Why American drivers should learn to love the roundabout.

Why are Americans so suspicious of roundabouts? The simplest answer is that we have grown used to (and feel comfortable with) binary, on-off traffic control. We suspect such signals are more efficient than the "fuzzy logic" that seems to govern roundabouts. Roundabouts require drivers to make their own decisions and assess others' actions, rather than relying on third-party signals.

    • Roundabouts would be fantastic if people knew how to drive in them! Problem is, drivers tend to stop in the middle when they don't have to, or fail to stop or yield when they need to. It's a mess!

(Well, that and it's ridiculous to have a roundabout for three roads. Dupont Circle, now that's a serious traffic circle.)

    • I have plenty of roundabouts where I live and the only reason I hate them is because people never stop when they are supposed to!!! They just blow right through them because they assume everyone else will stop and wait for them. They would work perfectly if people would actually wait for their turn, but there are just too many a**holes out there.

    • I think roundabouts are nice. I have a friend who will go miles out of the way if it means avoiding a roundabout. I don't get it! They are so simple!

    • I find it amusing and sad that people will stop for an octagonal piece of metal ordering them to stop, when you can see a mile in each direction. Who is the boss, the sign?
