Saudi Arabia made headlines recently when two young Saudi women, Reem, 21, and Nouf, 19 were murdered by their brother who was attempting to restore his family’s honor. What had the women done to dishonor their family? They had spoken to men in public.
Saudi Arabian law prohibits men and women from mingling in public. (A few other Saudi laws include: amputating the limbs of robbers, flogging those who are drunk, and prohibiting women from driving.)
The Saudi Arabian religious police enforce the law that proscribes men and women from ‘mixing’ in public, and a women’s rights group is blaming the police for this murder: had the women not been arrested, the brother wouldn’t have been compelled to slay his sisters, who he thought were shaming his family. Reem and Nouf’s father was present during the murder, and he approved his son’s actions.

    • When the Pharisees brought the woman caught in adultery to JESUS, He said, " Let him who is without sin cast the first stone." They all went away in shame and then JESUS said, 'Neither do I condemn you go and sin no more." I like JESUS way better!!!!!!!!!

    • Hey, honor people.
Have you heard about the Shafi "family"
They all moved to Canada and after two years, the father and son were arrested for killing their three daughters because they disapproved of their Western ways. Ain't they nice and religious?
Sweet and honorable people, who wanted to help their three daughters.
Now, those daughters are all safe from Western influence. Too bad they were not safe from being murdered by their own parents.
I wonder which religion allows that....

    • CalParr: you don't think honor killing is a hate crime. was the men they were talking to punished? They knew the law just like the girls did. Its their belief that woman are second class citizens just like Palin spewing hate during the election against Obama. was it cause he has a arab name and father, the color of his skin? Did you see the face of some of the people in the crowd as she spoke, had they had guns on them and the chance I believe they would of attempt to right what they consider a crime. Love the sinner hate the sin.

WHAT!? you just laid seven non-sense opinions upon me I never expressed.
I think he should be prosectued, both the Canadians and the Saudis. Both Father & Son and Father & Mother. I believe this should be charged as a conspiracy.
I hate Sarah Palin, and am generally disappointed with Obama lack-luster actions but hold no hate towards him, especially for simple things like skin color.
      BUT THIS IS NOT POLITICAL.
My point is if someone loves another, they would not kill them, regardless of law or custom.

P.S. you started a sentence with "did you" and didnt end it in a question mark. Was it a question or an acusation?
Also, Hate Crime is term created by the American Justice system.

    • If you are outrage then demand the government do something today to ease our dependence on Middle East Oil. Lets give back to Iraqi what Cheney stole and if we drill in Alaska sell the the other 49 states and not overseas. Cut down on your driving, take the bus, train ride a bike or walk. Do something if your outraged. Money talks bullshit walks

    • "Thou (you) shalt (should) not murder". A literal translation of the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill". Big difference. Killing to protect your body or the bodies of others, in most Religions is allowed. To plot, scheme, and ambush another body for the purpose of ending its life is murder, done for Religious reasons or other reasons. Hypocrisy is when its done by someone who has ever done something similar to the "crime" they are murdering for, in secret. Talking to Western women when on a business trip for instance, which I have experienced with several visiting Saudi men...But, as Heidi Fleiss said, "We're all flawed beings".

    • Okay TajM, I hear you. Please try to understand, that i personally do not think that a family owns its members like property. The parents own things not people. Yes, we all say, my son or my daughter, but we will not murder them because we hate what they did or do.
When I buy a washing machine, I own it, when I have a child, god "owns" that child and I am a partner but i will not kill it, because who the hell am i to decide life and death? I do not make decisions for god. I do not decide to kill someone because I disapprove of a choice they made.
In my opinion, God, the real and only God, knows exactly what He is doing.
If someone's child marries a "wrong choice," it will work out that they will stop each other, or something will eventually come up, to force them to reconsider what they did.
The people who get killed from "honor" killings also have families or other family members whose hearts are torn out by those murders. Essentially, they who are devastated by the killing, are indirectly also murdered. Consideration for others is paramount in a selfish world.

By the way, I feel that every woman everywhere should own a gun, Moslem or not, every woman!

