Why we say yes to drugs

Ryan Grim would understand this disconnect perfectly. One of the theses of his new book, "This is Your Country on Drugs: The Secret History of Getting High in America" -- a cornucopia of unconventional wisdom about our relationship to mind-altering substances -- is that the popularity of drugs waxes and wanes according to a complex sum of factors. One of those factors is the "perceived risk" of using a particular chemical, which also fluctuates. There's a tendency to idealize new drugs, as the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal did with a recently isolated narcotic in 1900. "There's no danger of acquiring a habit," it assured its readers about the drug that had just emerged from the labs of the aspirin manufacturer, Bayer. They named it heroin.

What its about is my human right to do whatever I want to with my body....i wish these people who are against drugs that hurt people would read an article or two about how fda approved drugs kill a quarter of a milllion people a year for profit and nobody says shit about it. I could be described drugs for my depression but marijuana works for me. Nobody has any right to keep me away from a substance that makes me feel better. Prohibition has not worked yet and it never will. Our rights are just as important as yours....

Fascinating article. I'm in my mid-30's and have relatively limited drug experience (just pot, shrooms, and alcohol, as best as I can remember). I enjoy/enjoyed all 3, which I usually use/used in social situations. The research nailed me and my people over the years.
The article mentions how young people get high on prescription drugs. I'm absolutely blown away by the knowledge young people I work with have of pharmaceuticals. I don't even know how to properly pronounce the active ingredient in Tylenol! They'll be spitting out the name of this drug and that drug without missing a beat.
When I was coming up, it was the senior citizens that spoke of pharmaceuticals with the fluency of a second language. Now the youth do as well.

I try to keep objective in these type of threads, because law is no place for bias or "past experiences." I observe from what humanity has done as a whole, and I draw conclusions.
I know there is a vast black market of drugs. I know distribution of these drugs are the livelihood of gangs and other destructive groups.
So I can gather:
1) Criminalizing drugs does not eliminate the option of getting them.
2) Criminalized drugs have perpetuated violent group behavior via an underground economy.Hmmm....

Vansun,
Actually the funniest thing about this thread to me is that I thought my statement about the harmful effects of illegal drugs was utterly uncontroversial when I typed it. I had NO idea that I would get that kind of reaction. So my anger is really only about how incredibly rude people were with respect to a remark that I made innocently thinking that practically everybody already KNEW such drugs were harmful.
Back in my own party animal days, nobody in my crowd would ever have asserted that drugs were GOOD for you. We were all about "Ride hard, die young and leave a beautiful corpse." If someone had told us drugs were good for us we would have thought that person utterly deluded.
I don't hate anybody because of their drug use...I don't consider it to be my problem. I just can't stand people who are rude and obnoxious -- though I reserve the right to respond in kind. I assume there are a few nasty posts about me on this thread. I didn't read any of them after the first two twits responded.
But yours slipped by my screen, so I thought I would express my thanks. I have posted something on the order of 2,000 comments here on Current, and you are judging me on two or three on one thread. That says more about you than it does about me. Respond if you like -- I won't read it anyway...no time for people of your limited intellectual scope.

I hate drugs but think they should legalize it I talked to some people who do drugs and they said that if the legalized drugs they would stop because it wouldnt be "cool" anymore and then there would be less violence cause drug dealers and gangs wouldnt be the only ones with some

there are drugs that can ruin lives and relationships. but the good drugs just make life a little more enjoyable. marijuana and mushrooms are very different then meth and heroin. i hope that people come to think that and decriminalize the natural drugs

Funnicus and Tommy,
Yeah, your posts make pretty clear that you take a lot of drugs. I don't know (or care) what they have done to your bodies, but they have clearly killed your manners, judgment and common sense. Objective people reading these posts will see me simply expressing MY opinion, and you guys frothing at the mouth as if I just hit on your sister or something. If drugs are so great, why do you feel so strongly that you have to stomp on someone just becuase they have a contrary view?
One of you called me a liar. To be a liar, I would have to know that one or more of my statements is untrue. I DON'T know that. I know a lot of healthcare professionals, and none of them is in the habit of even USING words as rude and coarse as "liar." But even if one disagrees with my opinion, so what? He is one well-educated person, and I am another. I have mountains of evidence to back up my assertions.
I doubt very much that either of you is unaware of the hundreds of millions of people who attend AA, Alanon, Narcanon and similar meetings all over the world all day every day. Most of these people's lives have been shattered by addiction(s), diseases and other physical and mental health issues. One of the most striking things you first notice about them is how many of them have effectively "lost" former spouses and their children who no longer want anything to do with them -- regardless of whether they have "quit for good this time). They have heard it all before, and any trust there may once have been is long gone.
People are killed in drunken car accidents every single day, children are abused and neglected by drunk or addicted parents, careers are ruined, relationships terminated.
Whichever one of you justifies your drug use because you don't like the government is hilarious. "I am going to do drugs until the government treats me right!" Pfft. Can't even keep a straight face. Yeah, I am sure "the government" can hardly get to sleep at night worrying about your drug use and what policies they can change to rescue you from yourself. But what does any of that have to do with me? You call me a hypocrite. I am not the government. A hypocrite is someone who criticizes the behavior of someone else while engaging in the very behavior he criticizes. I don't do drugs or drink alcohol. Why do you care one way or the other? If you were standing in front of me and someone set you on fire, I would not dirty myself to even piss on you to put you out -- nor would I expect any different from you.
Ultram is not illegal. It is a prescription pain killer. Why would anyone care how it makes your food taste?
Finally, I am not trying to stop you from doing anything, and you know that perfectly well. That is coming from your paranoid, drugged out "minds." As to goody two shoes...thank you. I have no problem being on the side of good, especially since you two are clearly on the side of evil.
But thank you for being the poster children for the positive aspects of serious long-term drug abuse. Your behavior is more damning than 100 of my posts would be.

