Government survey says US teens need better Sex Ed

So, now even the CDC agrees that abstinence only sex ed programs haven't been very effective after all. On the upside, maybe this will help bring the changes needed in this very important form of education.

    • Nah, are youth are fine just the way they are. the pope says everything outside abstinence only education is evil. and since we are a christian nation we must follow our supreme leader. Facts be damned! If it's good enough for the bible it should be good enough for everybody. What has common sense and logic ever done for us?? Fuck condoms, fuck contraceptives, fuck education, fuck personal responsiblity. Because we all see how great it is to be sexually repressed your entire life. To be told that all that is natural and pleasurable is evil, immoral and wrong. After all those priests seemed to turn out fine...oh no wait...they raped little boys. Nevermind.

    • In Mexico, believe it or not, you rarely hear about or see teen pregnancies. I don't know about other countries. But maybe it's just the US and the lack of principles in kids and sex-ed that's not strong or graphic enough. One in two Hispanic girls get pregnant in the US. I think I know what's going wrong there.

    • Sex ed = less pregnancy or STDs.

Not a difficult concept people. Let's get over the fact that teens have sex and move on.

Nice idea if it was true. In reality, the more kids have sex, the more likely they are to get pregnant, and the more abortions and single mothers and wasted lives. Ilegitimate children with single mothers is an epidemic in our big cities.

I disagree with that idea. You see, I've grown up being taught that sex is ok but not a great idea because you're not ready until you KNOW you're ready. This has led many teens I grew up with to THINK about the consequences of sex.

If the only consequence of sex is that you tell teens it's bad, will they really care? My opinion: no. You cannot tell a teen that something is bad just 'cause their parents don't want them to and expect them to listen.

Give them a comprehensive look at WHY it's not a good choice.

OH, and by the way, parents are a huge contributing factor here. If a teen is the kind that listens to their parents, chances are they won't be having sex. This education helps keep the ones who DO have sex regardless of their parents wishes safe.

If you think that just telling them shut up and don't do it will stop them...I wish you luck! (granted, I doubt you'll say shut up - that was just for dramatic effect, lol).

    • Goddamn you people...It's a little thing called "Parenting." Hell, I'm staunchly Liberal, and I think "improving" sex ed will do nothing at all. Look at the divorce rate in America. Look at remarriage. If parents could take a few minutes to focus on their children, instead of their doomed social life, perhaps things would go a little better.

I do blame media, but not in the way most people do. The media- things like "desperate housewives" have people believing they can just put their kid in a corner, or in some expensive boarding school and nature will do the rest. Hah! You think kids are irresponsible and underdeveloped mentally? Boy, have you been had.

    • Yes, kids need better sex ed. We need to tell them that sex between two men is disordered behavior, and we should not encourage it it. We should not permit a RACIST organization like Planned Parenthood in schools to solicit for new customers. We need to realize their brain is not fully developed, and they are much more prone to engage in risky behavior. Not only is throwing condoms at them encouraging sex, it is also useless, as most kids who choose to engage in sex don't think too rationally. Blame MTV and the liberal media. (Why is everyone giving me the evil eye? Was it something I said?) :)

You, like soleil10, have an unnatural compulsion to this issue. And like her, you like to use words that you have no understanding whatsoever.

And blah blah blah. More bullshit. "OMG! THE LIBERAL MEDIA IS SSSOOOOOO EVIL!"

Does that make you feel better then? To have this weird delusion because you need something to assure yourself that I will always be wrong and you right? As always, the "I shall use insults to assure myself that you are wrong and hide my insecurities about my argument" tactic.

It's getting pretty pathetic. With no evidence, studies, or even a valid argument.

    • It's been proven over and over and over the abstinence programs are completely useless. It does not prevent pregnancies. It does not prevent STDs and STIs.

There's only one reason for abstinence programs and is to keep children asexual until they get married because "God ordained it."

    • I'm Canadian and I had sex ed from grade 5 to grade 12. out of the 600 people I graduated high school with from an inner city school I only heard one rumor of pregnancy. not only is there a huge stigma against girls who get pregnant and the boys they date, but there is also so much positive emphasis on how not to get pregnant! I can't believe that so much of the US still hasn't figured this one out yet.

I wonder the percentage of teens that were sexually active at your school. I went to a School in the heart of Texas where Sex Ed was taught once in the 9th grade for two weeks. It seemed every semester we had a new cheerleader squad as the last round was all knocked up. Neither me nor my friends were sexually active at the time, and we weren't COMPLETE rejects. Though I do feel a bit more like I was now that I write this.

Agreed pulikula, I've grown up in Canada as well... I can't believe that people are so scared of teaching teenagers that sex will happen, so the best thing is to cover up.

You just gave me another reason to like Canada- I always enjoyed spending a long day in Ontario, and found Canadians to be some of the nicest people I've ever met! Hats off to you hosers, eh!

Letci, well I know I was sexually active, and a reasonable percentage of my friends too. There were and still are people who are abstinent, but that is more a personal choice coming from them.

    • abstinence v.s. all the hormone induced fast food teenagers eat these days! do the math.
      stronger sex ed is needed!
they need scary facts not just imagining that those "feelings" will go away if you just save yourself till marriage.
