The basking shark that washed ashore on Long Island, New York, on Tuesday was 26 feet, 6 inches long.
The male basking shark, which weighed an estimated 5,000 pounds and was measured at 26 feet, 6 inches, died shortly after authorities arrived on the scene, according to marine educator Tracy Marcus of the Cornell Cooperative Extension.

kennymotown.... the first fish n n chips was not shark!! fish n chips were first fried here in my home town Oldham in 1860 ..42 miles from the coast.. cod, haddock and flounder are/were the fish used.

This is the 1st I've heard of a shark of any kind beaching itself. Whales any number of times, but never a shark. I wonder if this sort of thing has always happened, or has just started in the last number of years I've read of it?
I think they need to find out why, if that's possible. Sharks have to be moving through the water in order to breath - if they stay still they die. Obviously something was wrong or he wouldn't have been there.
Is there such a thing as an autopsy on a shark?
