Gates agrees to have beer with Obama and Policeman.

Professor Henry Louis Gates said Saturday he was willing to have a peace-making beer with Obama and Cambridge, Massachusetts, police Sgt. James Crowley.
Gates was arrested last week at his home after a neighbor called police to say that a man was breaking into the house. Obama said Cambridge police had "acted stupidly," prompting an outcry from police groups and a resulting media blitz.
Obama later telephoned both men and, on Crowley's suggestion, invited the two to the White House for a beer.
"I am pleased that he, too, is eager to use my experience as a teaching moment, and if meeting Sgt. Crowley for a beer with the president will further that end, then I would be happy to oblige," Gates said in a statement on TheRoot.com, an Internet newsletter he edits.
Gates said he hoped his arrest would help reduce racial profiling by law enforcement agencies.

what a great idea, this is how the founding fathers found the compromises that made our republic. ben franklin seduced france to our cause when he was ambassador with the social lubricant.
i am well aware of the effects of alcohol; being sober for a while and working in recovery. nobody knows the real numbers but less then 10% of population can develop a physical addiction to alcohol (emotional addiction, that's something else), so most people can drink with impunity.
this is how difficulties are solved in the real world. crowley is smart to suggest this and this is not at all racist. racist would be asking to have watermelon.

first of all I think that this is a great idea! get together, have a beer, talk things out.. who hasn't done that before? I would RATHER go have a beer or a bowl with Obama than go to some stupid fancy schmancy dinner where you get little to no face time with the President, how's that going to solve anything? And it is really none of our business, they get to work things out the way they see fit...

I think this is a great idea, it's pretty pathetic than anyone out there considers this demeaning.
Can't see that you're a classist and a racist for thinking that the President is beneath having a diplomatic discussion with his citizens over a good brew?
Is there honestly something working class and white about beer?
Your eagerness to be offended and your hyper-defensive nature give you away for the petulant, aggressive brat you really are.
This is honestly unprecedented, Presidents should do shit like this more often.

LOL, let's stay focused, onemalefla. You are meandering into the irrelevant. Your comments about my perspective about your 'blackness' is laughable at best, considering I have made no comments concerning them. Honestly, I could care less. My concern in not your background, but your consistently biased view about this topic. That's it. Any other inference that you are getting is coming from you. I don't attack people. I attack ideas, opinions, philosophies, etc. If you want to attack me personally, that's fine. Ha, it just shows you are not equipped for proper debate.
And I know you have not read anything substantial concerning this topic, or your comprehension of them is way off because your statements Cop says 'Gates came at him right off the bat.' and 'Gates said cop was a racist pig right off the bat.' are simply wrong. Read the police report. Read an interview or two with Gates. The situation is not as simple as you are making. The difference is that I do my research before I speak, so I know what I'm talking about. And as I person is familiarizes with a subject before they speak on, it is quite easy to recognize those who do not. Furthermore to simply eliminate a possible scenario, such as profiling, simply because you don't want to talk about it screams bias. Ha, screaming that I am wrong does not help your premise. Your view is still biased and grasp of the facts is flawed. Instead of bringing up irrelevant points about what you think I am saying about your character, actually read what I am saying and go read from ALL angles of the situation. Ignorance is very treatable, my friend.

Ciggaretts and tobacco kill half a million people a year and the president of this county recomends drinking to solve problems. This Reuters article above implies that Crowley had something to do with deciding to have a beer. Did he? Reuters states that "going to the White House" was Crowley's suggestion. Or did Crowley put Obama on the spot with the suggestion?
Anyway, good idea to have a beer.
But wasn't it Bush who got elected on the premise he'd be the guy you'd most want to have a beer with? Yet Bush's presidency was secretive and the last thing he'd ever do is have a beer with a regular guy.
