Taser-hit man burst into flames

Image
ras_menelik
A man in Western Australia was engulfed in flames when police officers fired a Taser stun gun at him.

Police say they used the Taser on Ronald Mitchell, 36, when he ran at them carrying a container of petrol and a cigarette lighter.

They said that Mr Mitchell, who lives in a remote Aboriginal community, had been sniffing petrol. They suggested the cigarette lighter started the fire.

Mr Mitchell is in a critical condition in hospital with third degree burns.

    • I thought the fuzz was supposed to shoot people in the leg, not in their face where they have a beard rolled in gasoline. If they had shot him in the kneecap that would've knocked out the entire leg nerve instantly and he would've stopped running. Like an instant funny bone.

    • I can see how an electrical charge could ignite on a man doused in flammable fuel. This isn't the only case of a petrol-soaked criminal going flambé, which leads me to believe these perps do it on purpose. Maybe they hope the taser will set off a reaction to get them sympathy from a judge. Then again, that could be giving them too much credit for actually formulating a plan. Morons.

While I agree that there should be an alternative method to zapping someone who smells like gasoline, I don't really know what that alternative would be. Shoot beanbags at them? Any method to subdue is going to pose some sort of risk, but the least life-threatening option possible should be considered, whatever that may be.

    • Ronald: DON'T TASE ME BRO
Officer: I'M NOT YOUR BRO, FRIEND

All a simple miscalculation in relationship status.
Damn Will Wright! Damn you! Why did you release buggy code?! THE HORROR

    • All these people should be at home watching Bonanza and none a this stuff would happen to them. Bong out everybody and.... use less crude oil. Everybody don't drive anywhere on the weekends. Stop popping popcorn. Put down the lethal cigarette lighters too.

      And stop wearing blue clothes.

    • It's weird how some people seem to believe that the police should be expected to put their lives on the line in order to protect the life of somebody who is trying to kill them.

    • I hope the guy feels better, but the cops must have scared to death. I mean if I see a man running to me with gasoline in one hand and a cigarette lighter in his other hand, even though he sees that I am from the police, man, I am going to defend myself. Period.

    • If you spray a perp with pepper or mace, and then taze them, there's a 50% chance they'll catch fire....straight from the mouth of a Cincinnati cop

The guy not wearing blue was the bad guy while the guys wearing blue were the good guys. Unlike a fair duel though it seems that in AUSTRALIA each side chooses their own weapons and go at it. The loser gets set on fire.

It might be a new fad. We haven't seen a good fad in a long time.

The police cased the fire... here is the sequence of events in the article..."He must have put petrol on his face, then the policeman shot him with the Taser, that's when the flames happened," .

What ever happen to police warning to stop or they will shoot?

Yeah, damn cops. The nerve of them!!

And what ever happened to gasoline & cigarette wielding men warning police that they will cover them with gasoline and set them ablaze?

    • why are so many of the posts to this blaming the police...they tried to use a non-lethal way of subduing a man who was high on petrol...the fact that petrol was all over his face and he had a lighter in his hand makes this the perps fault and his alone...i do hope he has a quick recovery and learns that
      sniffing petrol
      + lighter
      + and a taser
= 3rd degree burns for losers

    • It's possible the lighter was a Zippo, and was already lit with the intention of throwing the gas. Once hit with the taser, gas would have gone everywhere, thus hitting the open flame and igniting.

A taser that fires electrodes (vs one you have to press against the victim) would not emit sparks, as the electrodes would be too far from one another. Electricity, by itself, cannot start a fire. It must cause a spark.

The thing about this incident is, there are not enough details coming forward from the witnesses to really know why the fire started.

    • a deadly weapon masquerading as an alternate form to subdue citizens.
Subduing citizens does not give the right for police to accidently kill so many citizens

    • Not to be rude, but that is fucking hilarious! I feel really bad for the dude, but thats what you get for sniffing petrol. You get tazed and lit on fire. He must have been really crazy to sniff that shit though. Who does that?

    • Oops, I guess they never got the training that petrol is flammable and tazer's emit sparks .. who knew?..dumb shit .. but if you come at me with a orange juice can of fuel and a lighter in the other hand you might not have time for a less convenient bullet.

    • So they think the guy started himself on fire while getting zapped huh? People cannot even control their legs well enough to stand up while getting tazed. How did this guy have the motor skills to use a lighter? HHmmm? Sounds like the cops trying to pass the buck on this one.

No actually if you click on the link and read the story he had gas on his face and when the police tasered him it ignited the fire.-It drives me crazy when you guys don't read the story just the excerpt. Thank you thank you very much!

I did read the article. I understand that he was carrying gas and had some on his face. I also understand that he was carrying a lighter. I was just trying to understand how this guy could light himself on fire while being tazed which is what the police said was "a very strong possibility". to be honest I think you are the one that needs to read the story. And....Uh..... You are welcome very much ;-)