Its a civil liberties issue for me primarily. Even if something killed you after driving you swiftly insane its still a personal choice. Let me be clear "not on my road", but we should do a better job of keeping all sorts away from dangerous equipment. Do "it" in a club, your home, ranch, fallout shelter/bunker,...not at work, on the road etc.

Look at the Beatles and their music as it got better as they tried new drugs. It didn't kill nor sicken them, so indeed you are a liar.

Do not judge others because you feel you know them from one comment. First off you know nothing about me, secondly one does not have to be strung out on drugs to find distaste in hypocrisy or loath a government that is so far off the reservation it is sickening.
people need to make their own choices if you get into any drug, legal or otherwise you better damn well understand what it is you are putting into your body and the possible results. From addiction to what ever the hell else it may do to you. there are legal drugs that are far more damaging then something that grows in the ground is.
What I do, I do responsibly in a group setting with one person along for the trip totally sober. So maybe just maybe, can think before you ramble on about shit you know nothing about. Hell if the government totally followed the constitution I would still take a hit every so often, I do it because every once in a while it is nice to change perspectives and see things differently than normal.
Go try it some time, you might just find that things make a whole lot more sense after.

here is an idea, when we have honest politicians, who are not getting hand jobs in air ports, sleeping with staff members, sending emails to under age children, having little clubs to make themselves feel better with this idea that the rules do not apply to them, a monetary system owned by the government, a government that cares about the people, a non imperialistic view of foreign policies, that respects a persons right to choose what they do to themselves and keeps the hell out of my personal life, applies taxes to capital gains not personal income, follows the constitution that the nation was founded upon.
maybe just maybe then i will give up my mushrooms... until then leave me the hell alone and stop pushing your hypocritical bullshit to stop my fun, i am not the one cheating on my wife, taking bribes and lying to people for my own gains.

Grinning,
I was just about to typ "alcohol is the worst drug of the bunch," but I realized that I don't have the experience b certain of that. I DO know that it AMONG the worst and that it has probably caused more pain than all the rest combined.
I don't doubt that you enjoy smoking Delia. I did, too in my mid to late teens. But the cumulative effect is not good for your mind, your body, or your relationships...so I have to stand by my post. I hope you are the exception to the rule, because you are such a bright and exuberant youg lady...and we never seem to have enough of those...

I think mind altering substances, lsd in particular, changes a person forever, for better or for worse. it gives a person a chance to see something from an entirely different perspective from which they otherwise would never of experienced. i think it is a coping mechanism that is very important because many people cannot seem to change there "normal" thought patterns unless something life changing occurs. lsd provides a non-toxic answer

I dunno-pretty sure that toking up some marijuana every once in a while won't destroy my life and provides a wonderful diversion on a weekend night.
Also, do you include alcohol? 'Cause it definitely alters your mind.
I basically agree that drugs are bad, but blanket statements are not all they're cracked up to be.

Yes, Big Pharma started marketing a pain reliever some few years ago called Ultram. They dubbed it "The Non-Narcotic Narcotic" because it offered all the relief with none of the addictive qualities. Tell that to the tens of thousands of patients who have since gone through Rehab...just very, very sad.
If you have never taken mind-altering substances (with the exception of mental health related medications properly prescribed to you), one of the greatests gifts you can give yourself is to never start taking them. If you ARE taking them, the precious gift of life is dribbling through your fingers, and you can never get back what has already been lost. Quit while there is still sand in the top of the hourglass -- your reward will be a quiet joy unlike anything else you might exprience. Drugs are NOT cool -- they are a crutch and a corruption that sickens and kills anything they touch, including relationships...

You are clueless, ultram is crap, nobody likes it, it makes your food taste like chemotherapy waste. And you say 10 K people got addicted to it? That's great news for any dope dealer. Keep it illegal so they can make more money, buy more guns and kill more pigs. Sounds like a nice plan to me. Presently I pay no tax on my drugs, I will be glad to keep it that way.

"Drugs are NOT cool -- they are a crutch and a corruption that sickens and kills anything they touch, including relationships..."
That is simply untrue. I have used most drugs, and they didn't kill me. They didn't render me a liar such as yourself who is "sober". I spoke with a neurosurgeon, and asked if there was any way they could measure or determine the death of brain cells (when my mother had a stroke) he said there wasn't. I asked then how did they tell us that marijuana kills brain cells, he said, "they lied, they did not know that"
So cztheday, if you want any respect or trust, maybe start by telling some truth, instead of parrotting what lies they have been pounding in that everybody's heard.....and nobody believes, except sheepies like you. You wear them two goody shoes well.

It is something to bound with my friends over, something to help me unwind after a hard day. and theres nothing wrong the occasional acid drop. It helps my mind expand to see the possibilites of the world. good drugs help you see the world better and bound with your friends. so I find it wrong to blindly say all drugs are bad.
