To all the birthers: No, Obama's grandmother didn't say he was born in Kenya

Among those on television who've been covering the sudden public resurgence of the Birther movement -- but in a much more responsible way than Lou Dobbs -- is MSNBC's Chris Matthews. The other day, he beat up pretty badly on Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., who's a co-sponsor of the "Birther bill" that would require future presidential candidates to provide proof of their natural-born citizenship. Thursday, he hosted Watergate burglar turned radio host G. Gordon Liddy, who's fallen under the Birthers' sway.

Liddy himself looked decidedly unwell, and sounded out of sorts -- even Matthews seemed to realize that making him into a piñata would be unsporting. I'm not going to do it either, but you can watch the video below.

I'm posting on the appearance, though, because of something Liddy said during it: "You've got a deposition, which is a sworn statement, from the step-grandmother, who says, 'I was present and saw him born in Mombasa, Kenya.'"

Liddy got this particular myth a little garbled, but it's a favorite of the Birthers'. I've covered it before, but it's worth posting on now, I think, because cable news is just getting back to this story (there was some coverage late last year, when the Supreme Court declined to hear one of the Birther lawsuits) and hosts like Matthews don't know all the crazy twists of the conspiracy theory well enough to knock them down.

What Liddy was referring to is actually an affidavit filed by a street preacher named Ron McRae, who conducted an interview with Sarah Obama, the second wife of President Obama's grandfather, through a translator. (Sarah Obama is not the president's biological grandmother, but he calls her "Granny Sarah.")

In that interview, Sarah Obama does in fact say at one point that she was there for her grandson's birth. But that was a mistake, a confusion in translation. As soon as a jubilant McRae began to press her for further details about her grandson being born in Kenya, the family realized the mistake and corrected him. And corrected him. And corrected him. (The audio is available for download here.)

No matter, though, because people who believe in a conspiracy theory simply hear what they want to hear. So some Birther sites have posted transcripts and YouTube clips that end abruptly with the mistranslation and don't include the corrections. McRae, for his part, included the full translation in his affidavit -- he thinks it's all just part of the conspiracy. "Some few younger relatives, including [translator Vitalis Akech Ogombe]," McRae wrote in his court filing, "have obviously been versed to counter such facts with the common purported information from the American news media that Obama was born in Hawaii."

Here's the conversation:

MCRAE: Could I ask her about his actual birthplace? I would like to see his birthplace when I come to Kenya in December. Was she present when he was born in Kenya?

OGOMBE: Yes. She says, yes, she was, she was present when Obama was born.

MCRAE: When I come in December. I would like to come by the place, the hospital, where he was born. Could you tell me where he was born? Was he born in Mombasa?

OGOMBE: No, Obama was not born in Mombasa. He was born in America.

MCRAE: Whereabouts was he born? I thought he was born in Kenya.

OGOMBE: No, he was born in America, not in Mombasa.

MCRAE: Do you know where he was born? I thought he was born in Kenya. I was going to go by and see where he was born.

OGOMBE: Hawaii. Hawaii. Sir, she says he was born in Hawaii. In the state of Hawaii, where his father was also learning, there. The state of Hawaii.

    • Bad news, Obama lemmings. One need not be a "Natural Born Citizen" of the Unites States to obtain a "certification of live birth" from Hawaii. I went to the Hawaiian government website & personally verified this. I encourage you sheople to do the same.

    • Probably a little closer to nationalism than racism.

I don't have a problem with Obama being president, I am opposed to his power grab which is just picking up where Bush left off.

    • I can't believe how lame this birther nonsense is. Rush and Hannity need to stop pandering to these wingnuts. It's been proven, the certificate is authentic, and there are witnesses. The records are available to the public, but instead of verifying their claims, birthers just propagate the rumors and call it truth. The worst kind of conspiracy theorists are the ones that don't do any research to back up their position. Conspiracies happen, but this one has no merit whatsoever.

    • I don't really care where Obama was born, and obviously it is a big deal because it is unconstitutional for America to have a president who is not an American citizen.

It's such a red herring as there are plenty of other outrageous things about Obama, such as his appointment of a dual ctizen Israeli, and all of the Goldman Sachs appointees, the covering up for BushCo ect.

But I do find it amusing that this is an such a big issue for some.

And a Ghanan online newspaper, modernghana.com, DID IN FACT claim that Obama was returning to the continent of his birth lol and then they went back and changed the paragraph to "the continent of his father's birth" lol

Regarding "A duel citizen of Israel", according to Israeli law, aren't all Jews are dual citizens of Israel and can seek asylum there. I hope you aren't arguing to not appoint Jews to government positions. And unfortunately, all the presidents were closely tied to the financial titans...Obama is better, but he's still a politician. And with the "continent of his birth" stuff...unfortunately, I've seen "typos" like that written about many African Americans...I guess two centuries here don't count, but for Obama,he's even closer to "the dark continent". Most of the people reporting these days, for better or for worse, are citizen journalists anyway, so discrepancies and downright lies are bound to be published.

The Israeli law of return has nothing to do with US law of having dual citizens in government positions aside from the fact that we are talking about Jews in general.

We would not have a high level cabinet position filled by someone who had gone off and served in the Syrian army, or the Iranian army or even the Mexican army, so why should we have a double standard for dual Israeli citizens.

No I am not opposed to Jews in government but any government official who has served in the Israeli military and who's father was a member of an Israeli terrorist group reposible for assasinations and blowing up buildings should be an automatic red flag for any US government position, let alone the President's chief of staff.

I definitely stand corrected on that dual citizen thing... Ironically, I guess I am further evidence of people talking out of their ass with such righteousness as to sound legit lol.

As to the terrorist group- one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. I'd have to look into his affiliations further before making a judgement.

I don't want to defend anyone, because I obviously need to get more informed, but I am almost certain there are other dual citizens in government that have not come to light. These birthers are delusional. I read somewhere that John McCain, as an army brat, was actually born in Panama.... oooooh scary : ) he could have actually run this country with obvious ties to panamanian warlords...what a joke.

It's ok, I don't fault anyone for not knowing about the history of dual citizens Israelis in our governmnet, I just fault the people who defend them.

You should just do a quick Google seach for the Israeli terrorist group the Irgun, and yes they were freedom fighters who dressed as Arabs and blew up the King David Hotel in 1948.

    • These birthers people, are the cream of the crop of anti-american sore losers the republicans have. Not to mention how insane they have become. I have a theory about these and other sore losers on the right, they were frightened for eight years by a band of criminals in the white house that keep the American public in fear so they could do anything they wanted including stealing us blind. They call these kind of people who have been terrorized for so long victims of Stockholm syndrome. Please get some real mental health soon before you miss out on the greatest presidency of our nations history.