    • The reality of 'honor killing' is present in every race, culture, and religion. Perhaps under different titles, but the central idea behind it remains the same. It's the objectification of women (that is an international dilemma), and the mindset that women are the source of a family's 'honor'.

There are countless cases that occur in western countries, such as Britain... perhaps also accounting for difficulties that generations of immigrants have. As an intern in a woman's right organization, I've researched countless accounts that show how honor killing is often just a label in order to take care of other grievances such as wealth and land. The fact that honor killing is often justified allows this.

I am a Muslim woman, and proud of the cultural bases that have made me who I am. Every family's take on religion reflects their own background and social experiences. There are dark sides to everyone's religion and culture that are not a accurate reflections of it as a whole. (I know many Saudi girls who have very happy lives, are very well educated, and have very loving families, don't make assumptions.)

    • I am in favor of any Muslim who leads a decent life of peace and love for Mankind, not just for Islam. I appreciate Muslims who do not want to kill and who do not applaud and cheer murder. I love any Muslim who does not hate Christians and Jews. I want to meet them and find those who are totally aginst "honor" killing, which really means "horoor" killing. What kind of an honor is it to murder someone???!!!
They embarrass their god by showing him that they know better than he does. and they decided that their god is wrong to have kept that person alive. Then, they fix their god's mistakes.

    • ''I never ridicule anyone's religion''

Well more fool you then. It is absolutely incumbent upon any intelligent and decent human being to ridicule Islam and expose its inherently fascist nature. Anything less is irresponsible and morally bankrupt.

Actually, it is incumbent upon all good people to ridicule all religion: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. They are all silly superstitions and equally vile and repugnant to reason, equally morally bankrupt.

      How is ridicule ever good?
If your arguement was that it is morally obilitory to offer an alternative I would agree.
If you take away someones rotten meal and leave them to starve you have not saved them.

    • I never ridicule anyone's religion, race, gender identity, etc, and I won't do it now, though this story brings me close to tears. My response is utter incomprehension at the lack of LOVE that has to be present in a society where fathers and brothers can kill their daughters and sisters. Of course, fathers and brothers have committed atrocities here in the U.S., but I am certain it was an anomaly and shock to the victims and the surrounding community. These women KNOW it could happen to them. I cannot even imagine my father slapping me, but these women know, without a doubt, that there are simple mistakes that they could make that could cause their fathers or brothers to take their lives. I don't understand how you could ever hug a person good night that has the capacity to take your life, or tell them how your day was. Does the family, within their house when the burquas and hijabs come off, ever sit and talk about their day or laugh? It would be like laughing with your jailer, or me shooting the breeze in a dark alley with a skinhead...kinda hard to let your guard down.

    • That's freedom of religion, folks! They're just following God's words on how to treat women.

In fact, Christian Gods (both the Catholic and the Protestant gods) say the same. Don't believe me? Open your bibles, and check Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Those fellows tell us exactly how God wants us to treat women...

      Thank God I'm not religious...

you are right. that is why I always mention Jesus was a Jew, lived as a Jew, kept to the laws and died as a Jew. If we want to follow in his footsteps then we must obey the Old Testament. Christianity is nothing more than a chance to avoid the laws in the OT and pagan lifestyles.

    • Killing to protect family honor seems like a misstatement, as killing a family member for such an action as "mingling in public" should only bring more shame to the family for being such stupid schmucks!

    • I'm torn about the death penalty deal in the U.S., but this is totally different...we will kill them for hainus crimes (usually murder)...

We're talking about murder for mingling!!?? The F'd up part is that this is done by family members...

But, just like China, the US will and does look away at their shit in exchange for their resources..what a world..

    • Saudi Arabia is as backwards as they come when it comes to human rights, especially women.
The only difference between them and other suppressive tribes in the region is money...they have the money to buy the power to keep the media from reporting what they're really like. (of course that doesn't mean the media would ever report the real news)
Perhaps they wouldn't have that money or power if the rest of the world weren't buying their oil.
As to a statement above by the ultimateend, about the death penalty....the United States is the last industrial nation to have it and I really wish it were abolished altogether.
