarged heart, and a fracture of the hyoid bone in his neck.”
So there were actually multiple factors contributing to his death.
Once again I will say, There is INSUFFICIENT data to convict this officer of murder. If you think otherwise I am not sure how much logic you are capable of mustering.

Run, if you want, but the truth will find you. Most 42 year old fat Americans show some sign of coronary disease. This started shortly after WW2; as noted by DOCTORS, treating Korean War casualities. The man was killed by a police officer, sworn to serve and protect. He failed in his duty and a man died because of it. All of the political cover up rhetoric in the world will not change this fact. The man is dead at the hands of a man sworn to uphold the laws of this nation. The first of which is," we are innocent until judged to be guilty". He killed an innocent man and I hope he serves a long prison term for it!

I did some research, Hammy, and you were correct about the hyoid bone break not always being fatal. There was a case of a professional wrestler being accidently struck in the throat, breaking the hyoid bone and surviving quite well.
i found quite a few police training papers regarding the use and misuse of choke hold tactics used by policemen. San Diego limited the "Carotid Restraint Control Hold" after 7 men died in custody since 1989. L.A.P.D. reports 16 men die between 1975 and 1982, as a result of a variety of choke holds being applied by "peace officers". It is interesting to note that no deaths since 1882 were recorded in Judo tournaments as a result choke holds (Shime Waza) being applied. 2006 a man was beaten and choked to death in Bakersfield while restrained and in custody. The autopsy reported broken facial bone, internal fractures, yet the cause of death was a "choke hold" applied by 3 officers, while the man was bound hand and foot.
Here is comment from the San Diego Asst. D.A. "as a general rule, in the case of unknown death, hyoid fractures are treated as homicide by strangulation unless proven otherwise. 33% of manual strangulation victims have a fractured hyoid. Next I checked out some autospy reports on "perp's" dying in custody. Every single autopsy report quoted, heart disease, drug use, hpertension, etc.etc. before finally reporting the likely cause of death was an bar arm, choke hold, or Carotid Restraint hold. However, the worst one was blaming a strangulation death on sickle cell anemia. Did you know that officers responding to a call are directed to treat strangulation attempts by "perps" as an attempted homicide or aggravated assault and to request paramedics immediately? These means that officers are using deadly force in situations that may not require deadly force. One other interesting note from a training paper. "Student Performance Evaluations should be kept if needed for future litigation". Next it explained that many subjects will panic upon having a choke hold applied, as a result of the "flight or fight" response triggered in the brain when being choked. Next are the take down techniques using an officers weight to injure the suspect, while shouting for the benefit of the camera,"get down, get down". This is to create an illusion that the suspect/victim was resisting. Watch "Cops" and you will frequently see a very large policeman kneeling on the head or neck of an unresisting man while 3 or 4 others put on the restraints. This is very common. - 3 years ago

Well... I just saw the whole video. To an inexpert eye like mine it looked a little brutal for a minor substance possession. I won't condemn the cop for "cold blooded murder" but even the uncertainty of the situation and the fact that he was alone doesnt justify punching him in the throat. Calling for back up probably would have been the better option.

I don't know anything about what happened in the time Fox edited out of the video. I believe I'm going to get a lot of angry shit about this, but, this is a cop, I'm inclined to believe that he knows what he is doing? If someone was "impaired" and refused to cooperate I like to think I wouldn't have handled it like that, but who knows what these police people face every day? I don't necessarily believe this cop is totally innocent, but it wasn't premeditated murder or anything. The guy already had an enlarged heart and severe coronary artery disease, and was in possesion of illegal drugs. Can you even imagine what the cop is feeling?
