What kind of lessons can we learn here? During the Bush era, when abstinence education received increased funding, reports of teen pregnancy and STDs "rose sharply," according to a new report from the CDC. Birth rates had been in decline since 1991, but that trend has reversed in more than half the states since 2005, according to the Guardian. The report also finds that syphilis has increased by 50 percent among adolescent girls and that gonorrhea and AIDS among teens are on the rise as well. Abstinence education advocates say the problem is not the failure of their curriculum, but that they need more money to promote their "no sex before marriage" message.

    • Safe Sex Education shouldn't be taught just because "kids will do whatever they want regardless". it should be taught because even as adults, I'm sure more than half of us couldn't properly discuss STI's (no longer STD's, folks. It's an infection, not a disease) or any other facts that are flying around these days. Young adults need to learn that condoms, pills, etc. are positive aspects for a healthy sex life, and they need to learn how to protect themselves emotionally and physically.

When I was 12 my mother explained sex, and that if i were to have sex I needed to tell her so that I can buy condoms and get on birth control. It worked. eleven years later I'm still not a statistic.

Abstinence Education is a joke... and we all know it.

    • Went to a family reunion this week-end there were three babies under the age of three months old! (All to married couples) But damn that's crazy: one was a couple weeks old, one two months old and one will be three months this week!

    • No sex before marriage is stupid... Promote safe sex.... If I have kids at 13 I will tell them if you want to have sex tell me I will buy you condoms... Fuck kids are going to do whatever anyway so don't hate/punish them when you find out they are doing the same as you at that age... Deuces...

    • Why attack Bush he gave millions in Iraq and Afghanistan a chance at freedom and he saved millions in africa with his AIDS programs. He created the largest state park in the world by protecting the barrior reef near Hawaii. When all is said and done Bush did great things Obama will have given our lives and liberties over to the goverment.

He may have done that stuff, and you feel it was good, but this story is about how his administration helped reduce the sexual intelligence of teens who now get pregnant and have std's.

why don't you respond to that part of the story?

also, the 'freedom' is open to interpretation, no? i don't consider being car bombed while ordering your breakfast muffin indicative of freedom.
