Sotomayor: My 'Wise Latina' Comments Not So Different from Samuel Alito

Sahuaro
This is getting out of hand!

One comment in a speech is the only thing Republicans have against the most experienced judge to appear in front of the US Senate for Supreme Court Confirmation in three generations.

do you think she will get confirmed?

    • Supreme Court Judges are supposed to be picked based on their records of fair and balanced judgment in and outside of the courtroom...... Unfortunately it seems that gender and race are now superceding these standards...... Thank you for pointing out what I was implying cztheday...... This is a gross example of how politics have become completely liquidated and ones actions are meant only to procure votes rather than to act upon the constitutional standards our country is supposed to stand for.......

    • Yes, I had considered that. How wonderful that there are several good, qualified candidates. I'm glad Judge Sotomayor is first, but I would have been just as glad if another, equally qualified FEMALE candidate had been first.

I'm not gender prejudiced. I just don't like to see only ONE female on a court as important as the Supremes, especially when cases involve females. Seeing 8 or 9 men pass judgment in a case involving a female just doesn't look quite right to me.

    • Why did she go first? Think it through.

What is the primary goal of every first term President? A second term.

How does he get a second term? By locking up the future votes of as many critical constituencies as possible.

How many Supreme Court vacancies is Obama guaranteed to be able to fill, using his choice to lock up constituencies? One. The one he just filled with Soto. There is just no way to predict whether others will leave during Obama's first term. He has to make this one count toward the next election.

Where was Obama's electoral weakness and therefore his greatest vulnerability in the next election most apparent? In the South and intermountain West.

Where are the largest concentrations of hispanic voters? I think you can take it from here...

    • I have no idea. I'm sure there were several good candidates, but there was only ONE position open. Your guess as to why Judge Sotomayor went first is as good as mine.

    • bdtx, yes I brought up Leah Ward Sears, as she has a strong and consistant record in just and fair rulings.....

Why is she put on the back burner??

    • I don't believe Leah Ward Sears' name was mentioned in this discussion until you brought it up. I suspect Leah Ward Sears may be still in the running. Remember, we may have some more Supreme Court appointments while President Obama is still in office.

    • Calm, patient, obviously intelligent and knowledgeable, nervy, WISE! No wonder those old white guys are uneasy about having her on the Supreme Court. This old white lady says, "More power to you, Judge Sotomayor! Hang in there!"

    • Not one comment in a speech, but the same comment in six speeches over several years. But as usual a liberal gets the benefit of the doubt on current.

    • Very different:
Alito said that his experience as a minority made him accutely aware of discrimination.
Sotomayor said that by virtue of her gender and sex, she would make better judgements than "white males".

Her statement contained elements of racial and gender stereotyping and implied that white males are inferior in judgment.

Alito made no similar prejudicial or racially charged statement.

    • I love how they can't touch her on any subject.

She's simply so much smarter than the Republicans in the room that it's an unfair fight.

The bottom line: This is just another example of racism coming from the right in America. For shame.

Keep sticking it to them Judge Sotomayor!

    • mmm, would a wise latina say "Oh Yeah!, well he said it!"
      Cripes, whadda light weight.
Heaven help the poor souls coming before this dolt.

It is not one comment in a speech Republicans have against the most divisive judge to appear in front of the US Senate for Supreme Court Confirmation in three generations.

It is a demonstrated prejudice, if not racist, outlook on matters judicial. Worse, she is demonstrating she is not consistent and therefore unreliable for such a position.

      Flush .....

      Next!
