End of an era? California cracks down on nude beaches

Image

Oh, the faded awesomeness of 1979, the year that Mother Jones ran a 12-page feature on America's "psychic renaissance," that string bikinis were in style, and that the California Parks and Recreation Department relaxed its policy on public nudity. It's the 30th anniversary of 1979 this year--a year that this writer turned three--and California has a message for you folks who are still livin' it: Hippie, put your clothes on.

Yesterday, a state appeals court ruled that California parks officials can prohibit nudity on any state beach. The state's laissez faire nudity policy had been challenged last year when Parks Director Ruth Coleman imposed a booty ban at Southern California's popular Onofre beach. Now of course, Onofre bathers will be using a little less suntan lotion.

Is the nudity fight a last gasp of California's hippie heyday? Public perceptions of naked bathers probably haven't changed much since the late '70s, but Gen Xers with kids might not be keen to share the beach with a bunch of proudly shriveled senior citizens. Still, the ruling doesn't apply to land owned by the National Park Service, which has preserved the freedom to bare it all. As the poet Emma Lazarous might say: Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses of hairy naked dudes, yearning to breathe free. . .

    • Man...what is up with this. Now I can't go to the beach and get a legit all over body tan..I'll have to start fake-baking?? What....this must involve tanning salons who will be reaping the benefits to have people fake-bake in their salon because 'sniffle' we have to start wearing bikini bottoms and tops. So no longer will people have a natural all over tan..but will have to go to the tanning salon for a fake bake sesh or fuck around with white asses...haha. Oi fucking vei. :/

    • adam and eve ate the fruit of knowledge and realized they were naked. there was no one around so why were they shamed? think about it, this is an important story, it speaks to one of our great fears. ask yourself, what is it about nudity that causes discomfort ? this does not have to do with sexual interest or inadequacy.
when you see anothers plumbing it reminds you that we are animals, like any dog. most people feel vulnerable when on the toilet and lock the door even when alone.
accepting our dual nature is an important step in self actualization. back in eden did god mind if adam and eve were naked? no, god threw them out when they put on clothes. that might be the lesson of the crusificion; jesus was nailed arms spread, naked for everyone to see his hairy genitals, leaving this world as he came...... bare ass naked!

    • I have problems with public nudity for sanitary reasons. I don't want to sit my naked bottom on a chair or bench that a diseased, dirty or incontinent person sat on, do you?
Besides I think some bodies just should be covered up, Bare is beautiful in young, in shape people; not obese rolly polly wrinkled or stretched out weight loss people. It puts people off food for awhile. My daughter was grossed out by a fat old man with tshirt tan lines riding his lawnmower without a shirt. She was around 5 or 6. The whole site made her have flash backs, the rolls and the man boobs just bouncin' around on the white trunked guy just blew her little mind. She still shutters when she sees a similar situation.

    • What amazes me is the same people that run to these tea-bag parties screaming about their freedoms being infringed upon are the very same people that want to dictate who people can marry and where they can take their clothes off and with whom - and which god to prey to while you're not doing all the things they don't see fit. How does that work, is there only supposed to be freedom for some?

Tax them? Are you kidding me? That is almost worse than banning them.

I love Black's beach and a few other nude beaches because its a place where clothes are unneccessary, the body is desexualized and liberated, and materialism is destroyed.

By taxing it, you are turning it into a piece of tourism, a place for people to come and look at naked people, or a place to get soft porn for a lower cst. That's disgusting.

I agree that banning these parks is tragic and I protest it. But good Lord, do not keep them and tax them or we are all in for a lot of trouble.

    • Naked hippies might be one of the most offensive sights out there, but it shouldn’t be illegal. People can enter nude beaches at their own risk.

    • well erm yeah a good thing for the aesthetic reason in the U.S. .... However you gotta come to corsica in the summer and the beauties there are gorgeous, actually its a festival and its usually a model going nude out of boredom, but man that needs to happen here.

    • Just a Info heads up...The property in is owned by US Marines, The state of California Leases the property from the Marines....There is a $10 Fee to get into the Park and the Area is the very last trail and is not easy for the average beach goer to find or hike to
...it seems to me, a state that wants to close down its parks means that $10 bucks is not coming in and if the state is worried about this section of the park..how do they have money to inforce such peaceful people? . its OC...they are the minority..Most people not from Orange County only go to Disneyland the beaches and get out quick..
The Christian "right" is all judging and think they have all the "answers"!

    • Seriously everyone!! This topic went from a few comments when I went to sleep, to 32 when I woke up. Let's pick our battles....I can NOT believe how many people are in an uproar over this. Give me a fucking break...YOu have a right to be naked..and I have a right to go to the beach and NOT see your ass naked. Now, go find something socially important to get upset about.

    • Great so now they will be able to tell men that they have to wear shirts on the beach too or face a fine?

Where will their unchecked power end? Let me guess they're going to start placing police on the beaches whilst pulling them away from REAL crimes like rape and murders, they could be solving.

This is just a ploy for the state to bring in money from fines. I mean shit all I ever hear about on the news anymore is how bankrupt the state of California is.

"the ruling doesn't apply to land owned by the National Park Service, which has preserved the freedom to bare it all."

Good! I'll take my business elsewhere. Grow up California, and accept the body gave you.

    • The people who are responsible for this are actually a few nudists. The problem was on a single beach where for 30 years the beach goers were reasonably discreet. Recently for som reason a few of them instead started leaving their area and parading around naked in parts of the beach occupied by non nudists.

No one had a problem till this started. it is an over reaction though. Any legislation should apply to that beach only.

    • Whoever is responsible for that should be sent back to preschool. It insults us all when childish imbeciles set policies like this. The whole state should feel embarrassed.

    • Nudity today continues to carry over this aura of free wheeling sex. Some people just prefer to be naked. This is just another example of what happens when we complain. We lose another freedom. What a loss!! It's senseless!

    • They should legalize it and charge admittance. We need new revenue sources and that would certainly generate some funds.

    • California is a land of such paradoxes. Public nudity should be celebrated. We need to learn to accept nudity as common and stop the antiquated Victorian principles that keep trying to drag us back to Medieval times.

Although I wouldn't personally run around naked everywhere, I applaud the right of people to live as they came into the world; nude.

Agreed, Ive got no problems with nudity even on an old wrinkled hippie.

I lived in Santa Cruz for a while and there are tons of nude beaches there and yeah I often saw lots of old men and their bits but who cares? Id go with my girlfriends and we'd lay out and have a good time...it was nice because no one acted all perverted and stared at us or anything. At nude beaches everyone just pretty much does their own thing and doesnt do anything sexual or inappropriate. I dont see why the human body is considered to be so offensive.

I think what happens is someone gets all in a bunch about it and starts complaining. It's an "easy target" for politicians. That way they get to say they "cleaned up" something. If they don't then their opponent at the next election will pull some sort of "immoral" claim and run it in a commercial.

In the end, it's cheap voter pandering.

If 'GenExers' dont want their little ones seeing nudity then dont go to a nude beach! Don't spoil it for the rest of us! Besides, most of the nude beaches arent best beaches so its not like prime beach real-estate is being used up :/
